SheepNES: Modern Battlefields: MAIN THREAD

I would like to decide the result of the election myself, though if Sheep requires that he do it, then that is fine by me.
OOC: It would make more sense for Sheep to decide. Perhaps, though, the player could influence the vote by 5% either way, generally enough to settle close votes the way the player wants but not enough for unrealistic results to happen?

Sheep has told me that players will decide.

This is not at all unrealistic, Mme Royal and M. Sarkozy are the front runners in the 2007 election.
OOC: How far does a player get to decide? Could, for example, Symphony D. decide that Ralph Nader is elected President in 2008?

It must be reasonable. Any elections that I find not reasonable I will overturn.

All right. Thanks for the clarification. :)

From UK
To the international community.

Overall the war in Afghanistan is going well and we are trying to crush the Taliban. However we need help and co-operation from everyone. Many of us has been struggling threw this difficult times and I now all has been pulling there weight. Canada has been taking the brunt of it in Afghanistan's southern provinces and I commemorate there soldiers and honor everyones fallen. We have to sit down with Pakistan and find a way to control there border to stop the Taliban from going back and forth with no obstacles. The United Kingdom will be dedicating more soldier to Afghanistan and its southern provinces as well the border with Pakistan. We hope that if we lead with example more will follow and help us with this cause. So therefore we ask the international communities for support for this cause.

From Japan

Japan would be interested in expanding its humanitarian forces, drawn from its self defense force, to help support our allies the United States and all our friends in Afghanistan, as part of our expanding role in international politics. We feel that it is within Japan's own national interests to indirectly aid in the fight against elements that support terrorism and illicit drugs, which ultimately come to hurt the Japanese nation.

January 5 2007

On this day we UK(canuck3), China(Jack_www)
, Japan(JosefStalinator) and the UN secretary general (sheep)tried to sit down (msn multi convo) with DPRNK (captain2) and try to get DPRNK to give up there nukes. thought the talks went long no official outcome was determined or finalized. The only conclusion was that the U.S.A. was needed to sit down at the table however he was no wear to be found.

Japan requested that UN inspectors to go into DPRNK to make sure the nukes are acutely gone.

UN secretary general as well wanted UN inspectors to go in

DPRNK will only allow Chinese or SK inspectors

China was trying to get UN + Chinese inspectors to go in.

UK wanted UN inspectors or any country on the UNSC.

When talks broke down in all agreeing that we needed U.S.A. people went to there corners and started talking with there allies. In in the middle of the night DPRNK came to the UK and made an offer. They wanted Peaceful nuclear reactors and sanctions dropped, nuclear reactors for some power and sanctions dropped. They offered the disarming of there nukes and UN inspectors allowed into the country
**no final say has been made yet**

From Turkey
To Israel and Palestine
As one of the very few countries that have good relations with both of you, we offer to act as intermediary in diplomatic relations between your nations, if you see the need for such assistance.
We see no need. We are already engaged in talks with Prime Minister Abbas and will not speak with the terrorists of Hamas. The Knesset greatly appreciates your offer, but we must refuse.

from Turkish Army
to Israel
We are happy with the cooperation between our countries. We will be running some more field trials on the Sabra prototypes you delivered, so far we can say it has proven to be an extremely capable MBT. We might be interested in more Sabra upgrades in the future.
Israel and the IDF would be thrilled to continue scientific cooperation with Turkey and its military forces.

OOC edit - rookie question: was this too specific for the main thread, was it more appropriate for PMing?
PM should only be used when diplo is meant to be secret. The ideal would be to have all diplo done on thread, but given that people no longer (and haven't since the early days of or before most NESers' careers) respect the secrecy of spoilers PMs and IMs have become necessary for secrecy.

OFFICIAL PRESS STATEMENT FROM THE WHITE HOUSE

President Bush has established January 21 as the official date of the unveiling of his plan in Iraq, and has scheduled a press conference for the discussion of new American policy in the region. President Bush has also announced his intention to visit Moscow early this February, as part of talks on a range of issues concerning the United States and Russia with President Putin.

OFFICIAL PRESS STATEMENT FROM UNITED STATES SECRETARY OF STATE CONDOLEEZA RICE

Iran's recent indications that it is willing to "help in the war on terror" in the event that the United States and the United Nations discontinue economic pressure is viewed by this government as nothing but blackmail, and as such, any proposals in a similar vein will be rejected out of hand. The repeated remarks of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to the effect of "the occupying regime [of Israel] must be wiped off the map", the repeated and thinly veiled threats to cut off oil supplies to Western markets as a form of blackmail, repeated insensitive remarks toward Israel and the Jewish people—including but not limited to tantamount denial of the Holocaust—combined with Iran's known sponsorship of terrorist organizations such as Hamas, are all strong indicators as to why Iran must not be allowed to possess nuclear technology.

The United States will not cease its drive to continue economic sanctions against Iran within the United Nations until Iran formally abandons its nuclear ambitions, discontinues its nuclear program, and submits to inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency to ensure its disarmament. Thank you.

TO: Wu Dawei, Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs, PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA
FROM: Christopher Hill, Assistant State Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
DATE: January 9, 2007
SUBJECT: North Korean Nuclear Armaments
CC: South Korea ; Democratic People's Republic of Korea ; Japan ; Russia

The proposed settlement presented by the People's Republic of China, which reads as follows:

1.) PRC will sign a Mutual Defense Treaty with DPRNK. The terms are if DPRNK is a victom [sic] of an unprovoked attack by any nation PRC will come to the defense of the DPRNK.
2.) PRC will station troops in DPRNK
3.) PRC inspectors will insure that all nuclear weapons are removed from DPRNK
4.) PRC will bring a motion before the UN Security Concil [sic] to remove all scantions [sic]against DPRNK.
5.) PRC will increase aid sent to DPRNK

Now rest assured that if DPRNK starts to arm itself with nuclear weapons again, out forces stationed in DPRNK will take the steps needed to make sure that they are disarmed again. Also if DPRNK attacks anther nation, we will aid the United States in stopping such an attack. The defense agreement only applies if DPRNK is attacked by no falt [sic] of their own.

All we ask in return is the following:
1.) Support our UN resolution to withdraw all scantions [sic] against DPRNK once it is verrified [sic] that it has disbanned [sic] it's nuclear weapons program and Chinese troops have moved in.
2.) Help us give more aid to DPRNK

Please let us know as soon as possible.
is completely unacceptable to the government of the United States. The resolution of the North Korean situation will be settled within the context of the Six Party Talks and not by unilateral decision-making process on the part of any smaller combination of states involved in the talks. Furthermore, inspection of North Korean nuclear facilities by any organization other than the International Atomic Energy Agency to ensure compliance and disarmament is likewise unacceptable. We will not agree to these terms.

Sincerely,
Christopher Hill
U.S. Assistant Secretary of State

FROM: John Thomas Schieffer, U.S. Ambassador to Japan, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
DATE: January 9, 2007
SUBJECT: Expansion of Peacekeeping Forces

The continued gradual expansion of involvement of Japan in international affairs is a welcome move by the United States. Japan has consistently proven itself a trusted ally of the United States and as such we are more than happy to endorse and assist it in the creation of a greater international peacekeeping presence. The decision of the Japanese government to engage in the international war on drugs is likewise a move that meets with much approval within the American government. Should the Japanese government wish to engage in further coordination of either of these endeavors it should not hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely,
John Thomas Schieffer

The United States and Republic of Ghana have had a long-standing and profitable relationship and we only expect this to continue over time. The United States stands firmly by Ghana in its endeavors. The President has been informed of the interest of Ghana in expanding trade relations and sends word that he is considering the ratification of a sole-executive agreement in response. We look forward to continued cooperation with one another, and thank you for your interest.

Luxembourg City MP: Free High-Speed Internet Access in Every Household by 2010

LUXEMBOURG CITY: Ben Fayot today proposed in the Chamber of Deputies a bill that would bring government-paid high-speed internet access to every household in Luxembourg. "As a telecommunications leader, it is only right that Luxembourg should be on the forefront on the Digital Revolution," said Fayot, an influential LSAP representative. Fayot has already served a term as president of the LSAP. A strong supporter of the EU, he started his internet banking business, now used by a majority of Luxembourgish banks, using a loan from the European Investment fund as his initial capital. Although promised a ministry if he joined the CSV, Fayot chose to continue as a LSAP member because of his "deep commitment to improving the lives of the workers of Luxembourg".

Asked about how the government would pay for the plan, Fayot dismissed worries about specific details, but noted "unlike larger countries, we don't have to waste our entire budget on weapons" and expressed his desire to fully implement the plan as soon as possible. The legislation is expected to pass easily, with the CSV, LSAP, DP, and Greens all supporting the bill. Only the ADR expressed disapproval. Said Jacques-Yves Henckes, a Luxembourg City representative, "Luxembourg should be focusing on decreasing property taxes and reforming the pension system. In my day, we didn't worry about this newfangled internet thing, and the government certainly wouldn't have paid for it."

A New Era for Luxembourg

EDITORIAL: Today's surprising and welcome announcement by Ben Fayot is but one sign of renewed activity in Luxembourg in recent weeks. Previously dismissed as a backwater by those who bothered to think of it, Luxembourg is returning to the international stage, at least in EU circles. PM Jean-Claude Juncker staked his political career on a referendum on the EU Consitution in 2005, and won the gamble. He appears to have spent most of 2006 strategizing with advisors, and now has unveiled a broad program of legislation in the EU. Called the "Hero of Dublin" for the unlikely agreement he brokered between France and Germany in 1996, Juncker seems to have done it again with the recent Treaty of Luxembourg, which addresses French concerns on accelerated EU expansion and sets forth a framework for continued expansion and re-allocation of votes. According to rumors, Juncker may have drafted some of the language in the treaty himself. In any case, the editors sincerely hope the influence of Luxembourg on the international scene continues to increase.
