Skyrim - The Elder Scrolls V

Based on the complete lack of art of neighbouring provinces in Oblivion, and the distances between the areas, I highly doubt there will be anything more than trees and rocks past the border (which will probably be an invisible wall). Though I'll still probably check it out.

You could get into Skyrim via Serpent's Pass.

It was a pretty closed off wilderness; there were a few rocks, some frozen ponds, and those ruins.

@Double A: Mods cannot, will not fix everything. Plus, don't know about anyone else, but for me there was a... certain line I'd hit pretty fast when all the eff'in around with mods and getting them all to work properly just wouldn't be worth the trouble. And often would even pull me out from the game, as I'd get tired of getting it to work and/or finding just the right ones instead of playing...

@salty mud: Really? Some type of reasoning? How about common sense?
Yes I already see responses being, "it's not that unreasonable to ask for something decent in the distance... etc.", but really... It's Bethesda. I do like Bethesda, but come on. Could you climb and see Skyrim (or morrowind, or anything for that matter) in Cyrodiil? No. Why would you here?
And I'd imagine Bethesda had in mind at least some distance (if only abstract) between the provinces, not simply "hey look at the other side of the fence, there's Cyrodiil" kinda thing. Do have in mind that the provinces get "scaled" in some ways when they get into a game.

I did waaaay too much modding for Oblivion and will totally agree that there is definitely only so much you can do with mods. When something suffers from such poor design decisions in so many directions at once (as oblivion most certainly does), modding things up to speed in every direction is very difficult indeed and just makes horrible messes. Once you get to the point of that ridiculous toppling assemblage that the "must-have" compilation became with all the drama it required just to get it installed (let alone get it to play with other mods), it's all just too much effort for a game that's still pretty damn substandard despite all their effort. And of course there's not much you can do about the terrible main questline and general lack of inspiration.

On the other hand, I felt that Morrowind and the Fallout games really just needed relatively minor number tweaking and balancing mods for personal taste (edit: and the "no cliff racers" mod, of course), which don't really mess with the world and other mods so much...so there was plenty more room to just try out other interesting addons to the world without worrying about compatibility so much.

So yeah I think it's pretty important that it all vaguely works out of the box; I'm relatively hopeful based on what I've seen. Not holding out any hope for the main storyline, of course, but that's a little beside the point for this sort of game anyway, isn't it? Just give me an interesting world that's not too broken - if it's anything like "Bloodmoon, but more of it" I'll be happy. And they seem to have actually hired an animator this time, which is nice!

I'll bet you pocket lint that Skyrim will have DLC (per official pr release). I'd almost bet that it will allow teleporting to other locations like Fallout 3 did.

They've already said Skyrim will have DLC, but it will be more Shivering Isles style as opposed to Horse Armour style. No complaints from me.

I'm not a fan of the "teleport to somewhere" DLC. 4 times out of 5 it feels tacked on and I wonder what the heck my character would want to go there for (only one of the DLCs for Fallout 3 was any good, out of 5, in my opinion, and that's because the area that was tacked on was substantial enough that almost a whole game could be made in it). I find they often clash with the original setting of the game which made that game great.

My favorite type of DLC would be some that add a lot of new enemies, and equipment types, and spells into the already existing world. And by that I mean 10-15$ for a lot of those things (dozens of armors and weapons and enemies and spells), not 2$ for one type of armor, which is ridiculous. As for expanding the world, I'd prefer if they added dungeons or hidden places within the already existing world.

In other news; this week is going to be very long :(

I don't mind travelling to perhaps lesser areas dedicated to something that isn't necessarily linear. From what I've seen, Shivering Islands was a little linear, but not too much in that category.

I agree with Rub' Rum though that more spells would be great, especially as the array of spells in Skyrim seem to be reduced slightly. There weren't exactly a huge variety in the effects of spells of Oblivion though, so I'm hoping for something that dedicates more elements such as water, light/darkness, or earth spells. Would be cool. :)
Oh, and perhaps a good few extra equipments. I wouldn't judge regarding that yet though, as I don't know what we're getting in Skyrim quite yet. (don't spoil it!! D: )

I assume you mean Point Lookout.

And, well... Your character wants to go there because YOU want them to go there... that's the way I see it. My character who I play as is representing me in their world, and they do what I want them to.

I thought Shivering Isles was awesome. Totally new surroundings, new enemies, new weapons, towns, and a fun storyline. (With sidequests to boot.) I didn't find it any more linear than Oblivion, in that there was a main quest you needed to finish, but there was also plenty to do if you didn't feel like doing the main quest. Maybe one of the best DLCs of the Oblvion/Fallout/Fallout NV triumvirate. Most of which have been so-so IMHO.

I'm used to games being unlocked at around 10AM Steam time (so 1PM eastern time for me)... that is when things go according to plans (usually end up with an unlock many hours later for some reason)... However I read Skyrim will unlock at midnight local time in every region in the night from the 10t to the 11th. I hope that's true.

Dang this week is torturing me. The fact that this game isn't released yet is about to give me a seizure.

And that damn convention is preventing me from playing it all the time throughout the weekend. :(
Oh well. At least that is lots of fun as well, but still.

Any word on whether this game has been dumbed down/streamlined because it is a multiplatform game?

Any word on whether this game has been dumbed down/streamlined on the PC in order to satisfy the console version or is the PC version significantly different/better?

You know Thormodr, I tend to agree with many of your points of view on this matter of dumbing down, but I don't know if you realize how many threads you've posted exactly the same sentence almost to the word in, be it about Civ 5, Diablo III, or Elder Scrolls V. It's starting to be a little redundant, and since nobody has played Skyrim yet, your question seems painfully hostile and rhetorical.

We don't know, we'll see, previews of the game are highly positive, but everybody is now stupid and corrupted by having played consoles right.

Well, I'm not a one trick pony or anything here. I post about a wide variety of things.

Plus, I have started exactly one thread on the all the other games forum and I was initially neutral towards Diablo 3. As more information became available, I altered my opinion on the subject.

I also feel that Diablo 3 will be a decent enough game. It's the mountain of crap that they've piled onto it that makes it a no go for me.

I do feel that it is a valid concern in this day and age. Plus, obviously Skyrim hasn't been released yet. (though apparently it has been hacked on the XBox already) Just curious on people's thoughts on the matter.

Sorry, if my post got your hackles up.
