Skyrim - The Elder Scrolls V

I hope that one side isn't clearly defined as bad and one as good.

You know, aside from the dragons.

I'm pretty sure they've left that part up to the player. As you go through the game you will learn more about both sides and you are able to pick which one you prefer. At least, that's how I hope it is.

I also hope that storyline is completely separate from the main quest. It would be nice to have a secondary struggle going on in Skyrim that is separate from the main one.

I must say, the graphics from images I've seen don't look too... thrilling at all. They do the job, but not what "Ultra" on a game should look like. :hmm: I know Bethesda games aren't played for the graphics, but it would have been nice.

Fine by me, Oblivion had a heavy focus on beautiful graphics and look where that got us. Less focus on graphics, more focus on gameplay, storytelling, and worldbuilding please.

Agree 100%. Substitute Oblivion for "random game name" and that would be true 90% of the time as well.

Well I just broke down and ordered it on Steam so it can preload. Don't make me regret it Bethesda.

About half an hour to go... Good I have this assignment which I can spend time on while waiting. :)

So I've been playing a few hours of it....early days but so far I'm pretty impressed, and it's certainly much much better than Oblivion. There actually seems to be some love and care put into the world. For me the world is the most important bit of these games...this is where Oblivion lost me - the sinking feeling when I kept exploring its bland nothingness and thinking "surely this can't be it?" I haven't had any of that yet with Skyrim, though I haven't explored a fraction of the world. It feels like a real place, with locations with some actual inspiration put into them, and I'm excited to explore more of it.

The NPCs all look fine and the voice acting is almost all pretty passable (although there's a few people who sound exactly like Arnie - I'm not saying that's a negative though...). I get the impression that every second NPC has their own sidequest too. I did the first major sidequest dungeon (the Barrow, I think it's the one that was in previews and stuff) and it was great, really cool stuff. The fighting has been fun, if simplistic and perhaps a little easy. Leveling also seems maybe a bit fast, though I like the perks system, and honestly it's nice to develop my character organically without the pressure to choose major and minor skills at the start - would perhaps have been nice if you could choose one or two to give a one-time bump to at the start though.
Nothing egregiously stupid in the main quest yet either, and credit is due that they seem to have actually fleshed out the world's politics again a la Morrowind.
It looks pretty good, though I think the art design has a lot to do with that, and it runs surprisingly well on my computer (good graphics card, old cpu).

On the other hand, the UI is absolutely atrocious, possibly the worst UI I've seen in a modern game. It must take real talent to combine such a lack of information with such a byzantine layout. Seriously needs a modder on this, stat.

Anyway overall I'm feeling very positive about it, UI aside.

If (more likely when) I buy it, it will definitely be the retail hard-copy version.

It uses Steamworks anyway but I want to be able to proudly display the box next to ym Oblivion and Morrowind boxes on my shelf. In the box holding all my other game boxes.

Is anyone having issues with the controls? One friend of mine is loudly complaining about bad, floaty, console port controls she had to jack the sensitivity up for so she could move around in game correctly which makes navigating the menus difficult (since apparently it is the same sensitivity). On the other hand, Kan says they feel like Oblivion's.

Yeah default mouse sensitivity was waaaaaay low. And the control system is very, very console-y - which makes menus a horrible mess, the mouseover for for the dialogue option you want is very temperamental and prone to choosing the wrong thing, going through skills and perks is just awful - a massive exercise in frustration, switching weapons is really tediously awkward (and breaks the rhythm of a fight when you switch from a bow in the heat of combat when an enemy charges), and overall nothing makes sense UI-wise. I don't like being hyperbolic like this, but for mouse and keyboard, the UI is just an unmitigated disaster - far worse than even Oblivion's ever was. Lucky the game itself is good.

How do I fix the crash to desktop?
Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Sound

In the advanced tab on this new window, select 24 bit, 44100Hz (Studio Quality) in the drop down menu

How do I disable the smooth mouse settings?
Go to your Steam Directory -> steamapps -> common -> skyrim -> Skyrim
Create a backup of the SkyrimPrefs.ini file
Open the file, then scroll down to where it says [Controls] and find bMouseAcceleration=1
Change to bMouseAcceleration=0
Save, exit, and play

Go to your Steam Directory -> steamapps -> common -> skyrim -> Skyrim
Create a backup of the SkyrimPrefs.ini file
Open the file, then scroll down to where it says [Display]
Add to the bottom of the section iPresentInterval=0
Save, exit, and play

How do I change the FOV?
Go to your My Documents -> My Games -> Skyrim -> skyrim
Create a backup of the skyrim.ini file
Open the file, then scroll down to where it says [General]
At the bottom of this section, add fdefaultfov=XX (where XX is the FOV value you want to change to)

This apparently fixes the mouse problem. Shouldn't have to go into the ini to do this though, mouse smoothing and acceleration are useless in games and I don't know why developers keep including them, little alone making them default!

Wouldn't it make more sense to have mouse smoothing as an option?

Oh, sorry, I forgot. Stupid freaking humans.

Apparently it is a 100% mod-friendly. Has that been verified yet?
