Skyrim - The Elder Scrolls V

Ugh, the game scared the hell out of me just now. I've been playing with surround sound for many years, but for some reason a skeever coming up from behind me and switching from right back speaker to left back speaker scared the hell out of me. I thought some wild animal was in my room. Usually I'm expecting it, but this thing came up fast and unexpected.

My character is getting stronger now, and I'm not struggling like I used to. I will still die if I'm just charging into battles where I'm outmatched. Tougher battles, I still do need some tactics to stay alive. I prefer to keep the difficulty on the middle setting, and not lower it. So if I die a few times, that's okay. One mistake I made was I had no sign. I missed it at the beginning of the game apparently. I picked up the astronach sign since magic users are still pretty tough for me.

As for the skill system I like it much better than Oblivion and Morrowind. This is easily the best Elder's Scroll game in my opinion. Yes they simplified things, but they added perks which helps make up for that. If only the perk interface wasn't so unwieldy. I've been concentrating my skills and perks so I don't get into a jack of all trades scenario. I've concentrated on Destruction, one handed weapons. light armor, restoration, alchemy, sneaking, and speech kind of goes up a lot on its own. My perks go into combat related trees. I did put one point into alchemy, and I think one into sneaking, but the rest has gone into destruction. light armor, one handed blades, and restoration (not too many here, but i like the one that gives magicka regeneration).

Do you lose anything when dead? Experince, gold?

No, you will just be returned to your last save and nothing more. You can however lose (some of?) your progress in your skills if you're sent to jail and are sentencing it by sleeping. It isn't the bullstuff in Oblivion where you get a permanent decrease of some random stats, luckily enough.

nope, it's game over. reload time. The only thing you lose is a little bit of pride. :)

I just hit a game breaking bug :/

Since the beginning, carriage rides haven't worked for me. I pay for the ride, I crawl into the back, and nothing happens. This is fine, I don't need to take a carriage ride, I'll just run.

However, in this quest, I have to take a carriage to a party, and there's no choice in it. So now I cannot move my character, and she is simply standing beside a carriage. I can look around, I can turn my character, but I cannot move, I cannot access my inventory, the map, cannot interact, etc.

Well, the game was fun I guess?

Some stats could increase in jail too, though. Not sure if this is the case in Skyrim.

So can you actually get drunk in taverns? Saw some people in the official forums talking about getting drunk in Whiterun and waking up in Markarth with a goat and the like. But when I have tried to drink in the taverns I only get the +stamina or whatever the effect is, not even the drunken camera wobble I was expecting...

That's a quest. If see a guy called sam in the inn in Whiterun talk to him. He'll challenge you to a drinking contest, take him up on it and see what happens. ;)

@salty mud: no, you just lose progress towards next lvl increase. it works like this for a reason: lowering skills means you can just go to jail over and over and keep leveling forever

Ah, thanks.

I hope there's a mod that adds a drunken camera effect and the possibility to use the ai tankard animations though. The atmosphere in the taverns is so much improved in this game I often like to just hang out there and return there every evening to get a few drinks and relax after a hard days work and rent a room for the night.

My character never sleeps, but I'm always staying a bit in a tavern if there's a bard. I don't care how repetitive the song is, I'm still loving Ragnar the Red (or whatever the name was). I'm always sad when there aren't alot of city folks in there though. Those taverns are there for a reason, NPC's! >:c

I find they are quite well trafficked in the evenings while they are logically enough quite empty in the middle of the day when everybody is working or middle of the night when people are sleeping. I find it very immersive to have a sort of daily rythm like the rest of the world does.

I'm really almost doing the hardcore roleplaying thing without even having intended to when I started or having any "house rules" like some people do. Only ever fast traveled once, go on foot everywhere, eat and drink once in a while, when I've traveled for a long time stop and find shelter (usually end up just clearing a dungeon though) and only do quests I feel my character would want to do.

I wouldn't mind seeing a hardcore mode in this game like FNV. I keep thinking to myself when playing, it's been a whiel since I slept, I better sleep so I don't get a debuff. :)

I use my bed or inns sometimes when I'm about to start on a quest and I realize it's like 10pm and I'm like "well I might as well stay in the inn for the night". Unless it's a stealth mission where night time is best.

I'm level 27 right now, kind of surprised that there aren't more perk points available. It seems I'll have a hard time pushing my chosen "support" skills as far as I'd want, and since combat skills are often most important for surviving, I doubt I'll have many characters with 100-level perks in things like Alchemy, pickpocketing, speech, enchanting, or some of the less combat-oriented spell schools.

My current character is focusing on Archery and sneak, I try to roleplay by putting some perks in alchemy and pickpocketing too (although lockpicking and speech almost go up faster than either of those just by themselves :( ), but it's just tough to imagine dumping enough points in these to reach the top tier perks, unless I keep playing this character well beyond my goals (finishing game + thieves guild + most Rift quests).

In Oblivion, your sneak and security skills could certainly go up while in jail. It was rare, but it happened to me and I seen it in the strategy guide I believe.

Level cap is 50.

I finally beat Krosis. I was level 23 and I abused 'Impact' for all its worth. The ability to constantly stagger opponents in invaluable. I basically kept him in a permanent state of paralysis while Lydia hammered his face in. Worked beautifully. I had to drink like 10 mana potions to keep him down, but I think it's well worth it.

Incidentally, the dragon word altar thing he's by actually gives you all three words to a shout. At least it did for me.

I heard some Beth employee say that there was a mathematical limit in the 70s, which I guess means you'll run out of perks and stats to level.
