Small Observations General Thread (things not worth separate threads)

by the way, do city-states have unique bonuses like they did in Civ6?
Yes, but it's a pool by type. So instead of getting the same defined bonus every game, when you become suzerain you pick from a pool based upon whether it's a cultural/economic/etc city-state.

You'd think they'd go for someone like the Seljuks if that was the case. I guess there's always the possibility since they are IP they can change, even ages?:dunno:
Because based off the timeline you would think the Ottomans are the best candidate for the Modern Age in the Middle East.

Yeah, I don’t get this. The Ottomans may not be in the initial DLC runs but they are absolutely guaranteed to become a civ eventually. Why waste future dev time making Istanbul a city state you will eventually have to rename, instead of picking a minor culture you know you are unlikely to ever make a real civ? Do they really think this is adequate representation while the full civ is missing?

City states have been in the game since Civ 5, and obvious future capitals like Seoul have had to be renamed twice now. It’s silly!

Even if this is somehow meant to represent the Ottomans before they grew into an empire, the correct capital of the beylik was Bursa (actually, originally Söğüt).

so each type of city-state has the same pool?
Unknown if the pool is determined for a particular game/age from a larger set of options or if the pool is always the same.

But in Marbozir's game, for example, this would be the initial pool for Economic city-states:

If you choose Gemstones for your first Economic city-state, if you become suzerain of a second Economic city-state it would be the same pool minus Gemstones.

Also it’s in the exploration age, which is interesting for a number of reasons: it wasn’t named Istanbul then. Is there also going to be a Constantinople of the Byzantines? Will the Ottomans not be a full civ in the modern era? If so there’s going to be a really dearth of middle eastern options then.
"Istanbul" was throughout the Ottoman period only one of several names for the city. Since until 1918 it was the largest Greek-speaking city in the world, many of its own inhabitants called it Konstantiniye. The Turks called it varously Istanbul, Istambul, Islambul, or Dersaadet, the last a nickname meaning "Gate to Prosperity" in Turkish. The government of Turkiye didn't start insisting that it be called Istanbul officially until the 1930s!
And by the way, in modern Turkish the name is spelled istanbul, since they differfentiate between a dotted and dotless 'i'

Buganda has no unlock requirements? At least, for Catherine playing Rome.

So the requirements might only be the completed ones
It may be something you can't do in Antiquity. I rather doubt America's only unlock is playing as Rome.

Lists here seem uncomplete. Songhai list in both screenshots is different, iirc. And it is strange Isabella is not listed as unlock for Spain (love otherwise, tematically the “reconquer” gameplay requirement)

Buganda remains the most questionable pick for the base roster. Now that we know that certain Antiquity civs can unlock Modern civs as well, it’s strange that they didn’t just add Ethiopia that is unlocked by Aksum.
They probably wanted a civ from southern Africa. They already had one each from West Africa and East Africa

Researching to find out more information about them, they pair well with the other African civs regarding navigable rivers and resources. Plus, geographically I assume they wanted to spread them out with Buganda being the most southern pick.

That screenshot has the Show All Requirements box unchecked in the top right (only partially visible). Might be there are no gameplay unlocks for Buganda, and if you're not playing a civ or leader who unlocks it there are no possible unlock paths. It is ALSO possible that gameplay unlocks must be in the age immediately prior (so to unlock Exploration civs via gameplay you accomplish something in Antiquity. For Modern unlocks you accomplish something in Exploration). If that's the case, this is simply reflecting that you're in Antiquity.

TLDR I don't think too much should be read into this screenshot.

Probably because the requirements might only isn’t satisfied because Catherine is not Isabella

If Sar’s comments are to be trusted, then all civs should have some sort of gameplay or resource unlock. So I lean more towards Buganda having its requirement hidden in Exploration.

Yep, but the screenshot in @thecrazyscot previous post did show several leader unlocks.

As he himself has posted above, probably this is due to the “show all requirements” being ticked or not (probably if not ticked it only shows the ones available to you)

I am very intrigued to know why city-states 'belong' to People, and whether two city-states of the same People have any relation to one another besides the cultural aesthetics. So far as I can see, no two city-states seem to belong to the same People, though Canaan and Retenu seem like possible candidates

Science Antiquity suzerain bonuses

Something that would be good to add is the ability to switch tiles with a city that has not improved them. Once they culture bomb them they are theirs forever, which can be annoying when a town eats the tiles radius of a city.
