Good citizens here, all ! (I'd count myself among them)
Let's raise the stakes a little, then :D. Just last month , a bag containing 100,000 euros in cash was found in the Dutch city of Breda and was returned to the police. If the rightful owner doesn't turn up within the year, the money will be returned to the finder, but who would take that kind of money to the cops ?*

I think I would (though it would give me horrible pain, but at least I could sleep), but that's temptation writ large.

* 3 people have come forward to claim it so far, all of them phony. It's probably money related to criminal activity in this case, so the chances of it being turned over to the finder are pretty decent.

In college I was working a summer job and left my wallet outside a convenience store (dumb kid mistake). Someone turned it into the local police station, they called me and I got it back, with all the cash. I never knew who turned it in.

IF I ever find a wallet, I will be happy to give someone else the same goodwill.

I would look at it for a second, wait for Perf to walk up, and then we'de melt the gold and throw molten coins at the passers-by. Good Times! :D

I would return it, untouched.

Taking pocket money from other's wallets won't help me to become rich, and, as many people have already point out, you can do some harm if you take it.

I once found a wallet stuffed with cash and turned it in to the police. The owner sent me a thank you card with a $20 bill inside.

Life is a game, and like in a game cheating is ultimately pointless since in the long run it doesn't really matter whether you win or lose so might as well just enjoy the game and not spend EVERY SINGLE ROUND CAMPING WITH THE DAMN SNIPER RIFLE.

EDIT- That's a "be nice and leave it alone" on the wallet question.

depends on the contents.. if there is ID i would probably give it back.. if not its mine.

You're a crook. Next question.

sharpe is it possible we actually agree on something?!?

When it comes to "lost and found"... If I was to find an item that had no possible way to identify the owner - I could take it without guilt because it's essentially "lost".

But a wallet - almost always it's going to have the owners name etc... I'd hope someone would return mine so certainly I'd do my best to get it back to the person if I found one. Nothing would be removed.

With ID: Turn it in to it's rightful owner with nothing missing.

Without ID: It's mine.

pretty much my way of looking at things except with ID id take any cash, if i didnt someone else would.

Answer to the poll:
Depends on the situation.
The only reason for not giving back to the owner - no identification marks (not only IDs - at least anything that can be said to identify the wallet).
Then it's mine since I have no way to find out whose it is.
Unless again it's in such a place that only few people walk there - then I think I would leave a note nearby that I found "a wallet" - giving no distinctive description - and my E-mail or something that can be used without spamming me.
Then I would give it to the owner untouched.
(Half-joke: It doesn't depend on the amount inside - only on the color of the wallet.:D )

PS I definitely wouldn't take it to police or something like that - guess why.:D

Yeah, the owner. :p

I would turn it back to its rightful owner if there is a way to know who that is.

But if there is no ID in the wallet, it's like finding money on the ground.

Of course, if I were to find $100,000 in cash in a bag on the ground, no way I would keep that to myself: I don't want the Armenian mob/the CIA coming after me! :)

Really? 100,000 would convince me to keep the bag.

If there was any way I could find the rightful owner, I'd return it. If I couldn't.. I'd guess just keep the stuff. I'd honestly feel kind of guilty about it though, so I really hope there was a way I could find the owner.

I would look for a phone #. If I found it I would call the person and make sure the address on their license was right (mine isn't). If there was no # I would keep whatever money was there and then return the wallet to the address on the person's ID.

By the way, for the record I lost my wallet twice (I think). Both times were on a Friday (both times I was working and Friday was payday) and both times I lost almost $200. The first time the wallet was mailed back to me with the credit card (by then cancelled of course) and all my ID but minus my money (I was still grateful if a tiny bit irked), the second time I got nothing back.
