A few days ago i noticed a weird person siting outside the apartment building next to my own. He has a laptop with him, and appears to be online all of the time. He is to be found there at all sorts of hours, but mostly at night.

In fact i just went out (it was midnight here at that time) to get something to eat, and there he was again...

What do you suppose is he doing? I thought of the weirdo 'explanation', but he is too persistent. Also i am not sure if proximity to someone's house enables one to hack more easily into one's computer (?). Lastly i thought of police work, but if that is what is going on then surely those people have a very limited sense of working under cover...

Oh, and no, i have no part in creating a super-virus to attack some unnamed western european country, so it is highly unlikely i am his target anyway ;)

My guess is he doesn't have internet and he's trying to use someone else's wireless nearby.

In the middle of winter?

Sounds somewhat logical i guess, but then again he has been doing it for many days now. Of course he might be homeless too.

This was my first thought.

He managed to get access to someone's wireless nearby and is just using it to get internet for free.

Do I see the beginning of a new short story? Perhaps it's you, but you haven't realised it yet...

My first thought was Aspergers, given the strange circumstances. Perhaps he found a routine and now he can't change it.

Do you live near Commodore? He may be using his laptop for the purpose of manipulating secret government satellites which use quantum physics to unlock and lock locks...

I used to sit on my roof with my laptop because my old 3G internet would not work at all inside my house.

Intelligence services, crazy, homeless, internet addict or aspie.

Don't worry, it's probably only pedobear using your wireless connection.

Are you sure you haven't mixed up your window with a mirror?

Don't laugh, these are the Greek intelligence services we're talking about.

Most likely there is a strong and unprotected wireless connection somewhere in your vicinity - you can test this yourself by going out with a phone or laptop when he's not there and seeing if there is a system he has logged onto. Perhaps he is poor, homeless, crazy or engaged in illicit activity that requires him to use an anonymous system.

If he was in the intelligence/police, he would be sitting in a car ;)

Perhaps budget cuts have forced police services out into the street, in more ways than one.

The guy is probably just using a wireless network with no password. If you can check whose network it is, it would probably help if you'd notify the owner that his network is unprotected.
