Spl01 - Noobish Players Try the Concurrent Format

well, let's see what else turns up, too, with the other save(s)

 4

I wanted to start my own (this one!) and when it was takign 'too long' for players to sign up, i joined others....i'm trying to find hte happy balance btwn too many and not enough :) (as SP is going stale...thinking of trying MP tomorrow mornin) ~

I've never played MP before. I still have a sour taste in my mouth from other MP games where racist 12-year-olds with screen names like noobFraginBiatch spend 23 hours a day drinking Jolt and practicing new cuss words.

The little I've seen of gamefly tells me it's not my scene. Always wanted to PBEM. SG's turned out to be a blast.

Group: please allow me to use y'all as a sounding board.

I'm thinking of starting a variant, Lord of the Flies, wherein the only land millitary I can build is a warrior. Ever.

The inspiration was Starcraft. If you ever played as the bug race, you'll remember fondly sending wave after wave of high-casualty fodder into the frey.

I envision an empire capable of spitting out 30-40 warriors a turn, seeing how many of them go splat against the walls of fortified cities. (For some reason, it also conjures up the image in the Wizard of Oz where the witch sends out a half million flying monkeys.)

Anyhow, I had to mod the game slightly to create a warrior that won't upgrade (else you can't build it after you have axemen). I also made unit maintenance 0 for my "flies".

Lastly, I'm thinking of also allowing catapults for two reasons. 1) First strike longbows, samurai, or cho-ko-nu will just eat up warriors without taking any damage. 2) 80% cities would probably never fall, no matter how many bee stings they take.

Does anyone have any thought on how else I might make this either winable or fun?

Thanks

I once set up a world-builder thing with my machine gun on a plains hill w/ forest, and had 64 barbarian warriors around it. Lost about 3 health, and almost all of them attacked me... Might not be too winnable, unless you attack early.

EDIT: I've also already thought of a variant for Spl02, but it'll wait for after this -- this SG may determine whether Spl02 is concurrent or regular.

yeah i can understand that about MP. A-holes and crippling lack of confidence kept me offline for long time. The only game i played online was Rise of Nations...twice. But, I found the Realms Beyond forum before I found this one and, when I first got there, i went from time wins on Noble to all types of victory on Prince, and now, i'm experimenting with monarch now, btwn SG games that is :D so, anywho, if or when i play MP, i want to try to be an RB MP game, if one ever forms. That'll avoid "Grand Wizard Johnny JOLT (TM - real jolt not included w/toy!)"

also:

Also, re: "LORD OF THE FLIES" ~ hmm...if you were going for a military win, then i'd agree with Splime ~ do it early or not at all...perhaps play as Musa (?) and use his UU (or whichever civ has teh UU that replaces Warriors) ~ otherwise, go diplo/space/cult

edit: I would sign up for that as an SG if it we were to try for a mansa military victory, btw

Rex, Charlotte, NC right? I can't see your home city in the reply but i think that's right...i almost went to school at UNC:Greensboro and have been to Asheville, aweseme friggin' town.

when's reporting day again??

spoiler zone ends tommorow at noon.

The Inca are the ones with the quecha, the warrior replacement. They have an anti-archery bonus too... Helps a lot for early conquest.

Hmmm.... trying to beta test Lord of the flies, but my mod crashes for some reason.

Splime, I'm gonna try out your world builder experiment and see if 60 or so warriors can take a modern city.

Also, my varient said nothing about airforce and navy. Might be funny to have bombers and fighters soften up the walls against which my warriors will go splat.

@Pholk: Yes, I'm a Charlotteian, but I'm a transplant from Boston. "Y'all" just kind of rubs off on you down here. If you're interested, I'd go in on a closed MP game with you. I'd like to avoid RitalinConqueror and the rest of the sixth grade.

Asheville, aweseme friggin' town.

It would be for Pholkhero. I guess it says something about my stage in life when I think, "Asheville: great furniture." Gettin' old. Gettin' old.

Okay. Worldbuilder experiment wasn't pretty. I set up a dual map. Me (G. Kahn) vs. Cyrus. I had about 20 cities, he had 1. I had no techs, he had all. I gave him tons of improvements and 10000 culture. I also gave myself all the wonders for sh-ts and giggles.

I also made all my cities pop 3-7. Cyrus' was pop 10. Then I put about 5 warriors in each of my cities and 9 infantry in his.

Put roads everywhere and mined/farmed/plantationed all the major resources for both sides.

Troop movement took forever.

And ever.

And ever.

I set all cities to continually make warriors. Most could get one per turn.

First IBT, (stupid me) cyrus upgrades all infantry to mech infantry. I didn't think I gave him any gold, so the AI upgrades must be free or damn close.

In the end it wasn't pretty. Even with three city attack promotions, warriors didn't even take a tenth of a point off the mechs in city. Outside the city, they'd do itty bits of damage.

Definitely would have to do cats if this were to work. (And a modern airforce.)

let's see what i got here for you:

01-2800
change tech research from hunting to mysticism

02-2760
bob go explore

04-2680
bob is now level 2 after whooping wolf's ass unscratched, promoted to woodsman I

05-2640
settler complete > warrior
now my concern comes true: i'll direct the settler to an *undiscovered spot* (at least in this save). unfair isn't it?
worker start building another farm

07-2560
bob defeats lion (0.8/2), 6 turns to heal, but before i'll check what we get from the hut

09-2480
map from the hut
pantloaf expand its boarders
thebes (huh?:)) founded (we need a mined hill here :\). will build a work boat

11-2400
mysticism discovered > polytheism

12-2360
wolf attacks bob (0.8/2)

13-2320
pantload builds warrior > warrior, almost size 2 now
jose the warrior will protect pantload

14-2280
buddhism founded in a distant land

15-2240
2nd farm done, let's do one now in thebes

17-2160
boarders of thebes expand
antoine the warrior done, will protect thebes
now build another warrior, city will be size 3 when it's done, then settler

18-2120
bob healed

22-1975
0 money in our pockets

23-1950
we found hinduism and convert to it
will research pottery now, we will need cottages

28-1825
thebes' farm done
i'll mine that hill now. oh, no mining yet, move lost, will build a road waiting for pottery to be discoverd

not much progress i think. if you guys want to go ahead and decide what is the best position, go ahead and do it, i am afraid i won't have the time to make a good analysis

(Spoiler Zone ends in an hour, so I'm spoiling now.) OK, so you got religion too. I don't see if you got that hut or not, I'll check the save soon. So, if we want religion, we take either autocon's save or rex's. Otherwise, mine seems like a good candidate. (Pholkhero, it sucks that you missed hinduism by that little... :( Would have been a great religion save otherwise...) Anyway, I'm gonna go analyze now, and autocon, does this mean you want to abstain from the vote?

My thoughts:

First of all: laughing my as- off.

I was certain that I'd be the only one nuts enough to go after an early religion. Not only did three of us try, but Autocon and I both switched tech immediately and bee-lined straight for it. So much for my "throw-away" attitude.

Next: Possible Cultural Victory?

Autocon's got better infrastructure than I do, but mine is a lot closer to Judaism. That's probably not a big deal, though, as I doubt any other civ is going for Judaism. Any of our saves will get it. (Maybe Splime's won't.)

The main disadvantage to my save is that I have nearly no defense. We can make up for that quickly, but Autocon's save starts us in a much better light.

The main disadvantage to Auto's is that his hut popped a map, while mine grabbed pottery. Tech-wise, I'm in a better place.

Third: Who the F--- needs culture?

Splime's is head and shoulders above the other three for a millitary or space victory. No discussion needed in my not-so-humble opinion.

Conclusion: What's it gonna be?

I've outlined my concern for the difficulty of a desert cultural victory. I think our easiest path is a Merchant of Venice sea faring economic power leading to space. It would be boring unless either of you has never done this before.

Culture route would be more interesting but much harder, I think.

I'll leave it to the others to decide which vic type. I'm 50/50 on that. If you choose culture, my vote is for my save. If you choose non-culture, my vote is for Splime.

For me, so far, I'm going with either my saveor rex's. Rex has all the techs autocon has, and then some. While autocon does have more millitary, rex has the fishing nets set up. For me, the dilemma is whether we want to win culturally or otherwise...

I've never done culture before, so I'm deciding on rex's save.

VOTE TIME:

You know the drill, copy and paste the lines below, and edit your vote into it. We're voting for who's save to take, and how many turns we will play. Also, note that while Spinoza has not playe, he has not stated whether he is playing for this round, and I am now establishing that all players have 48 hours to post "Got it", allowing for alternates (players not playing the round) to step in and take the save (thus extending the grace period an additional 24 hours). OK, here's the box:

Splime: Rex, 20 Turns
Pholkhero:
Rex_Tyranus:
Autocon:
Spinoza:

i know...i was so angry!! i contemplated swithcing right away and consciously thought.."fishing in 3? (or whatever it was)..i can wait that little bit!"

Are we agreed that if my save gets voted we're committed to cultural vic?

Splime: Rex, 20 Turns
Pholkhero:
Rex_Tyranus: 20 turns, undecided on save (waiting on a consesus in culture vs other).
Autocon:
Spinoza:

Wait, why did you fill in a vote for pholkhero?

Culture seems like a good way to go.
