Spl01 - Noobish Players Try the Concurrent Format

...I'm glad I checked.

Okay, so there's the downside to writing 8 page write-ups. Y'all get bored and miss the important stuff.

I'll cut the chatter and be certain to use all the abbreviations I can.

Of course, if you want to use my save, Splime, you're keeping Bob. Pantload, I can live without, but Bob stays.

Spoiler :
due to his lack of time, it would be hard for him to be an active instructor. The tech lead won't be TOO bad. A lead may not even exist if these are indeed separate continents.

EDIT: Ok, I'll keep both, but the next city would get my own chosen name, and if a third comes up, I'll name it maxfield or something

EDIT 2: holy crap, page 8 in two days...

Spoiler :
I didn't mean "active". It's just that sometimes you can learn a lot just by how another player would work the same situation. When you read this Autocon, I didn't mean anything other than "maybe he'll make lemonade out of these lemons."

OK, that makes sense. Wait, why is this particular discussion in [ spoiler ] tags?

Spoiler :
i don't know, but it's fun isn't it

re: 8 pgs/2 days: we're all just psyched to play the game i think

... I still think we can do a vote... we'll see what autocon pops up with.

double post duh!

ok here we go:

lots of food... nice, this city is gonna be huge if we can get enough health and happy faces for it (might be a candidate for the global theater). i think it will be our worker/settler farm in the beginning of the game then our gp farm

turn 01 - 4000 BC
* i kindly ask our settler to settle where he is, right on top of that hill. that will assure us 1 additional hammer for the rest of the game!
* nice villagers provide us with a map of the surrounding. i see another hut north of our city and 2 fishes by our NE
* this city will initially build another warrior for us. he will be used to go find some huts
* rookie question: what is tilted axis?
* warrior goes NW

turn 02 - 3960 BC
* tuff call now, mysticism or fishing (mining i'll save for later, don't see why we would want it right now). i'll go for fishing, main reason is because i find it more important to improve your land (sea in this case) and found more cities than worrying about religion
* warrior goes NW

turn 03 - 3920 BC
* warrior goes NW. what? is this an small island? hope not! (i see more fishes)

turn 04 - 3880 BC
* warrior goes NE

turn 05 - 3840 BC
* borders of our city expand
* warrior goes NE, in direct of the hut (more fishes?!)

turn 06 - 3800 BC
* warrior goes NE

turn 07 - 3760 BC
* warrior goes NE and reaches the hut. what we get? another map! (another? looks like the same :\)

turn 08 - 3720 BC
* watch out for the lion!
* warrior goes N. oops, dead end!

turn 09 - 3680 BC
* we discover fishing. surprisingly i'm thinking of researching sailing, something i do not usually do. but it is gonna take 17 (disregarding city growth) turns to complete! i'm between sailing and pottery. will give sailing a try
* our 2nd warrior is only 1 turn away from us, otherwise i'd change city production to work boat right away
* damn lion trapped us. rookie question: lion is not hurt, but when i right click him to see our odds, i see 2.0 (warrior) vs 1.5 (lion). any ideas why? away, i'll choose to attack him, we have 78% chance to win and we do, w/o a scratch

turn 10 - 3640 BC
* warrior done. i shall call him... ed. 1st one was tom. will build a work boat now. i'll also change the production from a 3f1c place to a 1f3p in order to get the boat faster but still growing the population
* ed goes E
* tom is promotted to combat I and goes E

turn 11 - 3600 BC
* tom goes SW and ed E

turn 12 - 3560 BC
* ed goes NE, tom S (another lion, we might be attacked)

turn 13 - 3520 BC
* tom defeates lion (1.4/2), will heal for 4 turns now
* ed goes E. cool, another hut, and another lion

turn 14 - 3480 BC
* ed goes NE to get 50 golds from the hut and is now side-by-side with the lion

turn 15 - 3440 BC
* ed defeates lion (0.6/2) and will heal for long 7 turns

turn 16 - 3400 BC
* zzz

turn 17 - 3360 BC
* tom is back, goes S

turn 18 - 3320 BC
* tom goes SE

turn 19 - 3280 BC
* tom goes SE towards the undiscovered part of the map

turn 20 - 3240 BC
* thebes builds a work boat, now will build another one, then a settler. i'll skip the worker for now
* work boat is now a fishing boat, providing us with 4f2c, we will use it as a productive cell of our town, which will grow in 10 turns, almost at the same time we are done with our 2nd work boat
* tom goes SE

turn 21 - 3200 BC
* tom goes SW. ed will be ready to go in another turn

turn 22 - 3160 BC
* tom goes SE, ed too

turn 23 - 3120 BC
* ed goes E, tom SE

turn 24 - 3080 BC
* ed goes SE. now he is on top of a hill and sees a wolf and silver
* tom goes S

turn 25 - 3040 BC
* ed defeats wolf (1.8/2), is promoted to woodsman I and will heal for a turn
* tom goes SW

turn 26 - 3000 BC
* we discover sailing. now i think, was it the right decision researching sailing? only time will tell. i will research mining now, aiming for BW, i can't wait to see where copper is
* hey, i have just noticed! no religions founded so far? what the hell?
* tom goes S, ed too

turn 27 - 2960 BC
* tom goes E. ed goes S and sees another hut and stone

turn 28 - 2920 BC
* ed goes S and gets hunting from the hut! cool!
* tom goes S

turn 29 - 2880 BC
* 2nd work boat is ready. city will now build a barracks for 1 turn, because next turn we will be size 3
* tom goes NE and sees plenty of furs in the ice
* ed goes SW and sees more desert

turn 30 - 2840 BC
* geez, tom didn't see the wolf coming! thankfully he wins w/o a scratch and moves SE and sees what may possibly be a neighbor island
* work boat is now a fishing boat. i put city in automated production and change from barracks to settler, who will be finished in 14 (!) turns. not quite used to used to it, usually it takes less time, as i'd chop some trees
* now wait, where do you want to build the city?? i would see the place with a red dot in 2nd screenshot (blue dots is where ed and tom are now). basically because it is the "less bad" place. there is enough food from crab and flood plains and 3 hills, so this could be used as a production city (not that it will produce that much, but you don't see so many hills in this map, at least not up to now)
* ed goes NW and sees a lion

next time i think i'll write less than i did now

i was not sure if i had to hit enter in the end of 30th turn and in the end i didn't

so what is next? :p

Nice turns...

Thoughts anyone??

Also, here's my save:

Nice turns, Autocon. Have you read all the crap we've written in spoilers? If not, I can condense it for you.

Tilted Axis = imagine the world turned 90 degrees. The poles are east and west, and the "globe" wraps north/south. It's weird. My question is, for circumnavigation bonus, do you go north/south?

The lion was listed at 1.5 because you have 25% vs animals. His 2 drops to 1.5.

thanks for the answers. yes i have read the spoilers (how do you do them btw? :D)

will take a look at the saves now

Okay, looking at all the saves...

The more I look at it, the more I'm certain that city 2 must be on that plains between the rivers SE. (Autocon's red dot). It's the only one that makes sense.

I think we have a shot at Hinduism. No one took it, so they're obviously researching milletary techs. Budhism will probably be grabbed by accident any turn now, but Hinduism might not be.

Autocon was the only one of us (I think) who grabbed sailing, opening the north.

Mine is the closest to city two. I'm biased, but I also really see advantages to early expansion. Left to my own, I'd have three cities before Thebes ever reaches pop 2. The dividends are exponential the earlier you get your next cities. For that fact alone, I'm leaning toward voting for my own save.

Damn, we've got a lot of food in Thebes. We need to make pottery (for cotteges) an early priority.

Autocon's working two fish and a floodplain. A settler can come really quickly if we went with his save.

Other thoughts?

make a spoiler by surrounding it in spoiler brackets. I can't type it or you'll just see the spoiler icon.

Begin spoiler: Left bracket "[" + the word "spoiler" + right bracket "]"
End spoiler: Left bracket "[" + forward slash "/" + the word "spoiler" + right bracket "]"

Here's a revised dotmap. I pieced together mine and auto's maps, but the locations are what matters.

Agree with most, Pholk. Can't read the serial killer handwriting very well. One note, it misses the cows and crabs due east of Thebes. Green dot first, yellow second. Maybe dark blue next? We need more exploration.

This spreads us out a lot. City maintenance might be tough. Of course, if we cottage the flood plains, we more than make up for it.

Red dot just doesn't blow my skirt over my head. It'd be a later priority for me.

Autocon has a better tech situation, though he lacks a worker and lacks AH. However, he got fishing, sailing (my save has 11 turns left of it), hunting, and some progress on mining. However, with his food surplus created by the two work boats, he gets a settler in the same time I do, and can get the worker out fast. I'm trying to decide between autocon's save and rex's. Rex actually has a worker and a milking operation set up, but auto has more technology, and the ability to pump a worker out fast. Therefore, I know my save is out of the question. If we take autocon's save, I think a scout and galley team would be the next production priority, and we can get the hut up north of the ithmus.

Dot-wise, green dot first seems like a good idea. Only four worthless tiles. Then, I would settle either red dot (3 worthless tiles) or the invisible dot 5 tiles east of Thebes (7 Worthless tiles, but two health resources).

Voting + Discussion Phase Starts Now BTW, because all saves are in. Also, as tiebreaker, I roll a die, not handpick. That's my final decision.

I'm gonna go analyze the saves now.

EDIT: Wow, never realized that pholkhero actually did get AH. (sorry, thought you cut out mid-way... I haven't been thinking straight.) I also notice pholkhero has extra commerce, meaning science (that never clicked for me) However, my vote is leaning towards autocon.

EDIT 2: It also seems like our UU is getting a skip. :( That's why I like UUs without resource need, ie. redcoats, cho-ku-nus, etc.

W/no one here, we could've had 5 horses and it wouldn't have done us any good!

I'm gonna analyze tomorrow morning, and i'll have my vote then. Night all.

hi guys, i have attached an excel file i put up to hopefully ease our decision

i am between mine and rex's save. not because the other two are not good (actually all four are not that much different), but rather because of the comments you have already made. i have more techs (including sailing) and city is grown and producing lots of foods, but i lack a worker and AH. rex is about to build our 2nd settler, but map is not well explored

as for this last point (map not well explored) i think we may incur in "cheating" as we do know that the map looks like, and we may eventually decide to use a map not so well explored

Spoiler :
test;)
