State of the Union - as it happens

Foreign policy stuff, especially on Iraq, was surprisingly concise, he's almost making me a believer.

The crap on the tax cut being "fair" and stimulating the economy though, BS.

Oh, and the stupid ban ALL human cloning. Forget about research on diseases, or that this will cause a nice brain drain to countries like the UK

Ahhhhh... that Democrat is on every channel. And he is talking about his grandfather.

I don't understand the excitement over these things. Nothing interesting in politics has happened during a State of the Union address; its just hoopla.

I'm surprised you're so interest :hmm:

Quite the contrary. It's an agenda setter. It's the annual attempt by the gummint of the day to take the initiative. It's like a color-coded guide to the areas that the advisors think need shoring up, and a testing ground for the latest spin.

Look at Clinton's health speech - a fascinating bit of theater that seems even more fun in retrospect!

I missed the State of the Union address.

I really wanted to hear it.

I have a bit of a cold, and I was feeling a bit rotton, so I took a nap. Unfortunately, I forgot to set my alarm to get me up. :( I turned on the radio just in time to catch the last two minutes of his speech. Then Gov. Locke came on with the rebuttal, and I turned the radio off again. Here is a man with the charisma of a box of rocks, with a droning delivery, saying things I've heard before.

Bleah.

Americans shouldn't complain about the way Dubya speaks. In Canada, Jean Chrétien can't speak english nor french right. (I can't spell english but I'm not Premier Ministre). ;)

Did the Prez release anything new on Saddam?

Or was it the same tired old crap?

I don't know how he does it, but Bush II can give a damn good speech. I think his greatest strength is the fact that he surrounds himself with brilliant people.

About the line, "let me put it this way - these people are no longer a threat to the United States", as an American, I loved it.

So february 5 is the next big date now. Next wednesday that is. It will be nice to ear whar Powell as to say at the UN.

EXCELLENT!!! :goodjob:

I agreed with everything he said except the most controversial issue (and it has nothing to do with Iraq).

The porblem was, though, he did beat aroun the bush (no pun intended). The Democratic Responce brought up alot of issues within what Bush said. Such as the tax plan only effecting people who make $300,000 a year.

If Bush ACTUALLY does what he said without the little fineprint, then I am amazed and shocked.

I agree with Greadius on the choice for the Democratic Responce. Why Locke? He did do a great job for the little charisma he radiates, but why didn't Kelly do it? Or the only Democrat who's actually being a Democrat; Ted Kennedy.

I think a lot of the front line volunteers are running for President, and it would have been too tough a choice for the DNC to pick one to deliver a major rebuttal so early in the race.

I would have thought it'd be Nancy Pelosi.

I disagree with your assessment of Governor Locke and his speech, Greadius. Locke brought tears to my eyes when I thought about what America could become if we returned to emphasizing what is good about this country.

Bush had me alternately laughing and enraged as he moved thru his sci-fi litany to finish off with four pages of telling us the state of the union of a small surrounded country on the other side of the world. I still ain't buying his bullship war, but I wish he would go rule that country in the middle east he cares so much about. He'd be a great successor to Saddam. Instead of hidden weapons, they'd get invisible shields...

That's funny, because I laugh when the Crats speak. I am happy after listening to our great and esteemed leader President George W. Bush. His words uplift my soul. We seem to have similar reactions but to different political viewpoints. I really don't buy the whole war against Hussain is bad thing.

In a speech like that, it isn't what you say it is how you say it. I've seen Gore's with more charisma than Locke showed. He was a bad choice... like I said, with the big candidates out it felt like a concession speech.

Anyone remember who gave the rebuttal for the Republicans in 1995 & 96?

1. I only watched the first half as well.

2. It is all hoopla - You're totally correct on that. I wonder how many people actually bought all the crap he said or think that it's really gonna happen. (This applies to all presidents, past and present, and their promises from the State of the Unions)

It was like he was Billy Mays trying to sell the product "Democrat". We DEMOCRATS do this, we DEMOCRATS support that. He could have said it in different ways, and tried to keep it like it wasn't a party thing (it is possible). Then it could have worked.

I actually watched the second half :D

I think R3 has a point about it setting the agenda, but I've heard most of these things dropped over the last few weeks & months to gauge reactions. There was nothing really new there.

 I WISH they'd have gotten Billy Mays to do it. Now THERE is a charismatic man who knows how to sell an image. By tomorrow morning people would think Democrats can win the war on terror, fix the economy, AND get out grease stains with no scrubbing.

i gatta admit, the ding king is a great product. even though i don't plan on denting my car anytime soon. but, if i do i know where to go! ;)

what about the whole gas thing? this should have been done years ago, and he's right when he says a baby born today could have his first car produce water instead of fumes... IF it's done right.

all of the things he proposed take alot of money. WHERE THE HELL ARE WE GOING TO GET MONEY FOR THIS CRAP IF HE'S MAKING TAX CUTS TOO????
