How did a smaller force like Orcadia fend of a larger one such as Caladonia? The Answer Donnchad mac Crínáin thought was in organisation, currently his army fought individualy, like the sea smashing the rocks, slowly wearing away...
He set about discussions for a new organisation that would keep the Caladonians, indeed the Scottish individualistic style.
The Result
The Caladonian Codex
1. The Army will be composed of Platoon of roughly 20 men.
2. A Platoon will be formed from a single family (extended even), this is to take advantage of, Blood Ties, i.e. loyalty to the Platoon.
3. The Eldest or most experianced memeber leads the Platoon, issuing orders and rousing words to his fellow family members (also another advantage he knows the families attitudes, he knows what to say to get the most out of the men)
4. 5-10 Platoons, a Squadron (100-200 men) are led by the most respected (in terms of military accomplishments, although social etc issues are also taken into consideration) Clan Cheifs.
5. Multiple Squadrons is a Battalion, which is genrally when the army is in full operation, as such it is usually commanded by the King, or the best strategiest.
6. Archers act as a skirmishing unit, unit size approx equal to one platoon , never engaging in a melee, springing ambushes and forcing the enemy out of position, for my main army (spearmen, Druidic units) to take advantage of. Once the enemy has engaged army in melee the archers are to pull back and concentrate firepower on enegaged units, then once that unit has started to fall back on a different one, if all enemy units are engaged they strike enemy supplies.
7. The Druids, Since membership rather than family ties are important here, thus Units are composed of regional druids so that they have a healthy respect for each other. Other than that they are the force that is held in reserve until the last moment, where they attack the weak points of the enemy line, or if need be supporting the weak points of the spearmen. Unit size approx 20 Druids.
8. The Navy always fights as a whole (due to current size) the navy is broken down into units of 5 ships with a lead ship. The lead ship choses a target and then all ships fire upon that ship until it is destoyed, then a new target is chosen.
The general feel of this is to ensure that maximum pressure is applied to an opponants weak points whilst the enemy is pulled out of position, and therefore only able to react.
OOC: possibly unfinsihed, I have to go now, so ermm yeah, might do more later.
