Strategy Discussion and Guides

Here are some recommendations and questions:

6. For Arabia, in theory, you could park a Galley outside of Mekka, then kill them when they move all of their units out.

Another method: Found Mekka before they spawn (better on incense, you get commerce for a few turns), refuse flip, their army will slowly approach Baghdad, and their sole settler will stay around Mekka, capture them, destroy a stack of theirs, make peace, and they will never be able to get a city. I think AI doesn't know how to do with this situation, so they'll just idle.

3. What do you use for rushing? Chariots work for me against the Greeks, but I was having a lot of trouble against the Romans.

For the Romans, I needed four Galleys full of eight Axemen, as well as two chariots and several other axemen stationed in Byzantion. It definitely took a lot of resources to conquer the Romans.

Unfortunately, I completely left Mysticism, because I was focused on getting the war techs. I should probably be researching that now.

The Great Lighthouse is being built in Athena, but hopefully I get it before the Phoenicians, who should be pretty powerful soon, because they will have no Romans to deal with.

I should probably go back to a reload so I can raze the other Roman cities.

I'll be going back to the game later on in the day. I'll see what happens.

Why does razing cities decrease your stability? Is it because of some balance issue that the player could exploit in razing cities rather than keeping them?

I'm not actually sure. This is the latest update. I think what mrrandomplayer is trying to say is that the other cities are not as useful to me as Rome, so getting rid of them will at least decrease my maintenance costs.

before the Great Lighthouse (and possibly Code of Laws) one has to be very careful about expansion, after having those 2 however it is classic civ-expanding and settlerspamming ;)
(at least in the SVN-version)

also razing used to cost stability because otherwise it would be too easy for one empire to become too powerful. Also, razing a city probably upsets the population which in turn would hurt your overall stability ;)

after seeing Sanguivorants attempt for domination with Egypt and the new SVN-updates I started a game with Egypt.

I felt horribly weak and backwards for most of my game and have no idea how one would achieve a UHV-victory here with the new slavery-mechanic (you do need GPs for Egypts UHV, right?) anyway.

But the event that gives all my axemen a free shock promotion made the game for me. My City-Raider-Shock-Axemen conquered Greece and Rome rather easily and by researching Aesthetics and then oracling Metall Casting I now feel almost equal to the Persian Empire (they've been incredibly strong in nearly every game I've played lately)

It is now 200AD, I own Carthago, Rome, Pompeii, Sparta, Alexandria and my capitol (starting pos)
I have all important wonders (Pyramids, Lighthouse, Great Library, Artemis, with Colossus and Colosseum currently being built)

What would you suggest I do now? Feudalism or Engineering for the Arabs? Should I let them Flip or fight? Carthago has the great cothon, so again, should I let it flip to the moors or not?...

My Egyptian domination went horribly, by the way =).

Surprisingly, when the Arabs spawned, they did not make any attempt to move over and conquer Egypt. This might be a glitch or something. Either way, don't allow them to flip over your cities in Egypt. If you lose your population there, you will be instable for the rest of the game, so fight them if you can, and if you cannot, maintain good defence.

I would say the same thing for the Moors, but I cannot tell, since I didn't have to confront them.

Keep your coasts guarded as well. Arab triremes really destroyed my naval cities.

You have made smarter progress than I did. Get the Colossus as fast as possible; it really helped my economy when I could barely make it at 10%.

If maintenance costs are too much, try relocating your capital to another city like Sparta. That city is technically at the centre of your empire.

Try to convert to Catholicism. Most of your empire is at a direct contact with Christian Europe, who have or will have massive armies pretty soon. You will want them on your side. In my game, a huge Holy Roman army went to fight the Arabs, and that helped keep my city Byzantion safe.

I am currently researching at ~60-70% (break even) and I think I never went lower than 60% (conquering cities left me with a lot of gold and I used my Great Engineer from the Gardens&Pyramids for an early Lighthouse)

And yes, I think I'll convert either to Christianity or Secularism in the next 150 years (I had Buddhism spread to my capitol and have almost finished the Shewdagon and Catholicism spread to Sparta and Rome immediately after it was founded somewhere)

If you want, you can try continuing my game (save attached)

My start as Egypt was:
Build Djanet. Research Mysticism, whip an Obelisk and add a Priest. Research AH and build a a Barracks and build 4 Chariots. Babylon will usually leave their capital with only 1 warrior so burn down Babylon. Next, invade Greece. Keep Athens and burn everything else. Build a settler to send to 1SW of starting position and build Ancient wonders. Build some Galleys and Chariot-rush Rome (if you've squatted Milan and burned Byzantion, it will be surprisingly easy, burn everything besides Rome). After getting your second GP, bulb Theology, trade it to Persia for Monarchy, and Oracle Divine Right ~turn 100. The problem for me is teching afterwards...

My instability is out of control. I just switched civics, and the instability caused by anarchy hasn't gone away after a few turns. How long is it supposed to take on Marathon?

If you are worried about the flip, Athens actually is flipped by the Ottomans, but Sparte is not.

Great! I kept Sparta and razed Athens because I wanted it to become the Great Cothon city but Carthago took that away from me :/

Also the described strategy probably won't work (quite as well) with the recent slavery-changes.
Still, thanks a lot and I might try some of these if I ever attempt Egypt again after this try - it is currently 1000AD, I own Jerusalem (with the Mausoleum, yay!) to Cordoba and Aksum as the holy Orthodox city and am currently destroying the Spanish (as the mighty, mighty Persians vasallized Arabia and I need a few turns increasing my army for them. I also hope that the Seljuks might help me a little here)

The AI (China and Persia and so a lesser extent India) is really trying to keep up with me. Persia has Paper, Civil Service, Engineering, Guilds and is currently researching Banking (1000AD)

I've never built a single Chariot in this game, since Axemen with free shock promotion are better against Hoplites&Legions (at least if those are in cities)

The current powerful Persia is a bit perplexing to me, considering much of the land they gain control over (Fertile Crescent, Anatolia, Persian plateau)
isn't very good in terms of yields and I don't think it's explained just by its control over Jerusalem alone.
Other than their starting tech loadout and the fact that they beeline Taoism, I can't exactly put my finger on why they've been so strong lately.
It may have something to do with the fact that they obtain a large number of cities in a short period of time, as the current paradigm leans on quantity over quality.

if anyone feels like playing for a domination victory with Egypt, you can take my saves, there basically is no one to be a real threat for you.

The "rebirth" (they've never existed in this game so far -.-) of Byzantium, taking away my 2nd most important cityduring my golden age took away my motivation for now. I got it back 2-3 turns later but now it is size 2 and all the infrastructure is gone. Still the only real thing to watch for now is the expansion stability and maybe the Ottomans.

What is the best way to play Brazil ? I'm currently going for a UHV with Brazil. I got 10 slave plantations with a 600 AD start but I'm still stuck with 2 pastures. I stupidly went to war with the Argentinians without proper military preparations and got my starting army decimated. I'm thinking of an alternative now, with two settler colonies. One goes to Somalia to pasture the horse and another to Southern New Zealand to get the sheep. I didn't keep the East African city of Sofala after I had taken it from the Portuguese, since I only went for the slaves. Perhaps this was a mistake as it gets the cow pasture. Some suggestions would be appreciated. The year is 1862 and I'm playing on marathon with least difficulty. This is the first time I'm playing with Brazil *( I had played earlier games but stopped it abruptly because it'd always get bugged :P . So far no bugs in this game ) .

haven't played them yet, so this won't be the best option, but it should be an easily doable one:
Conquer/Settle Mogadischu (?) - South of Aksum (Ethiopia, conquer it), there is a horse, some cows (Aksum) and I think 1-2 sheep. Plus you're right next to two beautiful shrine cities (Mekka & Jerusalem) that you can take when the time seems right to do so.

In general, it is probably best not to go to war with another newly-spawned civilization (like Argentina in your case) but to try to gobble up as many independent cities as possible or fight "ancient" empires that lack modern techs and thus modern defense units (also, they have a decent chance of collapsing, which usually helps you.

I just finished playing Brazil and I LOST ! Sucks :( . I got the first UHV fair enough, thanks to your suggestions. I have colonies all along the East coast of Africa except a Portuguese enclave I left them with around Tanzania. The first goal needs you to make Brazil a colonizing power apparently, because Argentina is too strong to bowl over with your starting army and you'll need slaves to be brought from Africa. Most of the times there won't even be enough slaves to buy with your starting goal. All in all, the first goal is stupid and unhistorical. The second goal is the one that's actually the toughest. In my first attempt I lost out the Wembley to the USA, I reloaded and rushed that project with all the gold I amassed till that point. My Great Engineer finished building Cristo Redentor and then.... world war 2 happened .. in 1927 ! USA, Portugal, and Britain declared war against me and drained my finances so didn't get as much gold as I would have to rush build the three gorges dam. But turns out the US built it with me only having finished 40% of it ! ... the third goal is just too simple and too pointless. The Brazillian UU is supposed to be one for mass deforestation and get some quick gold along the way. Or to develop jungle tiles really really fast. The goal goes right against this making that power irrelevant.

I'm going to try once more reloading from where I won goal 1. It seems we just have to tech and tech so that we get plastics in time to build the three gorges dam in time.
