The big fat oil cats (please join!)

...that in order to win, we have to sell ALL of the world's oil resources which means we need at least as many surviving AI civs as there are oil resources.

It's not specifically stated in the variant that we have to sell all oil resources. I think the primary aim of this variant is to "own" all of the oil by the time a win condition is met. Selling them for money is obviously what we'll do, but I don't think UltimateGP meant we have to sell the lot.

Oh, and playing right now...

:D

Well then, that should be a lot easier.

Oh, and playing right now...

You go, JOE!

1030BC - Inherited Turn
I feel Kumbi Saleh is under threat from the nearby barb city, so I send the nearby Warrior to fortify in the city.

kumbithreat.jpg

Also, I can't see why a Work Boat is being built here, when there's no border expansion due any time soon. Since it's close to growth, I'll leave it, then change to a Worker.

1000BC - Turn 1
Yawn...

985BC - Turn 2
Errrr...never mind, eh?

greatest.jpg

970BC - Turn 3
Djenne's Worker has finished roading to the Stone, but Masonry is still a few turns away, so I send him West to a floodplain to start a Cottage.

955BC - Turn 4
Yawn...

940BC - Turn 5
Hatty comes knocking for Open Borders, and she purty, so how can I turn her down? Also, I stop the Work Boat at Kumbi Saleh and start a Worker (18).

hatty.jpg

925BC - Turn 6
Kublai also comes calling, but I deny him Open Borders...he's unpredictable, and letting him see we only have a few Warriors may spur him to slap us about. This would be bad.

kublai.jpg

910BC - Turn 7
Masonry comes in, and we start Alphabet (30). I feel that Confucianism may be possible, so if we get Alphabet, we can trade for missing religious techs and research CoL...feel free to change this if you feel we have a shot at The Oracle to get CoL. I think we may have missed the boat on The Oracle, hence the Alphabet route.

The Worker at Timbuktu finishes a Pasture on the Cows. I think it's important to Kumbi Saleh hooked up to our empire, so he is ordered to build a Road.

worker.jpg

When he gets there, he can build a Quarry on the Marble, and maybe we can have a crack at the Parthenon? Great Artists may play an important part in this game, and Parthenon will help no end.

895BC - Turn 8
Monty comes calling, and I make the same decision as I did with Kublai for obvious reasons.

monty.jpg

Also...

stonehenge.jpg

Timbuktu has started a Sword (6)...I think it may be a good idea to use Swords against Turfan...we should only need three or four to destroy it, then we can settle in our marked spot. We also need the power boost...at the moment we're easy pickings if a horde of Archers shows up..unlikely, but I've been caught out before.

I did think about building Pyramids instead...feel free to change this if you feel we're safe for now.

880BC - Turn 9
Yawn...

865BC - Turn 10
Djenne finishes a Warrior and starts a Library (45).

Jesusoneez

Are we just playing 10 turns now???

Just need the save mate.

Ten's usual after the initial two turnsets, and I'm a sucker for tradition.

I find that it's easier to keep up with what's going on from save to save if everyone has ten turns, but don't let that stop you from playing more.

I guess I'm pedantic that way. :D

Oh, and the save?

I got it and will likly play later tonight.

10 suits me fine as I agree it's easier to keep up with the game that way.

I guess I'm pedantic that way.

Me laughs

Turn 1

Wkr at Djenne start second cottage

Turn 2

zzzzzz

Turn 3

sword finished in Timbuktu start another

Turn 4-7

zzzzzzz

Turn 8

2nd sword finished start another

Turn 9

zzzzzzz

Turn 10

wkr finished cottage start work on Quarry

Not much to report at some point we should build a library in Timbuktu. We need some minimal defenses at the other cities before attacking just in case he counter attacks.

Frankcor it's all yours enjoy....... Jesusoneez any luck finding another player......(guess not no one posting here)

I presume we were beaten to Stonehedge -- last I knew were were working on it. That's why I started that workboat at Kumbi Saleh, anticipating a culture boost.

I've got the save and I'm playing now.

Frankcor,

I think we got SH according to the pictures above but alas they have disappeared into the land of server disruption or link break.

My turns were rather uneventful.....

Well, this turnset has bad news and good news.

Turn 1 (715 BC) I send a swordsman from Timbuktu to scout that barbarian city to our NW.

Turn 2 (700 BC)
Timbuktu finishes: Swordsman
Djenne's borders expand
Kumbi Saleh's borders expand How did that happen? Oops, I see we did complete Stonehedge after all.

IBT:
Spoiler The bad news: :
oil7.jpg

A barbarian axeman appears NE of Kumbi Saleh.

Turn 3 (685 BC)
Timbuktu begins: Axeman
Kumbi Saleh finishes: Worker I divert the swordsman heading to Olmec to retake Kumbi Saleh.

Turn 4 (670 BC)

IBT:
While defending, Warrior loses to: Barbarian Axeman (3.40/5)
Kumbi Saleh lost

Turn 5 (655 BC)
Timbuktu finishes: Axeman

Turn 6 (640 BC)
Timbuktu begins: Library
Some good news at Kumbi Saleh, Swordsman promoted: City Raider I
While attacking, Swordsman defeats (4.86/6): Barbarian Axeman
Captured Kumbi Saleh (Barbarian)
Kumbi Saleh begins: Work Boat

Turn 7 (625 BC)

Turn 8 (610 BC) Forces approaching Olmec. I crack the :whipped: at Djenne

Turn 9 (595 BC)
More good news, at Olmec, While attacking, Swordsman defeats (5.22/6): Barbarian Warrior
Captured Olmec (Barbarian)
Djenne finishes: Library

Turn 10 (580 BC)
Djenne begins: Barracks

We can whip the library at Timbuktu this turn. I suggest we try to trade for Archery as soon as Alphabet arrives in 2 turns. Warriors are not going to get the job done as city garrisons.

We're still on track for our strategy. Next step should be to pick our first target for expansion -- Turfan? There are two Combat I Axemen and an Archer garrisoned there. Darn, Khan just built Ning-hsia south of Timbuktu -- worse city siting than Turfan. But there's only a single archer there. We need to beef up city defenses first. Djenne is very very exposed right now.

A barbarian axeman appears NE of Kumbi Saleh.

I personally always get Archery early just for that reason. Archers with CD1 can hold out against axemen.

Good job Frankcor we have another city now.. wooohoooo

I would get archery build some archers/attack Khan.

I hate losing cities and having to start again although I don't think much was built in Kumba Saleh.

Warriors are really useless and I never felt comfortable garrisoning a city in later age with them especially when surrounded by other civs.

Rock and roll, my turn comes around already (I'm quite happy playing with three if you guys are, this is a small map so should be quite a quick game).

"Got it"...will play tonight after England have thrashed Trinidad & Tobago in the World Cup. :D

I'll use my ten turns for military build-up against Kublai. Swords and Axes with City Raider I should do the job. Might be worth getting a couple of promotions from the barb city as well...

I am ok with it too Jesusoneez.... So when my turns come ATTACK!!!!!!
KK and take a few cities or all. (just kidding just a few)

As it turns out, I don't think we lost much at all. In fact, the cultural borders popped right back out to their 2-tile radius as soon as I recaptured it. I don't recall what we had built there before. A barracks? The only thing remaining is the free obelisk we got with Stonehedge.

Jesusoneez...

Bet you're a happy camper after England winning. Congrats...
and don't drink too much ale now...

They beat two teams? Trinidad AND Tobago? I'm impressed.

How 'bout dem Yanks?

The US have played one game so far, and lost 3-0...can't remember who they played.

Very happy about them qualifying for the second round. I'm watching Sweden vs Paraguay...they're in our group as well and it may decide if we go through as group winners or runner up (if I've done my maths right...which I probably haven't).

Anyway, enough about football (or "soccer" as those across the pond insist on calling it), I have a turnset to play. :D

You're kidding right?

Just we have American/Canadian football too which can be confused so I guess they called European football "soccer".

Wow I guess that's makes me "on deck" reporting for duty SIR....
