The changing tone of OT

Is it just me or has OT recently got a lot more about personal and local events and a lot less about international ones? The general tone of the place seems to have changed...

Tell me about it. I can't fulfill my role anymore as the relayer of events in the world.

I often tell my mother about all the new happenings - elections, disasters, policies, etc. With OT's recent decline in these topics, I've run out of juicy information. Last topic of interest was the Cold War between AZ and the cities.

And I'm too lazy to regularly check BBC or some such. Darn.

All that said, OT only catches so much... no topic ever was made on that one soldier who was discharged after being injured and had all his benefits revoked or some such, for example.

I do hope we get the news flow up soon, however.

The media has been quiet lately, and sometimes personal opinions or events can generate quite an amount of discussion.

There is this economic and Euro crisis, but that is way over most people's(including me) heads.

Come November there will be the howling and gnashing of teeth over orchestrated indignation and all will be well.

True, I try and keep an eye on it, but in truth I have little understanding of what is happening.

Two years ago, the Cheonan would have spawned a 500 page thread here. Now, most people reading this will have to google Cheonan.

The media has been quiet lately, and sometimes personal opinions or events can generate quite an amount of discussion.

Even if the general consensus on opinion posts does seem to be, depending on the topic:

Liberal OP: "Oh yes, I agree." Or, to be fair, "I agree, but would add..."

Conservative OP: "RAWRRR! Go back where you come from Con! BTW all ur parties are right-wing! O and ur backwards and immoral!"

Oversimplification I know, but that does seem to be a general idea. :p

Now, when there are moderates and actual discussion, rather than constantly arguing about President X being the antichrist or Messiah, or questioning the validity of political beliefs, or the integrity of a Party, things do get quite entertaining.

Having a civilised debate, rather than one filled with ad hominems, personal attacks, and partisanship galore, is quite enjoyable for me.

This is true. It will be like my "Conservative OP" example.

This will generate massively anti-Republican sentiments across the entire forum. Though if the British election is any indication, the collective opinions of OT do not represent what will actually happen by a long shot.

It will still be epic to see this place turn into Democrats '10, however.

I'm not around here as much these days, but it does have a different air about it. Different posters I guess along with the continued segregation of content.

The only interesting current event going on seems to be the Jamaica thing. I"m sick to death of the oil spill and Rand Paul crap. If someone wants to make a thread on Jamaica that'd be cool but I'm lazy and would rather make my threads on Elvis vs. The Beatles.

And it's going to get better. You see, I have become more active in OT as of recent months due to getting over my phobia of it...

...and school is about to get out. I won't be going to college until Spring Semester.

Meaning, OT gets about half a year or so of fun with me. :goodjob:

I hope to become an OT regular, so I'll certainly help shift the discussion... for better or for worse.

But indeed. New posters have certainly shifted things. We've gained some far lefties, some far righties, and people somewhere near the middle(me).

Yeah, the many different subforums is part of it... if I could change ones thing, I would reintergrate some of them.

I haven't noticed any change in the focus (from int'l to local or personal), but I'm not on here much.

I'd love a thread about the ongoing European debt crisis; that's easily the biggest story since the election in the UK, and something that will affect the day-to-day lives of everyone in Europe for the next decade.

Go for it.

I don't have time to make the OP the thread deserves, but I might link an Economist or FT article or something to get it going.... Maybe tomorrow....

OK, cool. why not dumb it down just a bit too, so the uninitiated can gain some insight?

I understand the sentiment. I've scaled back my economics posting because I got super busy and some side ventures took off for me, but I was beginning to feel as if posting was a waste of time as the most visible OT posters seem to be highly partisan with immovable viewpoints. It is not fun arguing with a brick wall.

You do not argue with brick walls. You hop in your bulldozer or find some destructive object and tear the wall down.

Seriously, I agree. This is why I stop debating after two or three posts with people who cannot be moved, no matter how many varying arguments I supply.

Well, I almost never change anyone's minds, but it's still fun to see differing viewpoints etc. When discussing things like Iran, North Korea, military stuff etc, people can exchange views in a civil manner. When it comes to politics and that, it's generally pointless.
