The changing tone of OT

yes, the media torrent has dried to a trickle, who dammed our media?

Well, I almost never change anyone's minds, but it's still fun to see differing viewpoints etc. When discussing things like Iran, North Korea, military stuff etc, people can exchange views in a civil manner. When it comes to politics and that, it's generally pointless.

Because bigotry - in the true sense of the word - is unfortunately the key value of most people. They see that you happen to be on the opposite side the fence, but rather than try to reason with you to shift a little bit... they quickly degenerate into calling you an idiot, or, rather, the forum rules-safe "that post was idiotic."

I blame the fact we're all voters and not politicians. As politicians, one generally has to agree to work on compromises, lest you lose that precious seat of yours.

As a voter, by contrast, you can be as loud-mouthed, incorrect, uninformed, and completely unwilling to compromise as you wish.

If we all met like legislators, I imagine the quality of OT would skyrocket as actual civil discussion and compromises would be made, rather than the typical, "my way or the high way."

Those who I have met IRL have been articulate and interesting to discuss current events with, fwiw.

Well, you kind of have to be polite in reality. :p

Otherwise you will soon feel as if a truck hit you. And I'm not talking being super-drunk.

I don't know if anyone has noticed, but this sub-forum has been totally Dominated by stupidity recently.

It's not a recent occurance. This thread pops up every couple of years. I'm pretty sure if it was true everytime we'd be below the baseline.

too many libertarians with their strange deluded views

Amen to the 3000th power.

I don't know, I think it's kind of like how conservatives always talk about how much better is was "in the old days". I don't think the quality has really changed one way or another. I think it's more we're getting an influx of new members who are replacing an old guard that is posting less and less frequently, and this unfamiliarity with new members leads you to believe something has fundamentally changed in OT, when, in reality, it's just the same teapot with a different colored cozy.

Come November there will be the howling and gnashing of teeth over orchestrated indignation and all will be well.

Sounds like plan. Agreed, since the elections are coming up.

I kind of welcome the change actually. Certain new posters have made describing certain political issues impossible...so why not discuss other stuff?

I think that those veteran posters, here, have gone through the major international and contraversial topics so many times that we're disinterested continuing to argue them as often as we used to. We are getting older, too. I would not be surprised if the average age of the regular posters has climbed over the past decade. It is certainly nothing to lament.

The new members also tend to be younger, and thus less educated & experienced, more ignorant, they are on average worse spellers..

Then again maybe I'm not giving our new posters enough credit..

Perhaps not, you're a Chelsea fan and we don't hold that against you. ;)

Everyone likes to think they're apart of the golden generation whereas in all likelihood it is just the same as always.

To be honest, the quality of OT has fallen so low that most of the classic posters, back from ~2005-2007 have left, or don't post frequently anymore.

OT has been reduced to the point that *anyone* can post here with the most asinine and ******** ideas, and as a result, the moderation is so intense, all the posters are wrapped in 20 layers of cotton wool and there is no right to call them out on it.

The anti-spam moderation has also gone up a hundredfold, again due to ******** posters making absolutely moronic spam threads. There was a golden era when spam here was a true art, and I know for a fact a great number of posters looked for those threads.

Why are the threads about the fossilated foetus, the "i losted my pants" and such remembered more fondly than most?
Pure spam, aye, but bloody fun, and definitely conducive to the feel of the community; we have lost pillars of our community such as Mr President and stratego as a result.

In fact, and I can say this from experience, the only posting wortoh a damn in OT is Drive By Trolling; a quick insulting, but ambiguous one-liner, before you disappear forever.

Moderator Action: Trolling.

libertarians have crazy ideas and rand/ron paul is a racist

I think of it like a cycle. Sometimes we get too much of the world and we need some more personal discussion. Then when we feel like narcissists (though some of us never tire of talking about ourselves ;)) we go back to world news.

So fret not! This too shall pass.

Moderator Action: Enough with the oblique swipes at other posters and moderators. We've said this so often: If you see a post or thread that violates the rules, REPORT IT! Moderators have lives too, and even though we're very dedicated to this forum, we cannot be here 24/7, or read every post in every thread. There just isn't the time or enough of us for that. So we depend on the members to help out by reporting problems. We appreciate when they do so politely, concisely, and without using profanity or getting angry with us for problems we either didn't know about or can't fix (or at least not immediately).
