At this moment the morning program of German public TV does a piece on the goal keeper of the German national team.
I hate it. It is full of celebrity worship, stupid catch phrases and not at all funny generic jokes
I actually never watch TV. It used to be good. Now it's very bad. You probably need to have subscription channels like HBO to have some decent stuff. When I was at a friend, I zapped and found out there was literally nothing to watch.
"I like to keep in touch" is frankly a very horrible reason to watch TV, since empirical research suggests that using news media (and I assume you do want to "keep in touch" with TV through the news) causes information overload that in turn releases nasty hormones. Actually, we might as well want to censor news into not appearing in daily and weekly periodicals, since such frequency is much more than our body can actually handle.
That only keeps you in touch with youth culture or nerd culture. Both are rather irrelevant to me. Since you need neither to socialize and none of it to grasp the world. To me it is a guilty pleasure if anything.
You are aware that all the TV news channels also have websites and youtube channels where they play exactly the same stuff you get on your TV, but for free? BBC and Channel 4 also have their own websites with live streamed news and their TV programs.
Equally I could say that TV is nerd and youth culture because of MTV and Simpsons.

I read this while watching a review of the Matrix. How ironic.
Anyways, I don't see how the news keeps anyone in touch with anything. The information it presents can be found from the internet with less bias involved.
I hate my media for having some kind of irrational fear that the Moslems are totally next door and they're coming for you.
I also can't believe the noise they made out of the fact we parked our army at the borders. "diplomatic scandal"? Come on, the Bulgarian army barely breaks 60k! Half of it is in Afghanistan/Iraq!
And I don't want to start about the talking heads saying "well, you see, all these illegal immigrants are a threat to national security..".
Of all the things going wrong with the world and CNN spent all of last night reporting on how people in the Northeastern US had to shovel snow yesterday...after a snow storm.

Usually, the problem of national media of any kind is that make reports about topics that have no relevance whatsoever to viewers. Nobody in the West should really have to care about Afghan Taliban.
