[RD] The Last Jedi – Another Cold Rehash

I'm disappointed in the direction the storyline went in the respect of the two main leads. I would have reversed their outcomes.

I haven't seen the film yet but I did read a spoiler-free interview with Mark Hamil in the Big Issue, where he mentions that he disagreed with pretty much everything that Luke does in the film.

Can we have a link to that interview?

Also, two things I didn't like were
Spoiler :
Phasma and Snoke not really being developed (again).
For the former it's too tiresome to just see her as a flat character, a mean *****. For the latter, well, if he really died, then what are we ever going to know now…?

(yes, I focus on the villains because without credible villains the heroes don't have that much to stand against, except their own flaws).

No, no, no, watch it first. It's not a perfect film (there really were too many jokes, too often) but you shouldn't let yourself be driven away by one or two bad reviews on an Internet forum.
I didn't mind the frequency of the jokes, as much as that so many of the jokes were written as gags. You can work humour into an adventure franchise, but it should be organic and character-driven, if you allow the jokes to start dictating the dialogue or the action, you're shifting into comedy and the tone and pacing ends up all scrambled. It's mostly a problem in the first half of the film, as in many other respects they seem to find their footing later on, but it is a bit of a distraction.

It's also a distraction if you're in a cinema with a lot of idiots who laugh at the jokes and then they think that anything is yet another gag, as if this were Airplane!Starfighter! starring Leslie Nielsen.

Found it!

(Edit: it's the shareware version of the article. But read: How do Jedi celebrate Christmas?, on the Jedi religion)

One last spoiler-free observation (I think TF will agree with this) is that I saw Benicio del Toro appear and the word ‘AVI!’ came to my mind. In a heavily Ashkenazic accent.

I liked what they did with Luke's character but I can certainly see how other people may not take to it. It is a big departure from the Luke of the original trilogy but the reason given for this departure makes a lot of sense to me.

Also, the porgs were not annoying. That's worth something.

The porgs were the worst part for me. Every time I saw them on screen I heard "MARKETING!!" screamed in my head.

Argh, yes, those things were completely unnecessary. Probably they sent in an anonymous order for 50 million plushies to a secret factory in Thailand and then it was too late to take them out of the film.

Porgs, Gungans, Ewoks, Jawas... Star wars is full of annoying cute things....well some cuter or more annoying than others...

Well your avatar seems to suggest at least some sort of passionate relationship to cute beings.
Sorry I have nothing to contribute and probably won't see the movie til January because since everything is organized via whatsapp groups it can take forever to organize things with certain people.

You can watch it alone, as I did. Everybody was busy not mentioning the subject so I went for a walk and found a decent cinema at a decent ticket for less than four US dollars at the current exchange rate.

Today I also had a practical demonstration of the difference between important and urgent. It was important to find which was the right queue. It was urgent to find the loo.

The universal teenage desire to be an insufferable edgelord.
Wait until you see what he does in this one.

Yeah I agree. Like it's Star Wars, give it a shot. Before last night, I thought it'd be impossible for me to dislike a film, so these things are constantly changing and moving.

Spoiler :
Yeah Phasma was just pointless and wasted again. Like we've seen so little of her that when Finn called her CHROMEDOME it just totally fell flat.

The Snoke death scene was painful.

"I CAN SEE EVERYTHING"
*Kylo clenches fist as if to use the force*
"I KNOW EVERYTHING YOU THINK"
*oh boy now the lightsaber is SPINNING right on his ARMREST will he nOTICE*
"NOTHING WILL EVER SURPRISE ME"
*Lightsaber finishes FULL ROTATION pointing RIGHT AT HIM and OH WOOOOOOOOOW now it's ON hooooooooly craaaaaaaaaaap that was so uhhhhhhhhh... something. Something bad*

I must admit, my first thought on seeing the porgs was "I WANT ONE!!!!!"

Aye. It might be better upon a rewatch. Perhaps you went there with too much of a hype?

And I see you sneaked in a Spoiler…

Spoiler :
Phasma's lines could have been given to Hux and Phasma could have led the attack on the Rebel Resistance base. Or a special boarding party when they hunted down the fleeing fleet.

It might just be that, as with The Force Awakens, she had many more/better lines but they were cut off because as long as the stormtrooper in shiny armour makes an appearance you can still shift dolls and posters and what-not? Seriously, a stormtrooper whose armour appears to be impervious to blasters? Wow. That could have made her be a little Terminator, say, boarding the medical frigate and clearing it out with a small party of soldiers. Which would have explained Snoke being practically undefended, too.

And Snoke's death… yes, I also wondered how none of the guards noticed. In the old EU the red-armoured Imperial Guards were stated to be Force-sensitives. At least they weren't mooks, but the stormtroopers should be as badass as these.

I must admit, my first thought on seeing the porgs was "I WANT ONE!!!!!"
They looked really tasty.

If i had a Porg, I'd name it Perogi!
Not sure if i'll see it in the theater, that would require me to go to a place with strange unfamiliar people during daylight hours.....:shifty:
I don't like being in areas with more than 5 unfamiliar people....people scare me.:shifty:

What sort of breading would you use? Those suckers are big.

I did not think it was the mind numbing disappointment that seems common. However, it seems like the unneeded middle child.
