Question:
I'm writing an email to a department head asking for a reccomendation for an advisor as I don't know most of the professors in the Foreign Affairs or Economics department all that well. When I begin the email, should I write "Dear Dr. ________" or something else?
Any comments or advice relating to this would be helpful.

Always the highstest title. Since you say that he/she is a department head, then he/she is most likely either a Prof. or a PD, so recheck that.

yeah "do you like me" aren't really questions worth an answer unless your a thirteen year old girl.

well the few remaining survivors in the basement do ;)

... no, i'm just thinking that kind of lack of self esteem and need for constant external approval is characteristic of children or young teenagers. a 13 year old girl suits that nicely :P

I lack self esteem (though I cover it up with a bluff exterior) and I need constant approval (but I don't ask for it from anyone).

I don't go for anyone younger than 19 or outside the 3 to 17 foot height range.

But Mr E is such a likeable fellow. Who can help liking him?

But you don't ask any questions worth answering.

Right. I am a world famous video game player. I even wrote a book about my career :D.

How does the Super Bowl concept differ from the titles of prior seasons? And are pre Super Bowl titles considered as valuable? Would the "winningest" team of all time be based on all titles or just Super Bowls?
Usually, teams don't refer to titles unless they were won after the beginning of the championship games between the AFL and NFL, which started after the 1966-1967 season. The post-merger period (usually fudged; the Super Bowl technically started a few years before the merger, but it was part of the integration process) is usually held to be the beginning of the era of modern football.

While Super Bowl III was actually the first title game to be officially called a "Super Bowl" and is one of the more iconic moments in American New York sports media historical lore, the first and second "Super Bowls", both won by the Packers, are also counted.

Usually, pre-Super Bowl titles either aren't mentioned (unless the team in question has no Super Bowl wins but some pre-merger titles, like the Browns or Lions) or are mentioned with an asterisk. So the Packers, for instance, are frequently cited as having four Super Bowl titles and nine pre-Super Bowl titles. In some contexts, pre-merger Super Bowls (before 1970) are also given short shrift, hence the oft-quoted statistic that the Jets and Chiefs have not won a Super Bowl in the post-merger era (the Jets won Super Bowl III and the Chiefs won Super Bowl IV).

Since I'm 100 years old and very primitive when it comes to modern-day modern culture, can anyone explain to me exactly what is Reddit, what the point of it is, and, if possible, why and how people enjoy it so much? I mean, I've been on Reddit pages, but I don't know what the heck it is.

I'm not a fan of reddit, but from what I've gathered its more or less just a giant forum, except with an eye-bleeding interface, thousands upon thousands of users/posts, and an upvote system. Also jokes tend to go there and die.

But I'm not totally biased so take my description for what its worth :)

1. internet compiler of interesting stuff/discussion

3. it's usually pretty funny and/or insightful

How effective, or useful or useless, are petitions?

I could think of so many variables to that question that would affect it's success.

The subject matter.
The determination and organizational skills of the petitioner
The attitude of those receiving the petition

A motley crue petitioning a dictator to introduce free elections will most likely be ineffective.

One person petitioning Mitt Romney to agree with him or her on any given subject for two minutes is likely to be a raging success.
