recent? none (i think). But the british goverment has done plenty of theft in the past to compensate for the recent stability.

Why doesn't someone cite some legal basis in international law, instead of these appeals to emotion?

I'ld like to see what the British Museum has proposed put into place. Share the marbles between the two museums. For this to happen either the Greeks would have to accept the British Museum own them or at lest give some sort of garantee they wont just take them. If they were going back onto the acropolis I'ld say hand them over unconditionally.

The big issue is that most things in the museum are from somewhere else. Most things were bought from people who did not really represent the current gov of the places they came from. If the marbles go back then the Rosetta Stone is next, and so on and so forth. Essentially it would be impossible for anyone to have a museum. This is why the museum insists that wherever the marbles are they are agnowledged as the legitimate owners.

Apart from the argument that the marbles belong to their homeland, there is a less sentimental one: the Acropolis has far more visitors than the British museum, so by moving them to Greece more people will have access to them :)

Similar order of magnitude of visitors, the Acropolis might be over ten million with the museum under ten million but not such a huge difference.

the greeks should have greek objects, espiecialy ones of that importance. the brits are just stealing peoples good again and its wrong. :(

Again? They stole it over a hundred years ago! And let's not forget that the greeks also managed to blow up the Parthenon during their war with the turks. Will they demand also that the italians return any remaining greek statue stolen from there by the romans?

It already has started. A couple of years ago Egypt had several mummies returned to it. Not all from the British Museam but I believe there was at least one. I'm gonna go and find the link

Disregard this post. Mind sputter.

Wrong. The Parthenon was blown up during the ottoman and venetian war. You can only blame the turks, who out of their huge respect for culture, were using the Parthenon as a gunpowder storage place..

Making a poll with an option that involves Greece getting a good stuff is a poll in which my vote is predetermined.

Britain doesn't need to be a prick about this. The marbles are a cultural treasure of Greece. However, Britain did saved the marbles from destruction and further deterioration. Greece should be returned the marbles but must pay some sort of baby-sitting fee for it.

Kind of like how Yale is hoarding Inca artifacts, I wouldn't mind the London museum giving back a few of its pieces.

[13:19] <VRwork> Is it hot AND humid in Greece?
[13:20] <Bill3000> probably
[13:20] <VRwork> Then the marble should stay in the UK

Why make people go where it is hot and humid? :(

People made saunas just to be in hot and humid places anytime.

Wikipedia on Mediterranean climate said:
The climate is characterized by warm to hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters.

It may be hot and humid there, but not at the same time ;)

Sorry, I confused that one with the later independence war. I was only about two centuries off...

I find a sorts of compensation for things that happened long ago pretty silly, unless it involves the Germans having to apologize. Next thing you know, Indonesia is going to claim Dutch works of art paid for by the VOC.

Are we arguing that the contents of all museums should be returned to their country of origin?
or only the marbles?

Only the marbles, not sure why they are so important

They are heck of a lot more important than you are.

Well I was talking in relation to other historical artifacts, but this a rather strange fork in the road you want to go down.
