Not being indigenous to this country, I've found myself a member of most of them at varying points in my life. And that's the thing - social mobility is an option for me and others in the south. The only mobility you guys have is deciding which sweatshop to send your 5 year old son to next.

And thats the thing about the South, too much emphasis is placed on Class, I have noticed from living up here and down there that people care less about your background up here than they do in Cambridgeshire.

Incidentally, all the promotional shots and trailers centred around venues in London. Why? Well they didn't want to chase the potential audience away with wide shots of Cumbria (which would most likely contain ex-coal miners in the background pissing in the lakes).

Many places. It's a long story. I am of South Indian origin, grew up in Zambia, with some time in the States. Plenty of visits all the time to India and the States. But I've mostly grown up in England (last 3/4s of my life) in the SOUTH OF ENGLAND to be precise.

As some of you may have noticed from the odd interchange between myself and Rambuchan, there is, in England, something of a North / South divide.

Not only are Northerners and Southerners loathe to admit that they are part of the same country, but there are also demographic differences in House Prices, Crime Rates, Average Salaries, amount of alcohol which can be consumed before being completely comatose, ect.

It has caused me to wonder if there are similiar differences in other countries and, if there is, is it always a North / South divide or is it one of East v West?

The United States has quite a bit of divide, into several regions. In the most basic divide, those whom live in moderate to major cities are apt to be more left-wing with obvious mark-ups in crime rate and certain other social ills, while also maintaining higher pay, property values, etc.

Those residing in small towns and rural areas are more apt to be moderate and conservative. Crime, aside from domestic violence and drug/alcohol-related crime is low. Property values and pay is low.

The socio-political ideology is clearing marked along that particular line, but it can still vary from one extreme to another. Typically, we have our most extremist elements living in the big cities; the Socialists/Communists and the Corporate Fat Cats. They run the show and the rest of us have to take it in the (you know what).

Yorkshire is like a giant timemachine. Travel past the Roses on the M62 and you are immediately transported to 1949.

Sure. In France South used the Oc language and the North the Oil language. La langue d'Oil is the base of the current french and the origin of many english words (some linguists say 80% of the words btw).
Southern french have a very significant accent (-> Thus Northern french too ).
We often draw a separation with the Loire river (when we separate the country oursevles of course, not when Germany does it for us ).
This separation is very easy to identify during weather forecasts, France is a small country but it stands right on climate border .
Italy has a big North South division too. Well, a lot of countries ;-)
