The "OMG! Look what happened in DoC!" Thread

If you catch a stack capturing the city, can you check what unit AI they are running? A save of such a stack before conquering the city might also be useful to me.

I already made some changes intended to suppress the AI from going after minor cities that are not on their war map, but so far it does not seem to have hit the root cause.

We're all asking.

It's often a lone unit, usually a Lancer as in this case, that takes a swipe at an easy target. Role is UNIT_AI_ATTACK and this is usually the type of unit seen wandering the Russian expanses alongside explorers.

I've been trying to figure out how to enable Auto-Saving during Autoplay but am coming up empty. Alas I have no earlier turn save to offer here.

I have seen AI logic that makes UNITAI_ATTACK units go out to explore sometimes. I wonder if I should curb that behaviour entirely. It certainly makes sense for the base game where you have to send some kind of units out to explore, in the absence of scouting units. But in DoC thorough exploration is probably bad for immersion generally.

The opportunistic conquest hypothesis makes sense. I previously only changed the AI logic to stop it from deliberately targeting cities outside of its conquest area. Perhaps I also need to look at this type of opportunistic logic as well.

I'd venture the frequency is greater than sometimes. It's looked like default behavior to me for as far back as I can recall and as I'm sure others will attest. Aside from the traditional Kiev snipe and similar cases, outcomes are largely inconsequential except in cases of sudden war wherein the two or three wandering Lancers could mean the balance. Also yeah the Siberian Olympics don't help the immersion thingy either.

I wonder if I should curb that behaviour entirely.

I suspect the latent tendency is stronger than we witness. Presently the behavior is mainly only seen across northern Eurasia in which few barriers to movement exist. While playing around with AI Portugal's units to see how they captured and used slaves, an unexpected consequence saw Bandeirantes sniping the handful of pop-up Native cities all across Africa (they didn't approach Hesperides for some reason tho 🤣).

Yeah, after taking a quick glance at the code I have a suspect for the city sniping. Still, it would be nice to see an example save so I can confirm.

This was actually very funny 🤣. Unlike us, poor AI doesn't have the luxury of the reloading. But we all know sometimes we want to get lucky despite overwhelming odds!

Lots of folks are mad with this dude, I wonder why... Aww, the famous Civ1 phrase, immortalized by nuclear Gandhi :nuke:!

Oh my god. Orthodox Mexico.

Where are secular states?!?
There is a troubling situation, in general, with civic choices. Most leaders disregard their favorite civic, which bothers me a lot :twitch:. There is notable lack of civic selection diversity in the world. Totalitarianism preferred across the board. And yes, for the human player the best way to avoid any religious animus is to run your folk (pagan) religion! Everybody loves China now.
