The Power of Symbols - The (Nazi) Swastika

What is really surprising is that the Jewish swastika is just a normal swastika with 3 dots at the end of each arm, while the Hindu one is a swastika within a Star of David? Are you sure those two didn't get switched somehow? (Actually, now that I think of it, isn't the combination of the swastika and Star of David the symbol of Raelism?)

It's the things like this that make me believe there is a God.

And he's quite a cosmic comedian. His irony knows no bounds.

I associate the swastika with the vector field -yî+xĵ.

Nah things like this make me believe that people are predisposed to simple symmetric designs, and that these designs are repeated endlessly are the reason.

Exactly. Take a pen & paper, and doodle for a few minutes. I dare anyone not to 'accidentally' draw a swastika.

unfortunately the Nazis used an ancient symbol representing the 4 corners of the world, compass or cardinal points, etc... People have used similar symbols for eons, so that could be a factor in how the human psyche sees it. But obviously the symbol is now a representation of evil for many people, I imagine that'll change with time and we'll be back to using the symbol for its celestial and terrestrial purposes.

:( should have read pg 2, thx Cheetah

I couldn't, but then my drawing skills are pretty much non-existant. When I try to draw a triange I get a mutant circle, when I try to draw a circle I get a mutant pentagon, and when I draw a pentagon I get a very sad panda.

The Nazis used the backwards swastika. Usually the one with opposite chirality is that found in religious etc. instances.

Reminds me of Richard Madeley on This Morning.

"I like the London Eye, but I don't like how it turns anti-clockwise".

Caller:

"Well Richard, if you had crossed the river and looked from the other side, you would have noticed it turned clockwise".

So,

EDIT: In other words, chiralityrotation direction depends upon the position of the observer. FAIL.

EDIT2: In other words, maybe you should try standing on the Southern Hemisphere. It's like a different world. The sun goes right to left in the sky, and everything.

You tried to be cute and it backfired ;)

Never mind, it happened to Richard Madeley too.

I cant speak for you, but I always visualize our world from above the solar system, not below - given the proclivity of ancient peoples to see the north pole as "the top" of the world, I'd say they mostly see it the same way.

EDIT: In other words, chiralityrotation direction depends upon the position of the observer. FAIL.

And we're commonly treated to the perspective of someone above the solar system, from ancient mythology to modern simulations of our solar system.

The Sun goes right to left and I'm in the N hemispehere

You tried to be cute and it backfired

I know the solar system spins clockwise if you're below it, most people live in the northern hemisphere and for people facing north it appears counterclockwise regardless of hemisphere.

Except those who don't.

No-one agrees

So your "coincidence..." is frankly, bollocks.

but they didn't design the symbols or write the myths... So what was your point?

sorry, that was sloppy :)

I'm also available for children's parties. Have a nice day ;)
