I've never been keen on paramilitary religious organisations. ;) Anglican Jihad, eh ?

A good friend gave up the exciting heady whirl of IT project management at our place to go and train to run a Sally Army mission. They certainly do some good work, but I find the religious message that goes with it overbearing - they seem to see food and clothing as a need on an equal footing with spiritual salvation. This probably seems reasonable to Christians, but, as an atheist, I'd much rather all my money went towards the food, housing and clothing part of the equation (so I give to Shelter instead).

Knock Knock. You may not have noticed but the Salvation Army is
still about, and has in fact outlasted the now extinct Red Army.

Yeah, but did the Salvation Army have to contend with the arms race?

No, which only proves that they are smarter than everyone else.

The Salvation army dealt with the armed race by opting out of it,
and like Ghandi, they do well.

Not sure that the Red Army ever had an ideological attack
comparable with that of our dear Kurt Sibling.

The Kiss Army could take them all down in a weekend.

Does anyone else think that "Salvation Army" sounds too much like the Lord's Resistance Army and other related fringe militant groups?

This seems apt...

Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus going on before.
Christ, the royal Master, leads against the foe;
Forward into battle see His banners go!

Refrain

Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus going on before.

At the sign of triumph Satan’s host doth flee;
On then, Christian soldiers, on to victory!
Hell’s foundations quiver at the shout of praise;
Brothers lift your voices, loud your anthems raise.

Refrain

Like a mighty army moves the church of God;
Brothers, we are treading where the saints have trod.
We are not divided, all one body we,
One in hope and doctrine, one in charity.

Refrain

What the saints established that I hold for true.
What the saints believèd, that I believe too.
Long as earth endureth, men the faith will hold,
Kingdoms, nations, empires, in destruction rolled.

Refrain

Crowns and thrones may perish, kingdoms rise and wane,
But the church of Jesus constant will remain.
Gates of hell can never gainst that church prevail;
We have Christ’s own promise, and that cannot fail.

Refrain

Onward then, ye people, join our happy throng,
Blend with ours your voices in the triumph song.
Glory, laud and honor unto Christ the King,
This through countless ages men and angels sing.

Refrain

Mmm, for the record my comment entails on how generally, it doesn't seem to be church members working the shops at the very least, as I've drank and smoked with members and I'm quite sure it's forbidden

Don't worry about names - the fascist political group that ruled Romania a bit was called "The Legion of the Archangel Michael" - and ...the things they've done did not exactly made them worthy of that name...
Sorry for the little OT. But i wanted to point out that the names are not that important - it's what they do that matters most.

P.S. The Salvation Army is a cool name. :)
