The Ultimate Map Thread

Hey guys, I'm working on a map for a NES I'm working on.. things seem to be going pretty good, but what should I do about climate zones? Is it really that nescessary?

EDIT: A little about my map; it's a fantasy/fake map, so it really is whatever I want it to be. Doesn't really have to scientifically make sense, but it seems fun to play on. I would include pictures, however, part of my NES is going to have to do with exploration, and I wouldn't want to give my plans away :P

Well, depends on the scale you're making -- you could have a map be entirely of one climate zone if you so chose (if it wasn't the entire world, for example). If you want it to have any kind of feel of realism, you should take climates into account somehow.

Well, it's more or less one giant continent; with various islands in tropical areas. A majority of the map would be.. European style wether/climate zone.. whatever that is.

Gameplay wise, I would take that sort of thing into account, i.e. sending ships into frozen waters may cause the ship to sink, but is a climate map something players really look for?

It helps with description. "And in the lands of Gorathia, where the salt winds sweep over the vast pines of the low, rugged hills, the dwarven army met its doom among the scattered stone pillars."

It would also be useful for the players to know where they could send those ships, in that example. They would want to know that those waters are icy, before sending their navy to its doom. I think a simple climate map would be a good addition, if you didn't want to get complicated with it. Check out some of the various fresh start NESes on the board for some examples of basic climate maps. Even just having generic terrain/climate relations ("grasslands" and "forests" and "highlands" and so forth) would be useful.

A DUNE NES? I love you a little bit. I'll try to make a desert world map, if not, maybe I'll request the cartographer's guild folks.

Hi, any news about the possibility for a map?
I'm still not loosing hope, but eager to stard working on a in-depth NES.

I asked the cartographer's guild, and nobody ever replied. In fact, I can't even find the thread where I asked them. They must be tired of me already. Sorry that I couldn't do it myself, I'm just a GIMP noob. :(

Same here,
so i guess i will wait for a map, or a new idea.

I'll be attempting a map, but it will suck!

Just don't abandon that idea. I know there are folks who can do it, and I'll keep trying, but the problem is figuring out who can do it.

Well if you can bear to wait till February I can have a desert map ready when I get back to school.

I don't know about The Loser, but I can wait as long as he can. A DuneNES would make my life complete.

Is it actually going to be set on Arrakis? If so, there are maps for that readily available on the Internet. If it's just a desert planet, themed like Dune but taking place in another setting, then I can understand the need for a unique map.

Spoiler :

That's a pretty good map of the Arrakis polar regions. The rest of the planet is pretty much just dunes and dunes and dunes. This pic needs a little cleaning up though.

EDIT:
This image is in special relation to the 'uninhabited' regions of the map. Very serious business.

Hehehehe,
Especially the second picture is priceless!

Edit:

The NES setting would be a Pre-book NES (100-50 years or so)
This would leave me the chance to have a desert-map, with some adjustments or a real Arrakis map, if that's possible...

Count me in! Need any help on the map? I cant work with layers, but I think I have a collection of sprites that might help.

I have no experience with maps, so need all the help i can get.

If you host a development thread and send me your MSN we can start straight away on the production. My first NES on this forum was Dune-themed and I'd love to see one game run and run well ;)

I think i'll be ready for a development thread next week.
