The very many questions-not-worth-their-own-thread question thread XXIII

'Paganism' is an umbrella term which is almost always used historically to refer to non-Abrahamic 'folk religions'. Wicca, as a product of the 20th century, does not truly fit that description, although it is sometimes described as such, thanks in part to the old-fashioned trend for describing unorthodox or sacreligious practices as 'pagan'.

The term Pagan comes from the Latin Pagani, meaning "the village people" or old fashioned country folk. The term came to describe heathens at a time when Christianity had become very popular in more cultured urban areas but not yet widespread in rural environments. Before that it would describe uncouth redneck types without regard to religious practices.

Wicca is a religion that brands itself as a return to the wisdom of ancient heathens, but in reality its beliefs and practices are almost all very recent innovations with no foundation in pre-christian times.

Hi, I'm trying to find out the name of a certain toy I used to own as a kid, they were a bit like mousetraps, you used to push the tongue and it snapped back onto your finger. Here is a drawing I made in Paint for visual aide:

Question computer nerds and I bet this one has you stumped. Why would my i pad specifically hate the acoustic/folk thread in A and E such that whenever I try to post it gets half way through loading the page, has a little tantrum, crashes and goes back to my home screen (not CFC home screen, the pad's)?

Figured I'd bump my own question, it's driving me nuts (if "computer nerds" offended let me stress, I'm just a non-computer nerd).

And I'll throw in another. What's DYOS actually about? I just don't get it. And what's the consul? I see awesome pictures but I just don't get it.

Bad you tube tags? The flash/ HTML 5 thing? Bugged the hell out of me when android followed ipad in killing flash, but at least all we get is blank boxes.

I'll cover this one.

Basically, it's a "comic jam" dating way back from 2003 where people get together to "draw" a collaborative comic (or in many cases cut-and-paste screenshots and pictures from the internet together). The idea was one person would post a comic, the next person would post a following comic, and then a third person, and so on.

Initially it was mostly poking fun at CFC and particular posters. It quickly took on a space opera feel due to contributors (mostly CivGeneral) using private armies and space fleets in their comics. Later each thread had a basic plot that was supposed to drive the story, for example, an absurd quest (DYOS 5 and 6), strange events happening on the forums (DYOS 4, 7 and 8), a rebellion by old avatars (DYOS 10), and a hacker running amok (DYOS 11).

The Consul (intentionally misspelled from "Council") is a result of the contributor consensus after DYOS 9 that there needs to be a place to discuss ideas, resolve disputes, and so on. Basically a place to chat and, if needed be, deal with trollish/uncooperative behaviour.

The current thread (DYOS 11) is a bit messy but it is wrapping up and a new one will start soon that should be more accessible to newcomers. And we welcome new contributors. All you need to get started is MSPaint.

There's also a spin-off thing (DYOS 10.5, or "Plans Within Plans") which is a continuation of DYOS 10; it exists mainly as an experiment to write/draw a more "serious" story as opposed to the more playful/chaotic banter of mainstream DYOS.

All the images are not all your own work? Many are copied from the web? But edited to make them fit the story and take on their own meaning?

Some are cut-and-paste comics (ie comics made from collection of pictures found on the internet); they are however quite rare among the recent contributions. CivGeneral, choxorn, and Stylesrj use models and screenshots from games. Thorvald, Kan' Sharuminar and I mostly draw our own work. e350tb's comics are a mix of the two.

So I found a good deal on CKII, but it's from the UK, and I'm an American. Do PCs have region-locking the same way consoles do? Will there be a lot of extraneous vowels interfering with gameplay?

I don't know what Steam does with region-locking, but sadly, games companies don't produce British English versions of games unless they're already British. If they're done by pesky Europeans, it's anyone's guess.

Or "Colour".

That's because nobody outside of the UK wants to hear "aluminium" :D

Dude, virtually everybody outside the US and Canada calls it aluminium or something reasonably close (but always with a second i).

Spanish, Italian, Russian, German, Danish, Swedish, Japanese, Korean, Swahili, Turkish, Arabic, Thai, Malay, Javanese, Hungarian, you name it*.

Some don't use a word based on the Latin root (e.g. in Hindi, Vietnamese).
But you North American Exceptotrons are the only weirdos (save for the Icelanders) who use a word based on the latin root but drop the second "i".

Just give it a rest.

*Even Polish. Checkmate.

Dude, virtually everybody outside the US ...

Whoa nelly, stop right there. Before I even consider the rest of your comment, I demand proof of existence of this "outside the US" thing you're talking about!!

Many would accept Obama as such proof.
