How long is "safe" to leave between 2 flights? Is there a web site where you can find out what percentage of flights (by operator or route) are later than X?

I can only get to LHR 2 hours 40 mins before the rest of my workmates are flying. I could take a later flight, do my own ground transport the other end and miss the drinks reception that night, or I could get the same flight as them and potentially pay out of my own pocket if my inbound flight is late. It is not possible to get them on the same ticket.

Why is buying based on brand okay with, for example, home improvement tools but not electronics?

It's the same as everything really so I'm not sure why you would bring this up as contrary rather than supporting to my point. ;) There are brands and they are different. Going to buy a set of sockets/wrenches? Some brands are crap, I probably wouldn't buy those. Some are really amazingly good, but unless you are buying the chest at the maintenance bay and filling it out with the tools of your trade it makes no sense to actually pay that upcharge if you aren't a mechanic. If my brother-in-law got a bug up his rear some weekend and wanted to change his oil himself, then went out and bought a set of Snap-On tools to do it, then that's just silly. Craftsman will do him just fine.

That's right. Alcohol is a good substitute when "hand washing is unavailable or impractical". As it says on the bottle.

Not quite as effective as but significantly less stinky than using gasoline.

Will you have to collect / check-in luggage between flights and will you have to change terminals?

2:40 should be ok - what time of the day / day of the week will you be travelling?
*It has been a while since I used Heathrow - don't base this on my advice*

Cleaning one's hands with gasoline is definitely not a good idea. I think.

edit:

Inhalation: Can irritate the nose and throat. Can harm the nervous system. Symptoms may include headache, nausea, dizziness, drowsiness and confusion. A severe exposure can cause unconsciousness.
Skin Contact: May cause mild irritation. Repeated or prolonged exposure can irritate the skin. Not expected to be absorbed through the skin. Any skin contact will also involve significant inhalation exposure.
Eye Contact: Not irritating.
Ingestion: Can irritate the mouth, throat and stomach. Can cause effects as described for inhalation. Aspiration hazard. May be drawn into the lungs if swallowed or vomited, causing severe lung damage. Death can result.
Effects of Long-Term (Chronic) Exposure: Can cause dry, red, cracked skin (dermatitis) following skin contact. Gasoline is a complex mixture containing as many as 250 separate hydrocarbons including several with well-established toxicity (e.g. benzene, toluene, xylenes, and n-hexane). However, there is little information available regarding the potential effects from long-term occupational exposure to gasoline itself. Most of the information available relates to neurotoxic effects from intentional long-term abuse or "sniffing" of gasoline. These extreme exposures are not relevant to occupational exposures. Effects on the blood, which have been seen in some studies, are most likely from the presence of benzene or lead in the gasoline.

Still, not as harmful as I thought. Not irritating to the eyes!?

I knew of a man who got banned from petrol station forecourts after getting addicted to sniffing the stuff from the pumps.

Gasoline has to rank even higher than ether on the list of things not to huff or it'll kill off sections of your brain. Though propane is up there too and people do that. At a certain point I do just look at people and say "wouldn't becoming an alcoholic be more healthy?" But then, significantly more expensive than huffing other people's gas pumps and propane grills if you don't have any cash I suppose.

As for a hand cleaner it's not super terrible actually. It'll cut horrifyingly greasy hands down clean in no time flat. Really handy for "I'm so dirty I don't want to go in the house" level grease. Get most of that off, air evaporate the fumes for about 30 seconds, then go in and shower or finish cleaning.

I would do hand baggage only for this, just in case. This will be Sunday afternoon.

Is it the same terminal, and are you changing from international to international, or international to domestic, or domestic to international, or domestic to domestic? A mere transfer within the same terminal without immigration can be done within an hour, so almost three is plenty. Also, the shorter the flight you're getting in, the less likely it is to be delayed by almost three hours.

On Star Trek computer systems, how would one have the computer record a message that says, "Computer, stop recording." ????

Easy - "Computer, ignore the following command!"

or maybe there's some escape keywords "backslash computer, stop recording" ;)

What's a good source of protein, can be thrown on a sandwich with minimal preparation, tastes good, and isn't chicken? (I already eat enough chicken)

some dairy products and eggs?

I'd recommend eggs too. Cheese perhaps, but it's high in fat too. Not sure about peanut butter.

maybe some soy-based stuff too

Appart from the vegetarian sugestions already, just about any animal we eat is available sliced, so ham, beef, turkey, smoked samon, tuna mixed with mayonaise, prawns mixed with mayonasse, sausages (sliced by you, if that is not too much preparation), bacon, etc.

Fish paste.

(Do you know, I haven't tried that in a very long time.)

Is frequent screaming and explosive temper tantrums a symptom associated with a child on the autism spectrum. I'm not talking everyday children tantrums, mind you. I'm talking really extreme, loud and frequent outbursts.
