Why the Czechs gave up one architecturally challenge style for another?

There used to be empty space and for years discussion went on about what to build there. It's in the middle of the historic city center, so everybody expected something that would actually fit - and then they built this.

I thought I would destroy it with a car bomb...

Those buildings are actually not all that indecent, at least not compared to some of the obscene concrete high-rises in communist Estonia which my mother photographed when she visisted the place in the 80s. They could use a little color, but otherwise they're not that bad from this perspective at least.
