TIL: Today I Learned

I can't always tell which three letters are the root, though. Like, at all. If I stick with Arabic through next semester, hopefully I'll learn.

Just look for the starting consonant in each syllable?

This is a common feature across many Semitic languages, including Arabic, Hebrew, Aramaic, Akkadian, and others. It is called a triconsonantal root. See this wikipedia article here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semitic_root

Of course I presume in reality things aren't as always clear cut, but there you go.

Neat, so it's not just Arabic. Thanks for the info. :goodjob:

I like Semitic roots.

Arab girls are hot.

What about Arab guys? D:

My gay cousin is totally into hot Middle Eastern guys.

Neat, so it's not just Arabic. Thanks for the info. :goodjob:

Yup. Semitic languages also have biconsonantal roots and occasionally even quadcnosontantal roots (not sure what the exact term is) and even I think a few with 5 consonant roots.

Also in some other non-Semitic Afro-Asiatic languages there are bilateral consonants, but the triconsonantal root thing is generally unique to Semitic languages onyl.

Maybe I should race Joan to Melbourne then. I'm as skinny as they come. :groucho:

Guess I'm too chunky now but a few years back I'd be in with a chance too as I was pretty damn skinny.

That, of course, unless a kangaroo punches you to death. As it is a common occurrence in Australia. Kangaroos, wearing boxing gloves, and then punching tourists to death.

The prize will be the crippling realization you need to pay for a ticket back at some point!

A ticket back? Good luck getting into Australia without proving that you're not planning to stay!

No, in his end... oh!

Or, you know, leave DNA behind.

Missed this comment before and the show more or less said DNA is the only truly scientific way to solve a crime. All the other types of forensic science like polygraphs, fingerprint matching, and hair sample matching are completely unfounded scientifically and more often than not identify the wrong suspect for a crime.

And to go back to the fingerprint thing: The show actually cited a case where the cops got a fingerprint match and convicted a guy of murder, even though he was not even in the same country as the victim at the time of the murder. But because they (and the courts) believed in the total junk pseudo-science of fingerprint matching, an obviously innocent man was sent to prison.

Hell, fingerprint matching isn't even done by computers like they show in all those crime shows. Preliminary matching is done by a computer, but the final decision is made by a human. The show mentioned some study that showed the humans responsible for fingerprint matching got it wrong approximately 90% of the time. Yet fingerprint matching is somehow still admissible in court.

TIL that Canada's new PM starred in American Psycho :)

Who wouldn't want a PM who could check those doubles?

Probably people who get into jail just for a meal and shelter. Criminalizing despondency, this should not be surprise.

It's ‘democracy’, man.

@SS-18 ICBM: did you even read the article? It's about people who are jailed and, not counting court/lawyer fees and damages resulting from their misdeeds, are charged $50 a day plus a $100 booking fee. For every month in jail you pay $1,500, one year is $18,000. Wooo.
