TIL: Today I Learned

TIL Ali Abunimah believes the struggle in Israel to get Haredim in the army is a product of Zionist anti-Semitism, since the anti-Zionist Haredim are practicing 'real Judaism.' He lumps it in with Israeli racism towards Arabs and Africans. A disgusting man.

TIL one of Charlie Sheen's exes is a former pornstar.

Well, he's definitely screwed big time.

I imagine because he probably didn't treat her like "one of the hottest actresses at the time"

TIL that Mark Zuckerberg is a Civilization fan:

A few days later, when I meet with Zuckerberg for our first conversation, he’s eager to talk about Oculus Ping-Pong even before I begin asking him questions. As he delineates the pleasures that user-adjustable physics bring to table tennis, his expression takes on some of the same goofy glee I’d experienced. (Zuckerberg, a gamer himself, is a devotee of Civilization, a venerable game series that Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe worked on in a previous life. The goal of the original 1991 version of Civ—"build an empire to stand the test of time"—neatly encapsulates its appeal to the Zuckerbergian brain.)

A member of CFC perhaps? Wouldn't be overly surprising; CFC does predate Facebook, after all. Though of course, it probably would make sense for him to keep his alias here if that were in fact the case.

Regardless, my opinion of him has increased - being a fan of Civilization is nearly always a redeeming quality.

TIL as well, from the same article, that as of Q2 2015, 58% of U.S. and Canadian residents count as monthly Facebook users. Quite a change from when I joined and there were, IIRC, about 10 million users worldwide. Ah, those were the days for social networks. Oddly enough, though I was in the first 3%, I'm no longer in that 58% since I only check Facebook every few months. It was just so much cooler when it was all college and high school students.

I remember when I was considered a late adopter by all my friends in the seventh grade.

That would have been eight years ago!

I liked social networks that you could escape to, not feel the need to escape from.

Maybe that's part of the appeal of this forum.

I joined facebook the summer after 11th grade, only because my brother, four years younger, just joined and I realized I was really behind. Facebook is depressing in a way but it is a necessary evil - I would've lost contact with so many awesome people if I didn't have it.

Facebook is just very practical to use for event posting, so in the world of books it is vastly useful.
Likewise for other art events.

Although it is going to be a huge problem if it evaporates in the future, or charges for stuff it doesn't charge for now. (it already charges for promoting a page, btw).
