Any government is only as good as the people ruling it. A benevolent authoritarian is great since they can act without a pesky Parliament getting in the way. Conversely a democracy that votes for self-annihilation seems counterproductive.

Probably, because what would be the alternative?

A dictatorship lead by Supreme Leader Lexicus?

I don't agree. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Authoritarian leaders inevitably abuse their authority.

Honestly I'd be down to try it out but only because it would really piss off certain CFC posters and that would be funny

Interesting analysis. Good that such a critical question is raised !
I am reading pieces of that WVS report of 2010-2014, more than 800 pages. What a treasure chest !
Never saw WVS reports before :) A lot better in transparent details than the global Geert Hofstede reports.
Also staring in a kind of disbelief (for now) at the values shown for the Netherlands in that NYT article.

As centrists look at the extremists on both sides they most likely see less benefit to "the people's rule" than anyone else, since so many people are dangerous. Extremists almost always convince themselves that since their way is "obviously best" that eventually the people will "come around," so they would tend to support democracy more.
I am inclined to the same
Also
If democracy can also mean that substantial changes could happen with a 50% + 1 vote every 4 years, people that are reasonable happy with how things are, see, I also think, a risk of extremes from democracy changing too much.
For now I think that the old meaning of the word conservative could apply very well.
Not conservative in the meaning of left-right, but conservative in the meaning of preferring slow and moderate change to avoid risks and hence-forth trara.
Could also be very well linked to personal life attitudes of preferring a steady moderate opinion on matters above strong personal opinions. Linked to youth <-> adults. Evolving more sharp opinions <-> more mature "proven" opinions.
If you are roundabout where you want to be.... what good can come from too much politics.... a world where stretching & twisting the truth is too normal and too far away from family and personal values (also part of the questions of the WVS report).

Anyway... first I am going to dig in for a while in the several reports

Perhaps. But again, this is a "western truth." It is possible that a more "collectivist" culture might produce leaders who would consider the good of the collective to a greater degree than we think is likely.

Not sure I should respond....ah what the hell.

This is ironic given that one of the main drivers of conservative/Republican voters is to piss of liberal/Democratic voters.

 It's like the Urban Dictionary of CFC: OT.

More like Encyclopedia Dramatica after it went from "kind of funny at times" to "just mean spirited GARBAGE TRASH".
I'm still a bit annoyed there's nothing about me after 12 years on this site. What am I doing with my life ?

[no endorsement - i just happen to like undue overgeneralisation less]

Except in...
...Sweden, Germany, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands...
...Austria looks suspicious, like that's new.

Oh, right, i see the Anglosphere now.
Wow, that UK graph looks nasty.

It's allmost like in the Anglosphere political culture was broken and moderates there - particularly on the left - had completely lost the plot.

Yeah, it's totally not like anybody ever claimed that on this board. :mischief:

[/no endorsement]

German centrists are awful.
They're the kind of people who either don't care about anything until the smell from that camp that nobody noticed until now becomes too strong, are concerned about inequality and "social cohesion" and still vote for parties that make everything worse, and/or have nothing against foreigners as long as there's not too many of them in their street or their child's school.

John Adams wrote this.

Such as China or Japan, perhaps?
