TIL: Today I Learned

Yup, our doctors still use this as well. The rational they use is that it allegedly a more secure system even though the evidence doesn't back this up in any meaningful way. I think the real reason is no one is forcing them to modernize or to use their absurd prices to improve service instead of just padding shareholder pockets.

I've mostly heard the privacy/security issues. Considering that Canadian hospitals keep having trouble with ransomware, it might take a while to fully modernize.

Where the privacy and security argument falls apart is that when you send a fax, you have no way to guarantee the intended person is the one who picks it out of the machine, or that they pick it out of the machine at all. There's also no way to recall a fax sent to a wrong number, though that largely holds true for email and is probably less common for faxes versus emails.

Today I learned that Woody Harrelson's father was a contract killer who murdered a federal judge as part of a killing for hire, and at one point to be involved in the killing of JFK.

Yes, how come you hadn't heard of that before? :)
I have no strong views on W.H. as an actor. Sometimes he is good, imo, but I am not particularly fond of any of his work. Maybe he was good in 'No country for old men' because it happens to everyone sailing to Byzantium his role was brief and toned down.

Watch Transsiberian, Mr. K.

Today I learned that in the state of California, all amusement parks are required to report any accident in which EMS is contacted. By contrast in Florida, any amusement park which employs more than 1000 people is exempt from any accident reporting.

I wonder which state is run by Republicans.

TIL 73% of the garbage in the Atlantic Ocean comes from Chinese merchant shipping.
https://principia-scientific.org/study-chinese-cargo-ships-dump-73-of-trash-in-atlantic-ocean/

Reported more popularly here:
https://nationalpost.com/news/world...arbage-floating-in-atlantic-ocean-study-finds
Chinese merchant ships might be the leading cause of the plastic garbage accumulating in the the Atlantic ocean, according to a study published this week.

Hah, take that plastic straw ban meanies.

That is highly possible given how Chinese vessels already trespass other countries' waters to engage in depredatory fishing and the country simply makes up statistics claiming that they are not using CFCs anymore. (fake edit: I see you've added a new link)

From the link I posted, today I learned that there are ecosystems that evolved to live in human-made plastic environments.

Well, if there's microbia that ‘eat’ plastic then the little buggers are highly adaptable. Hence why environmentalism isn't so much as saving nature because of itself (it will always bounce back unless you shove the planet into the sun) but because it is our habitat, in ecological terms.

One Corporation to Pollute Them All - Luxury cruise air emissions in Europe,
European Federation for Transport and Environment, June 2019

The main purpose of this study is to analyse air pollution caused by luxury passenger cruise ships in European waters. The results show that the luxury cruise brands owned by Carnival Corporation & PLC emitted in 2017 in European seas alone 10 times more disease-causing sulphur oxide than all of Europe’s 260+ million passenger vehicles.
https://www.transportenvironment.or...e Corporation to Pollute Them All_English.pdf

Carnival Corporation & plc is a British-American cruise operator, currently the world's largest travel leisure company, with a combined fleet of over 100 vessels across 10 cruise line brands.
Not Chinese, so A-ok. :)

TIL that there have been Ice Age on Mars too. Will have to learn about details another day but "what if" Solar System went through some kind of interstellar dust cloud that made all planets to cool down a little bit (so Mars and Earth both had Ice Age at same time...) Oh boy, oh boy, my curiosity about new things will never get old... even if new things will prove old things wrong :D

I've known about it for a while, but today I re-discovered the AlphaSmart, a battery-powered word processor from the 1990s/2000s.

I kind of want one.

Are they bad?
