Philly FOP President Condemns Courier Times to Bankruptcy, Eternal Damnation

On December 7th, the Bucks County Courier Times ran a syndicated political cartoon from Chris Britt. In that cartoon, minority children waiting for Santa ask him, “Keep us safe from the police.” It’s a reference to the several killings of unarmed black men by police officers this year, including the death of 12-year-old Tamir Rice in Cleveland.

As a reaction, Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police [national police union - TF] President John McNesby — a man who may wish to become our next state senator — fired off a letter to the Courier Times and its editor, Patricia Walker.

What to make of this? Are the police over-sensitive to criticism? Is this sort of knee-jerk hostility to their critics going to make it more difficult to establish or re-establish trusting relationships with civilians?

Which one of "keep", "us", "safe", "from", "the", and "police" is supposed to be a "slur"?

I do love the double-layered structure of the thread title, especially considering your stated political affiliations!

Which one of "keep", "us", "safe", "from", "the", and "police" is supposed to be a "slur"?

Well if you took the individual letters from those words and rearranged them, you can come up with at least a couple of obscure slurs in the American experience.

If they can't take a little criticism, and turn to despising the people they're supposed to protect, then can we really expect them to risk their lives for their constituents? Sack the whiners.

Where are the thugs? :trouble:

By the way, do you really think the PHILADELPHIA Fraternal Order of Police is a national police union?

Fraternal Order of Police is a nationwide union. The Philly Fraternal Order of Police is a local section.

The letter isn't from the national union. It's from a local lodge.

As I see things: There are no thugs; there is a single administrator. There is no harassment; there is a single letter of protest. The letter isn't from a national union, but rather from a local branch.

"There is a special place in hell for you media parasites" didn't exactly help his cause. McNesby may want to reconsider his threat to circulate his letter around.

I don't know all of them, though one of them is in the Philippines!

There is certainly a special place in hell for pseudo-masonic police union leaders.

Dante is silent on the subject, and has not risen from the grave to make several corrections on his work. Perhaps we could just substitute with the Pope and the cardinals.

All I see here are people exercising their right to free speech. :goodjob:

Indeed, we all need to call out people once or twice. Perhaps damning them to Hell however and calling them "parasites" might go a bit far, no?

Also hoping they go bankrupt doesn't seem very friendly. Are the police allowed to do that sort of thing?

But I can't help thinking this policeman is doing his cause more harm than good by drawing more attention to the cartoon.

That "we give our lives for you" crap always makes me want to vomit.

Oh, you mean like wishing someone a Happy Christmas? Yup. Could be.

For some reason, I wonder if perhaps the friendly policemen that are in the local branch of the "Fraternal Order of Police" might decide to go one police baton beyond stern letters with sincere wishes of eternal damnation?

In times like these, sometimes speaking out against police abuses is not necessary. The union leader did such a wonderful job putting his police boot in his mouth all on his own.

Obviously the cartoon and the reaction to it by the Fraternal Order of Police can be interpreted in a number of different ways, depending upon who one wants to side with, the police or the "community". I suppose we could even interpret it as some sort of "diversion" from more important issues which devious forces of some nature don't wish us to pay attention to.

In all honesty I hate to try to sit out of a perfectly good muck war but I'm sort of tired of all the muck. I think I'll just become an existentialist or something...ponder the meaning of "being" instead of "who do I side with".
