I don't get the whole feminist thing. What's wrong with just being a humanist? Or a alllifeissacredist or universalist? It seems a needlessly divisive word.

Apparently less than you think.

You think if I say "I'm a vegetarian but I eat fish" or "I don't meat but fish is ok" there's any confusion to be had? Despite Buddhism, vegetarianism in any form is largely alien in Japan, but I've never had any issues. If you just say vegetarian then there are potential problems, and not just where fish is concerned. Japan Airlines always gives me vegan meals if I ask for vegetarian, which is not the end of the world, but at least demonstrates the problem.

When you've been vegetarian (or pescatarian or whatever) for a while you figure out how best to communicate this to avoid such situations. It's this practical concern, not logical or moral consistency that determines what you say when you have to inform somebody what you can and can't eat. For me, this leads me to use one of the above mentioned phrases.

Given the history of gender relations, working towards empowering women is hardly divisive, at least not in the short term. I'd certainly hope that feminists held more inclusive long term aspirations though.

Anyway, we're talking about a "feminist" that wants rape victims to be banned from seeking abortions.

No, I think that clarifies it quite nicely. No meat except fish. It's ridiculous that "vegetarian except fish" has come to be the dominant meaning of "vegetarian". That is what I object to.

I don't see how vegan meals are a problem at all, it makes more sense to minimize the number of different options that need to be stocked, and presuming vegan for vegetarian cuts right around the "but I eat fish" part.

I suppose. I'd always assumed that the problem was that the travel agent was just telling JAL that I was a vegetarian, then JAL not knowing what my exact requirements were and so playing it safe. Like I said, it's not a problem as such.

Eating predators is moral, eating herbivores is morally wrong.

Flexitarian! It means I mostly eat plants and eat meat occasionally. Because I know you guys love those buzz words.

I'm this, but have been eating meat more frequently lately.

Who are you talking about? I never said any such thing, just in case you are refering to me.

When it comes to abortion, it is about the baby's rights needing protection. It's not about the woman, for me. But I can see exceptions.

And, I've done more gender work in Africa than you've done in the US. So, whatever, mr "feminist". My specialization in my PhD (interdisciplinary ecology) is gender. When you get a grad degree specializing in gender, you can start talking crap mr. "feminist". When female professors in the gender studies department refer to you as a feminist, then talk crap. You're excused.

I'm a feminist too, chicks dig that.

in a country where vegetarians are generally assumed to eat fish in many if not most cases.

I just think that calling yourself a vegetarian and eating fish is ********, nothing personal there..

What he's trying to say is that there's a cultural component to labels. In Japan, they refer to meals with or without meat, and it just so happens that fish is included in the 'without meat' category.

It's the way an entire country refers to their meals.

Vegetarian.

Whether or not you're an omnivore, the average American eats far too much processed meat and far too little else in the pyramid. The real questions for everyone, AFAIC, are balance, and organics vs. inorganics.

I eat meat, but generally nothing too crazy red.

I'm also a big dairy consumer. Love me some eggs and milk and cheese and yogurt.

I want to commit to it. But vegetarians are so annoying that I don't.

You don't have any authority to tell anyone else what is and isn't feminism, but thanks for playing. :coffee:

Only a man can know what feminism is :mischief:

it's the same way we know that they are <derogatory term referring to lesbians>, right? they won't put out... it's really easy.

That gets really confusing if you apply it to Ecofarm.
