Chess robot breaks seven-year-old boy's finger during Moscow Open

A robot broke a seven-year-old boy's finger during a chess match in Moscow last week, Russian news outlets report.
"The robot broke the child's finger," Sergey Lazarev, Moscow Chess Federation President, told Tass news agency. "This is of course bad."
A video shared on social media shows the robot taking one of the boy's pieces. The boy then makes his own move, and the robot grabs his finger.
Four adults rush to help the boy, who is eventually freed and ushered away.
Mr Lazarev said the machine had played many previous matches without incident.
The boy was able to finish the final days of the tournament in a cast, Tass reports.

China has made an anti-porn mind reading hat
Researchers in China have come up with a new and elaborate way to detect porn for the purpose of censorship. The helmet-like device can detect spikes in human brainwave patters when the watcher is presented with pornographic imagery.
Porn has been illegal in China since the People's Republic was formed in 1949, so censorship is a pretty big player over there, if you weren't aware already. AI bots have, for some time, been set loose on the web in a bid to detect and flag any indecent imagery found. 'Porn appraisers,' or jian huang shi, the majority of whom are women, are also in position to help catch what the AI misses, but a lot of things still slip through these barriers and filter out to the porn-starved general public.
A device that can detect when a man is watching pornography by “reading his mind” has been developed in China, according to the research team in Beijing behind the project.
The device, which could speed up the work of censors trying to spot indecent images on the Chinese internet, is worn on the head by the subject and can pick up a spike in the brainwaves triggered by explicit content, according to the researchers.
Fifteen male university students aged between 20 and 25 volunteered to wear the item while in front of a computer screen.
Each time a sensitive photo appeared, an alarm went off.
Using the helmet, a jian huang shi only needed to sit in front of a screen, and the device would take over to screen a large number of photos non-stop until the censor blinked.

Psychics and Tarot Readers are complaining OTHER people are scammers

Impersonation is becoming one of the hottest issues in the world of mystical labor, because it’s simply so pervasive; one tarot reader told Motherboard they’ve been impersonated at least 15 times. The scammers typically copy all of their target’s photos and captions, create a new Instagram account that mirrors theirs as much as possible, and then start following and messaging people who follow the target. The impersonators—who often address the follower as “beloved” or “dear”—say they felt irresistibly compelled to reach out, that they need to urgently tell them something from their spirit guides, and offer to give the follower a reading, always for a price.
As the L.A. Times pointed out in November, the issue seems to have gotten worse recently, and often targets spiritual workers who are Black and Latinx. (The Times also pointed out that the scammers often use language that sounds overly stiff—greeting people they’re messaging with the unlikely phrase “Grand Rising,” for instance—or full of Britishisms like “hon” and “love” that don’t make sense from a supposedly American psychic. This seems to suggest that some of the scammers are either from the United Kingdom or places previously colonized by it.)
Tea’s husband quickly revealed that he knew he wasn’t actually talking to Michelle Tea, and the couple quickly began trying to persuade the scammer to come on a podcast that Tea hosts, Your Magic. On a recent episode, “This Fake Witch is Trying to Scam You,” Tea confronted the epidemic of scamming targeting the online psychic community.

How do you tell the difference between a fake and real witch?

Red Deer emergency workers want you to stop shoving your phone into cupholders

Cupholder pushes phone’s side buttons, triggering an automatic 911 call

It's become an all too common occurrence for Red Deer emergency dispatcher Andrea McLean.

She answers a 911 call to hear a confused person on the other line wondering how they dialled the number. Knowingly, she asks, "Was your phone in a cupholder?" They say, "Yes," and she launches into her explanation.

On an iPhone 8 or later, an emergency SOS call can be made by holding down both side buttons at the same time. A new screen appears, and soon, a countdown begins and an alert sounds. If no action is taken, a 911 call is triggered.

McLean says this sequence of events often happens accidentally when iPhones are squeezed into cupholders.

Previous studies reported up to half of 911 (emergency) calls are accidental 'butt/pocket dials'.

Teenage stepdaughter did it a couple times when she first got her phone. It's those lock-screens, and one reason I never use them. There's a button to call for emergency even if the phone is locked....that button inevitably gets pressed when in your pocket.....

RCMP officer disciplined after passing out drunk in Burger King drive-thru

Const. Blaise Picketts, off duty, was found in his police vehicle with open alcohol in Maple Ridge

A former member of the RCMP Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Service has been disciplined after a 2020 incident in Maple Ridge, B.C., in which he was found passed out in his police-issued SUV in a Burger King drive-thru at 2:30 a.m.

Const. Blaise Picketts, whose full name is Jonathan Warren Blaise Picketts, agreed to the facts in an RCMP Conduct Board decision, which was posted this week. He also entered a guilty plea for resisting arrest in the incident, in separate criminal proceedings last year.

The incident took place in April 2020. It began early in the afternoon, on a day Picketts was off duty. He and some other police dog handlers met in Surrey to train their dogs.

Afterwards, the group decided to go to the home of one of the officers in Langley to socialize. On the way, Picketts picked up alcohol at a liquor store, which he drank at the officer's house.

A couple of hours later he went to another officer's house in Surrey, and continued to drink, at one point leaving to drive to the liquor store again, before continuing to drink.

According to the Conduct Board decision, Picketts stayed at that officer's house until 2 a.m., when he left in his police-issued SUV, with his service dog, carbine, ammunition and mobile workstation.

Colliding with a concrete barrier

Picketts admits to scraping the SUV along a concrete barrier on the Golden Ears Bridge while driving to Maple Ridge. The collision caused about $7,000 in damage, for which Picketts later reimbursed the RCMP.

At about 2:30 a.m., the officer fell asleep behind the wheel in a Burger King drive-thru, according to the conduct board decision. An employee tried to wake him up for 20 minutes, before getting scared and calling 911.

At about 3 a.m., an RCMP constable arrived, unsure if he was dealing with an armed police officer or someone who was driving a stolen police vehicle.

According to the disciplinary decision, the constable found Picketts sleeping with the engine running and a credit card in his right hand. It took several attempts to wake him up and an open can of alcohol was found on the floor.

After a second officer arrived at the Burger King, the two tried to administer a breathalyzer test, but Picketts bit the straw, turned away from the device and failed to blow hard enough.

Resisting arrest

He was placed under arrest, but refused to comply, became unco-operative and swore at the officers. According to the Conduct Board decision, Picketts became combative and physically resisted arrest, at one point lifting his knee quickly in the direction of the groin of one of the constables, and grabbing the handcuffs in a way that injured the other officer's thumb.

More officers were urgently called to the Burger King to help, and it took several officers to get him into the back of a police vehicle.

'Put up his middle finger to the camera'

At the Maple Ridge police station, Picketts continued to be unco-operative.

"Booking video shows that when Constable Picketts was being photographed in cells, he put his head down and put up his middle finger to the camera," said the Conduct Board decision.

He was eventually released after sobering up.

Following his guilty plea for resisting arrest, Picketts was sentenced to three months of probation and issued a $1,000 fine.

"I find that his actions demonstrate a serious lack of judgment and are incompatible with the duties and responsibilities of a member of the RCMP," wrote Christine Sakiris to the Conduct Board in her decision. "Members cannot flout, in their private lives, the very laws they are called upon to enforce."

Picketts was allowed to remain a member of the RCMP, but he was docked 30 days pay and 15 days of vacation time for the incident. He was removed from the Integrated Police Dog Services and is ineligible for promotion for three years. He was also ordered to undergo medical treatment and apologize to the arresting officers.

I haven't seen any evidence that Hitler's supporters tended to be stupid. Bigoted, ignorant and/or desperate yes, but many of them were intelligent and educated.
Desperation makes idiots of us all.

"Planned orphanhood". Oh well, as long as they have given consent to it being done if they die.
Very selfish. Go find a new man don't bring your kid up without a dad.

it is a very crowded list of enemies down there . There would be the odd one or two who might it fair enough to die for a kid he would never ever see . Like he can also resign from the Army or ghe Reserves and move out to New York to raise a family , you know .

Man fleeing Wiltshire crash scene attacked by emus

A driver who fled the scene of a crash was attacked by a group of emus after climbing into their field.

A truck hit a shop in the centre of Malmesbury in Wiltshire at lunchtime on Monday.
Chef Dean Wade gave chase when two people left the truck and escaped on foot.
Mr Wade says he then saw the driver being attacked by a group of emus after he climbed into their field.
Wiltshire Police said the driver of the pick-up truck had been arrested on suspicion of failing to stop, dangerous driving and causing actual bodily harm.

A girl on Tik-Tok is trending due to her claim that (ancient) Rome never existed; was made up by the catholic church. I personally would be very fond of her if this is all a calculation (since it is clearly working, she has gained fame/notoriety in next to no time => cash from Tik-Tok videos).
She also says she is "almost 40", so if that is true, nice :)

Some day I will be less lazy, and come up with a series of brief to very brief videos, on how (say) Germany is an experiment on busy beaver turing machines, which is why ocasionally it leads to mass genocide.

Wasn't this back in November/December?

This isn't "weird" news, but I didn't wish to post it in the general politics thread (since it isn't the kind of "political" usually posted there), nor to start a thread on it (nothing much to say on my part).

I agree that Castro (and other famous latin americans) should be played by actors that are latin american or (at worst) iberian. For example, Escobar was played by a Brazilian (and even that, due to his pronunciation of Spanish, was critisized - though I don't speak Spanish and liked him in the role!)
