What do you think about Poland?

Polish Food looks tasty.

Yeah but the Eastern Roman Empire eventually lost its "Latin" character due to influences of Greek culture as well as oriental Sassanid Persia.

That's why the Eastern Roman Empire since more or less the times of Heraclius (610 - 641 A.D.) is often refered to as the Byzantine Empire.

And note that the Western (Latin) Christianity survived (with capital in Rome) the collapse of the Western Roman Empire.

And it was that Christianity (the one with bishops in Rome) that influenced Western Europe - not that from Constantinople.

The Eastern Roman Empire wasn't very "Latin" at any point, but it's inhabitants and neighbors called it the "Roman Empire" during its entire existence.

Christianity survived, because it it's a religion, not a political entity.

And it did influence Western Europe quite a lot; Poland is in Eastern Europe.

It did influence Poland as well.

Christianity (the Catholic Church at least) was always a very well organized religion.

And the Papal State was actually a political entity.

Amusingly enough, the tribe that was the basis for early Kievan Rus was also called "Polanie".

I though they were called "Vikings". Or it was Novgorod? Just joking. :)

BTW - when it comes to that legend about Lech, Czech and Rus:

Some nations always called Poland "Lechistan" and Poles "Lachy" (for example Turks, Cossacks / Ukrainians, etc.).

What do you think about Poland?

The question should be not "what" but "who" do you think about Poland: :)

It wasn't always a very well organized religion; and the "Romans," as well as the Papal States, had next to nothing to do with the spread of Christianity to Poland.

Unless you're going to call the German Holy Roman Emperors "Roman."

Poland accepted Christianity from the Czech Kingdom, not from the Holy Roman Empire.

It was yet before the Czech Kingdom became part of the Holy Roman Empire.

BTW - Western Europe also didn't accept Christianity directly from the Roman Empire.

Barbarian kingdoms in Western Europe were Christianized yet AFTER the fall of the Western Roman Empire...

And that's exactly what I wrote previously.

The Roman Empire in 4th century was first to create the organization of the Catholic Church as we know it.

Of course later there were numerous transformations of this organization, but Theodosius I started everything.

That's not really true, even if you don't want to see those kingdoms as successor states to the Roman Empire. While there still officially was an empire, most of the goths and vandals were probably already (arian, granted) christians, having been in contact with the empire for centuries.

I like the food. The bigos sounds like a stew I ought to try making some time.

What's the most popular sport in Poland? Football, weightlifting, hockey?

Henryk Sienkiewicz; or, What We Talk About When We Talk About Poland:

"We" here having the meaning of "college quizballers".

He's more of a favorite for the "upstart high schoolers" demographic. College quizballers have all moved onto Edward Gierek and Wladyslaw the Elbow-High.

Would that their historyballer counterparts had moved on from Jan III to Władysław IV.

What's the most popular sport in Poland? Football, weightlifting, hockey?

1. Football (soccer)
2. Motorcycle Speedway racing (for some reason we have the world's best/most profitable motorcycle speedway league)

Volleyball, handball, and ski jump are popular too.

edit: Speedway racing might be more popular than football.. I just found out that they get higher attendance #s than football.. interesting..
