Spoiler :
Former US vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin has been criticised for writing crib notes on her hands for her Tea Party speech on Saturday.

Mrs Palin was shown reading from her hand and displaying the scribbled notes after she had made the address.

She had spoken in the speech of a "charismatic guy with a teleprompter", apparently meaning President Obama.

Mrs Palin received a standing ovation for the speech as she called for a "return to conservative principles".

Sarah Palin at Tea Party convention - 6 February 2010
Mrs Palin's left hand displayed several key words

But a photo taken during a question-and-answer session after the speech showed her left hand with the words "energy", "budget cuts", "tax" and "lift Americans' spirits". The word "budget" had been crossed out.

'Cheat sheets'

Also, video footage showed her seemingly reading from her hand when asked what top three things a conservative-led Congress should do.

The footage prompted NBC journalist Andrea Mitchell to say that the "cheat sheets" were damaging in view of her attack on Barack Obama during the speech.

"If [senior Republican] Mitt Romney had notes on his hand, wouldn't we take it pretty seriously?" she said on MSNBC's Daily Rundown show on Monday.

There was controversy at the convention over Mrs Palin's appearance fee, reported to be as much as $100,000, although she said she would not financially benefit from it.

Some activists have also complained about the $500 (£317) registration fee for the Nashville conference.

The year-old Tea Party movement draws together opponents of Mr Obama's healthcare reform, his economic stimulus package and other aspects of his agenda.

So, is it considered elitist to be able to remember this number of headings without suffering meltdown?

And at a fee of $20,000 per item, was she overpaid ?

I think someone who wants to be a leader shouldn't have to write notes on the palm of their hands just to keep a couple of talking points in their heads.

Come on.. Everyone realizes that this lady is slow. No need to make fun of her every 2nd thread.

Maybe a mod should just merge this with the Tea Party thread. The article is relevant to the discussion there.

Man, if they made shooting fish in a barrel an olympic sport, YOU would take GOLD bathsheba666.

It is probably a technique she perfected during her school days.

You do realize she's the American equivalent of Stockwell Day, right? The guy who broke the rules at the Leaders' Debate the year he tried (and failed) to become PM? Remember his cute little sign?

Sheesh, Sarah Palin's behavior in this is what one would expect of a 12-year-old caught cheating on a school test... :shake:

So keeping some last min talking point reminders on your palm is evidence that someone is slow?

Really?

Wow.

No breaks from you guys I guess. But last I checked that was a fairly normal thing to do.

It's pretty terrible form to criticism a guy using a teleprompter while reading notes from your hand.

Pfft, your hand? No. Writing on your hand is far too obvious. I wrote on my leg.

It's a speech from a former Vice Presidential candidate. These people shouldn't need notes (especially on their hands) to remember topics like "budget cuts" or "energy." Furthermore, on her hand? Couldn't she have brought a piece of paper? It's very unprofessional.

This is ridiculous.

Conservative writes 5 words on her hand.
"What an idiot!"

Obama reads entire speeches from a teleprompter.
"Greatest orator of our time!"

A day later she had "Hi mom!" written on her hand, so I think she was just trolling the media. They'll jump on anything to make conservatives look dumb.

Not that I'm saying Sarah is smart or would be a good leader, far from it. The bias is so obvious that it just has to be pointed out.

Last minute talking points?

Tax Cuts, Energy, Lift American Spirit.

Those are new?

Obama getting flak about the teleprompter happens enough its practically a meme. I would say there is some irony there, but I dont think its 'pretty terrible'.

I humbly submit that Joe Biden could use some friggin notes on his hand to keep him from saying something really idiotic.

And like I said, its possible it was a very last minute thing she did and didnt have a 3x5 card handy.

I agree that its not the most 'professional' thing ever....but people are saying its indicative of her being slow or stupid. My point is that this is something normal every day people do, and as such, its simply not proof that she is an idiot.

I agree, but given how much proof we already have that she is an idiot, this is all just gravy.

I don't think I have ever seen anybody walking around with notes on their hands, much less a politician during an engagement. They use paper instead. Now, there are certainly occasions where you might find yourself with a pen and no paper, so you might scribble a phone number or a note on on your hand instead. But other than that, I doubt it happens much, if at all.

Got any evidence whatsoever that this is "something normal every day people do"?

Only anecdotal evidence as I am pretty sure there arent any published studies on it. But its something I see all the time and even do myself every once in awhile when I need to scribble something quick and dont have a piece of paper.

Let me guess. You have never, ever, ever written on your hand before?

Normal, everyday people shouldn't run for President.
Why not? Isn't that one of the things Americans tend to brag about - that they have so much freedom and equality there that anybody could (in theory) run for President?

Of course, whoever does end up running should show a bit of professionalism, which scribbling on one's hand does not. She could have asked somebody for a piece of paper; surely she must still have at least one handler or secretary whose job it is to attend to whatever glitches might come up? Even a gum wrapper would have been better than scribbling on her hand, like a child.
