What is the meaning of life, the universe and pretty much everything that exists?

Does the universe as a whole have any particular goal or purpose? If so, what is that goal or purpose for existing?

Get ready, get set, go!

My own opinion is that the universe has no purpose and that the universe simply exists with no ultimate goal in mind. People themselves can decide what their meaning of life is, if they want to.

Oh, I answered regarding the universe. Life seems to have a different goal: to spread. Once life is around, it seems to do its best to spread wherever it can and wherever it can't.

To stop asking assinine questions with no answers...? :mischief:

Why are people always so fixated on some 'purpose.' Are your lives truly devoid of that much pleasure and enjoyment?

Well, mine is, but I revel in a potential lack of purpose.

Exactly. And I do not think my life has a grand purpose or anything. I'm just trying to make the most of it :)

The meaning of the universe is to reach homogeneous distribution of thermal energy. Nothing more, nothing less.
I find that fascinating. While we as humans concern ourselves with many things and many criteria -- love, wealth, family, a good book, blah blah blah -- the universe is solely concerned with one goal, and pursues it relentlessly.

The universe doesnt have a goal obviously.

The meaning of life for humans is to have sex, have kids, and colonize the galaxy and maybe one day the universe.

As a species, humans can only comprehend meanings we find valid, aka. the meaning of humanity is our meaning of the universe. The "absolute" meaning of the universe is simply the amalgam of every species' every pursuit and meaning.

The meaning of human existence is progress. When the development of society virtually secured our survival, which had formerly been the goal humanity'd strived for, we smartypant humans came up with new ways to progress, being culture, the sciences, theologies. The newest wave in the attempt to secure our individual illusion of progress is the internet, and more notably, collective sites like Wikipedia that allow us to believe we are taking part in the shaping of the internet, thus progressing.

I think you need to catch up on the latest 100 years' worth of physics.

I'm with AL_DA_GREAT: I have no idea why the universe as a whole would need a meaning. I like Eran's "backup" idea too - change the subject from meaning to value.

The purpose of the universe is to provide consciousness with the experience of separateness and individuality.
