What should the US response Be?

Originally posted by SunTzu:<br /><strong>**** them, lets go to war! <img src="graemlins/snipersmilie.gif" border="0" alt="[Sniper]" /> </strong><hr></blockquote>

You should actually be embarassed about this statement but I know you won't be. You're to imature and ignorant.

If you had any idea what REAL war is about you wouldn't be so anxious to get involved in one.

Yes war is sometimes a neccesary evil but it's NEVER something to get excited about and certainly not something you do at the drop of a hat.

Pick a war... World War I or II.. Vietnam or Korea... find a veteran from that war and talk to them about their experiences. I'm sure they won't share your enthusiasm.

All of you please calm down a bit.

The US still hasn't even burried our dead.

They are still looking for people, people I know, and will probaly never see again.

All of you, step back and take a deep breath please.

i'm with red wolf on this one, its time to slow down and think this out.

I'll explain that remark if you want.

Here's your old quote:

"send such a message NOW, it will only get worse. And when we do lock onto somebody, we should kill them ALL. And by "ALL", I mean women, children, the elderly, parents, mothers, brothers, fathers, sitsers, aunts, uncles, the guy at the end of the block that no one ever talks to!EVERYONE who would condone or celebrate such an act."

It sounds to me like you're advocating genocide.<br />The hell with who actually did or planned this.. lets just wipe out some foreign country. (maybe we might kill the terrorists in the process but who cares) Even the children are guilty right?

I can't even believe this. If YOU actually believe it then you really are not that different from the crazies that blow up cars and buses in the middle east.

And no I'm not jealous of your country so don't even start with that crap. Jealousy isn't my motivator - it's disgust (not of America... but of your post)

The course of action that I desire is very exterme. But, we are faced with an extreme situation. The only way to respond to this kind of viciousness is IN KIND!!! It's the only thing that these fu*ks understand! We (the US) didn't start this, but you can bet your ass that we're goint to finish it! And don't start with all that tired old "American oppression/exploitation" of the Middle East crap either. I for one, have yet to oppress/exploit anyone.

The estimate as of midnight, as per the New York Port Authority, which is serving as a temporary moruge, is an expected 30,000 dead.

Some 80%+ of Americans polled want a military repsonse to this action.

Over 80% polled said that this attack is *worse* than the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Some of my fellow Americans who post here have displayed a bit of hubris regarding US might. Some of the others here have felt this shows why the US, being so over-confident, never expected an attack like this.

But there is another reason - I think many of us never expected anyone to be so foolish. gjts00 is right in a way, though I would have said it differently.

This attack is unprecedented - - expect a response from the US that is unprecedented. More than cruise missles, more than advisors and half-hearted troop deployment(a la VietNam), more than Desert Storm, perhaps even more than the invasion of Normandy (you few Europeans who have been so quick to gloat do remember that minor historical footnote, I hope.) This is the tragic reality of when a large, economically strong nation of people have been hurt very deeply in this way. Even our own military people probably can not grasp the full extent of our ability to respond to this - we have way too much infrastructure, built up over decades. This is not the former Soviet Union of our imagination - it will be a very one-sided conflict.

There will be horrible destruction of life, and it will be very sad. But only an idiot could have not predicted it - so it is perhaps inevitable.

Yes, because killing more innocent men women and children will certainly bring YOUR dead back. It will also make everything "right' in the world again.

1 wrong + 1 wrong = 1 right

Silly me. How could i forget that simple mathamatical equasion.

Who are "these "f*cks"? Are they the women and children that you plan to kill? Apparently you can live with that. I'm glad.

Hey RedWolf<br />I think whoever stated first that &#8220;equation&#8221; deserves Nobel Price!!!! What a genius!!! That is the funnies thing I have seen in months!!! The sad thing is many of us (humans) think that this is right!

You're right RW, a reprisal won't bring back those innocent Americans who were killed. A reprisal on the other hand, will give the US closure. I want to see this debacle settled on a battle field, not a courtroom. As I've said before...If we don't send a clear & violent message that we will not abide such aggression against our country, we invite disasters just as bad or worse than those of 9/11/01.

<br />"Those fu*ks" consist of anyone who would commit, support, condone or celebrate such an action. And if their women & children (who, btw are no more or less innocent that the women & children that we lost on 9/11/01) get killed in the mix I can live with that. In fact, if the women & children that I've seen celebrating in the streets of the Middle East on tv the past couple of days get killed, I can definetly live with that.

Don't you GET it? Thats EXACTLY my point! Those women and children (also probably lots of men) are JUST as innocent as the people in the trade center. Don't you see? They don't deserve to die ANY more than those Americans did.

How will killing MORE innocents give you CLOSURE? Killing will make you feel better? Thats pretty damn sick. I sincerely hope that most Americans don't share this view. I've never believed that Americans on the whole are bad people...

Red Wolf, I'm a completely sane person, although irrational at times. I have my own version of the golden rule, as follows...Do onto others as they have done onto you. I believe in the "an eye for an eye" (or better if you're capable) concept. If you think that that makes me a sick/bad person, I disagree. I'm just not as forgiving as you seem to be.

<br />I do believe that quite a few Americans feel much like I do. Although, some may not be as outspoken. Here's an example, the words of US Senator John McCain..."We'll break their backs. God may forgive them, but we won't." Get on with your bad self Senator!

RedWolf -

What happens if the US does NOT respond with a strong action? Is it not possible that things would get worse?

Other than breaking the US up into 4-5 smaller countries, there is little we could do to avoid this kind of attention. Even a much improved US foreign policy (I agree - a LOT of room for improvement!) still entails siding with someone in a conflict - or, doing nothing, and having the inaction criticized. If the real problem in many counrties is ongoing civil war or ethnic strife, it is much easier to blame the west (specifically the US) for your problems then to change centuries of inate strife and hatreds.

Hopefully, a strong, appropriate action is not just closure - it ends the problem. If nations are too scared to harbor and support terrorists, there will still be people unhappy with the US and the west, but they will be much less able to kill 30,000 civilians within the course of a few hours.

The first thing the US should do is take a deep breath (like forum visitors here should also do), bury their death and after that find the people who did this. Reacting to fast and striking the wrong people will be a terrible mistake.

To those hotheaded hotshots on this site I would like to say that America is a democracy, a democracy that stands for a lot of good things in the world. They shouldn't bomb women or children in a random way to retaliate for those awfull things that happened in New York. If the US would do that they would be no better than the terrorists that flew those airplanes in the buildings.

Militarily & economicaly, the US IS the single most powerful nation on the rock. That's not just brovado, it's backed by FACT!!! Jealousy is about the only motivator I can imagine for such critism. There's a score to be setteled here. We have the upper hand & we WILL prevail by entheusasticaly smashing those who would destroy the fabric of our nation. <hr></blockquote>

Well the events 0f 9/11/01 has proven different.America stands pretty weak now.Yes it has the biggest conventual and un-conventual army in the world. But no army nore defense systems can stop these sort of terrorist attack. And this time it were 'just' plane's.The fear is big that a lot of the rougue nations harbouring terrorist have power over nuclear bombs. How can you defend yourself against that? What if some crazy ass terrorist one day releases a nuclear or biological bomb? You problably never could prove who did it anyway. And you just can't declare war against the whole middle east and exterminate all terrorist organization and make it so that now new terrorist organization would ever be born.

What you have to do is search the support of country's like Russia and China ,strongly condeming terrorism toghether. If Nato can work toghether with these country's to fight terrorism,<br />then the middle East will feel threathent and probably eager to talk tu us than to terrorize us.

But maybe some of these terrorist has gotten ,or are getting too powerfull.i dont know how far they are ,This is something for the C.I.A to know.We have to fight individuals ,like bin Laden And Sadam.

America should:<br />-withdraw all forces in the middle east: Saoedi Arabia, Kuwait, Jordania, the Gulf, etc.<br />-break the no fly zone above Iraq<br />-stop negotiations with Israel and Palestina

In other words: Get the hell out of the middle east and mind your own business. Let the middle east solve their own problems.

I really hope sometime an Islamitic state will arise, just like the United states of america, and a united Europe. It would be really good. I think this is unavoidable. America is actively trying to avoid this, and this is the reason of all the conflicts in the middle east.

You would say why? America is only trying to keep peace? quite the contrary. America is only in the middle east because of economical interests: Get their oil at a VERY cheap prize. Americans do not give a F**K about Kuwait people. Why does America free Kuwait and not Palestina?<br />The answer is: OIL. there is no oil in Palestina. there is no oil in Bosnia. There is no OIL in Afrika. They dont give a damn there?

To avoid problems, USA should withdraw out of middle east immediatly. If they dont like a higher prize for oil: mine your own! there is MORE then enough oil in the united states. Why do they not mine their own oil? simple, they want to keep a reserve for when the oil in the middle east is depleted!

American foreign policies are extremely egocentric. They protect their economical interest. If you believe in your arrogance that you can do this because you have the most powerfull army in the world, then dont start complaining about what happened in New York. This is the only way the middle east can fight back. Ofcourse it is nice that so many "innocent" people got killed, but i dont blame them. They simply do not have the power to defend them with high tech stuff that the americans have. They have a right to protect themselfs, and this is the best way to do it.

I would not be surprised if this is a combined attack from Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Eypt, Jordania, maybe Saudi Arabia.

Maybe im just ignorant, but this is what i believe. Everyone has the same right to devellop. Middle east is being exploited. The attitude of "western civilization" has never changed concerning colonization and expantion.

My background: I am dutch, born raised, i have no arabic background. I'm christian and i watch CNN. I have had the highest highschool in the Netherlands, and im currently studying last year Environmental Science.<br />This is not much though to have good insight in world politics, but so far, this is what i picked up.

I hear a lot of american sayings lately that are far more ignorant then i have posted above that really disgust me, here a few:

-"this was an attack not only on America, but on entire Civilization!"<br />-"this is pearl harbor 2"<br />-"this is a common enemy for all democratic countries"

America, you want to be isolationistical??? THEN BE SO! Withdraw all your troops, just buy your oil from whoever you can get it the cheapest, do not enforce cheap oil by protecting some countries that you can exploit! Build up a strong oil economy of your own, and start building on Alternative energy like solar and wind power, earth heath.

If you do not do so, and prefer cheap oil, please dont whine about the consequences!

You want an enemy? i suggest you nuke the entire middle east. Oh wait! then you have to mine the oil in the middle east yourself!

My 2 cents.

All of you seem to be missing the magnitude of the upcomming war. It has been apparent to me for over a day that this not a war against one terrorist organization, but what is being organized by Bush and Poweel is a war on ALL TERRORST GROUPS (or at least the international ones that affect the western industrialized nations) by all the the idnustrialized nations. A coalitioan is being organized to take THEM ALL out. Its not year clear if pricipaly nationalist groups like the Parts of the IRA or the Basque groups in spain will be targeted.

You al little behind the time, although not as far as many of the fools who have posted here. We are already at "war" (state of hostilities), as stated by the President & All members of congress. Western Europe & Canada are already at "war:, per the unanimous resolution of the NATO council citing article 5.

To all you self-riteous europeans out there who are telling the U.S. what to do just shut up. We have made mistakes in the past, but our intentions were good.

Maybe we should have kept our a$$es out of Europe 60 years ago like you all are so anxious for us to do now. Imagine the state of the European economies if we had not pumped billions of dollars of 0 interest loans there in the 40s 50s and 60s. Think of the state your economies would have been in if you had to field the huge military we did to keep the Soviets out. You think stalin would have stopped with E. Germany?

Why do you continue to defend the rights of nation-states with no regard for liberty and human rights that we all cherish? Do you see any Civfanatics here from afghanastan or syria here? Why do you think we should leave nations alone which constantly support groups who would like to see our country destroyed. Why do you not support Isreal when it is Europe who owes the Jews more than anyone? You constantly looked away when trains were loaded and sent East to Poland, or have you forgotten? Isreal has constantly tried to allow Palistineans to live peacefully in their country, while the PLO charter calls for the destruction of Isreal. Whose side are you on?? We feel a moral obligation to protect the human rights and liberties of others outside our borders, and yet you call us an immoral people?

If we end our support of Isreal are you willing to look the other way when they are attacked by every fanatical group of Muslims with every intention of destroying them? What if Europe becomes the target of terrorism would you still wish us to keep our noses in our own business? Just in the last 30 years or so European economies have become self-sufficent and now you wish us to go home.

Guess what...we will keep our interests every where. And you know why? We are all European, Asian, African, Muslim, Christian, etc. And we still care about other parts of the world!! For years we have allowed nations like Syria and Afghanastan to carry on because we respected their rights as a nation. No More!!! They messed with us and now instead of the gentle giant...we are going one big pissed off monster ready to take on the world for freedom.

I just wish you all would get some balls and find another cause than stradling the fence and bad-mouthing Me an My Country.

Damned if ya do, damned if ya don't, but we really don't care anymore.
