Wheel of Time - Watching-ish with wife on AMAZON Prime. It's OK. I can't really give it a full review because I'm only half watching it, but from what I've seen, it seems to be a mashup of a bunch of stuff that's already been done, like GoT, Narnia, LoTR, and similar. The characters are pretty cool, and the acting is decent. Worth checking out.

Finally caught up on Foundation. Season's over. :( Easy 9/10.
They butchered one of my all time favourite scifi novels.
It started out as a 4/10 and got worse. 3/10.

Yes, it has been a very nice series so far.

Since I don't remember the books, it has been a very entertaining series.

I don't know if I'd say they "butchered" the novels, because frankly most of the storylines were completely new and invented for the show. As I said at the beginning, if you go in expecting a faithful adaptation you're going to be disappointed. The producers took the general idea from the books and then created a new mythos, borrowing a few plot points here and there from the novels.

Such as it is, Foundation was an acceptable, if not enjoyable show. By far the best parts were the ones dealing with the Galactic Empire and the three Cleon clones, especially Lee Pace's Brother Day. Unfortunately, the worst parts of the show dealt with the actual Foundation. I found Leah Harvey's Salvor Hardin extraordinarily bland and uninteresting. Lou Llobell's Gaal Dornick was better, though I really felt her story went nowhere for the most part, and seemed to only be setting her character up for something next season. It was clever to make the Emperor a clone so they could keep the same actors, but it was a painful contrivance that they used to keep the Gaal & Salvor characters.

I think I mentioned it before that the cinematography is gorgeous, however after watching the whole season I have to amend that observation. Parts of the show were absolutely stunning and conveyed a grand, sprawling story. Other parts, were small and constrained, with the sets and effects almost amateurish in their scope. It was quite the contrast. Although, I did notice in the finale they must have blown their budget with several unique digital creatures, which I did enjoy.

I gave the Empire parts an 8/10 and everything else a 5/10, so overall I rounded up and rated it a 7/10 on the main review sites.

7/10 is fair overall. General chat about the show the empire parts were cool the rest eh.

I have only got to E8 of Foundation, but:
Spoiler :
WTH is going on with the "vault" now? Is it a time machine? Does that not completely break the whole principle of psychohistory? I expect I will find out this evening with E9.

Rewatched the first season of Another Life since I'd forgotten everything, and then watched the new second season.

Really, a fantastic show. 8.5/10 and then 9.5/10. Great.

So, time for my monthly update... ;)

Finished Stumptown S1, which wrapped up most of its threads neatly enough (good, because there is little to no prospect of S2). The only minor disappointment I had with the last episode was the narrative-resolution-by-shootout, which is such a boring trope in itself — and one which the series had also pretty much managed to avoid up to that point.

Hilda S2 was just as much fun as S1 — except it finished on a total cliffhanger, with no indication of whether an S3 is in the offing.

Re-started from the beginning on Cowboy Bebop (original anime version) not long after my last post, and watched the last 2 eps back-to-back last night (man, whatta downer). Netflix.de is now trying to push the new live-action version at me as well. Although the trailers do look like they've done a really good job of translating the visuals, that's not enough in itself, so I think I'll hold off on that for a while.

Changed my mind and carried on with S.W.A.T. While it would likely be difficult to find a more earnest apologia for policemen-with-guns (the cold-open of the first episode had the old squad-leader accidentally shooting an unarmed teenager instead of the suspect he was chasing, and immediately getting fired; I strongly suspect this would not generally reflect reality), I have nonetheless been surprised at how few episodes have ended with the suspects-of-the-week getting shot, rather than being taken into custody.

Watched the first episode of Inside Job on a whim (basic premise: every conspiracy theory you can think of is actually true, but being covered up by a bunch of dysfunctional geniuses working for the Deep State), and found it amusing enough to carry on with it.

Family viewing has pretty much settled down to 2 episodes of Buffy per evening most weekdays, so we're now halfway through S3 already.

The Sinner - 1st 3 seasons.
Complicated, but well-scripted plots with some very good performances.
Claire Coons was great in season 2 (after her excellent effort in a season of Fargo).
Occasionally bewildering because of unclear jumps backwards in time.
Often harrowing but not unnecessarily gory.
7.5/10.

Tiger King 2
When I hear the word culture, I reach for my gun. - Hanns Johst.
Hold my beer. - Joe Exotic.

Tiger King is like a train derailment, on fire, crashing into a dumpster, full of lit fireworks, going off of a cliff, into a pool of green fire, inside of an open, actively melting down nuclear reactor.

It is the worst cluster**** of insanity you have ever seen, but there is absolutely no way whatsoever that you can stop watching it... precisely because it is the worst cluster**** of insanity you have ever seen.

I know, I can't hardly wait for Tiger King 3 either.

I'll give it a try :)

I was very skeptical of Arcane for the first two episodes but ended up sobbing like a baby at the third. I guess I'm sold.

I'm really glad I watched S1 of The Sinner, if only because it was fascinating.

I'm starting Kim's Convenience, since it feels like it will be light-hearted humour in a world that seems to be spiraling to 'gritty'.
