What Video Games have you been playing II: Have you finished that backlog?

Just finished some side quest in Oblivion I've never done before, even though I've of course played hundreds upon hundreds and maybe close to a thousand hours of it. I love that.

Sanctum 2 - Tower Defense + First Person Shooter, plus co-op. Totally radical.

Decided to play a lot of Command and Conquer Generals (German self-propelled bomb cart edition) and also decided to start the RA3 Japan campaign.
Notes so far:
Nuke/SCUD spam is a lovely thing.
Shogun Executioners are awesome.
I've become convinced that the USA's particle cannon is a joke.

Well, unlike the other two superweapons, only the Particle Cannon can completely get rid of the GLA Holes left behind with only one application.

Protip: you can double-click to make the beam move much faster. It took me a while to realize this but it makes the weapon waaaaay more usable.

I play the hell out of that game so much when I was a teenager. Unfortunately it's C&C "in name only", pretty much every C&C element was removed by EA. To their credit at least they did a great job with C&C3 Tiberium Wars, but then they dropped the bomb on RA3 and especially C&C4 imo.

Max Payne 3

It's pretty okay, but also horribly short. I clocked the game within 10 hours. Maybe I should try the arcade stuff.

So that's what happens when all your family dies. I think I'll put the greedy-and-corrupt-yet-somehow-still-loyal-to-Arstotzka playthrough on the backburner.

Another game from the backlog, Deus Ex. I'm thinking stealthy and non-lethal, but I'm not sure how I should deal with the Transgenics. Greasels sound like they should be exterminated, but I'm not sure about Grays.

Played some Skyrim again.

That bastard Miraak stole a dragon soul from me!

Skyrim seems interesting, but I really don't like magic or fantasy. Is there any way I could play as a non-magic-using character who specializes in fighting magic-users (magicians? :crazyeye:)?

You don't need to use magic at all. You can just play as a warrior or an archer. Or both. IN theory most players will always use a bit of magic - especially if you count alchemy as magic - but there's nothing that says you can't ignore all that. Actually the most popular guild/faction in the game, the dark brotherhood, is pretty much an assassins guild, so, well, magic not required to murder you know.

You could even fight with your bare fists if you want.

You can even not fight at all.

You can even roleplay as a farmer or smith who is only saving enough money to buy a house.

I personally don't think of magic in TES as in your face as it is in other fantasy genres, for what it's worth, anyhow.

Though if you're really not into fantasy and/or historically/mythologically inspired settings, but still want something very close to skyrim, you can always try one of the fallout games.

Fallout: New Vegas is a much better game, anyways.

Replaying Fallout 3... Texture packs and ENB actually makes the game not terrible to look at.

Warrior or an archer? Can you be a well-armored archer who's also good up close? Or can you fight on horseback?

As for Fallout, I've been hooked on New Vegas for at least half a year now, and before that, Fallout 3. :p

You can be a warrior. You can be an archer. You can be a warrior and an archer. You can be neither.

You can be good at swinging swords and blocking with shields. You could be awesome with longbows. Or, you can snipe enemies with crossbows but when they come close you clobber them with your giant warhammer. You can do all or some of the above with light armor, or heavy armor, take your pick.

You can be whoever you want. Well, obviously some routes are harder than others, and sometimes certain playstyles aren't as practical (there's no point in learning how to chuck fireballs and be an archer since they both accomplish similar things - hitting the enemy from a distance, but there's nothing that says that you can't).

I am not an expert at fallout (never appealed to me the way the TES world could), but I think it's similar to how there you can in theory use a whole variety of guns but it's better to specialize to a few types. Ovreall though in Skyrim (and the other TES games to a slightly less extent) there are no real preset classes, like in Fallout, you pretty much make your own. Certainly there are some common archetypes many people tend to follow, but you can do whatever the heck you want within the game's limitations.

And yeah you can fight on horseback but it's kind of bleh. They added it as a free feature after a patch and while I appreciate the thought I usually just dismount to fight.

Payday 2 is FREAKIN' AWESOME

Yeah I'm trying it out during the free weekend as I'd imagine most people are. My friends have played it for a while(it's funny to see our levels of like 48,48,47, and then...3) and it's a lot of fun as long as we don't lock up between assault waves and don't accomplish anything. Also one of them kept dropping C4 on doors as I was going to pick the locks lol

One of them hadn't played in a while and wasn't ready for a Cloaker to show up which I swear to God is like that one Scooby Doo villain.

Just finished my first twelve-win arena run in Hearthstone. I lost the first game, then won all the rest. I also now have over 1600 gold, so... yeah.

I also started making my way through the Magic 2014 DotP campaign. The UI is so bad compared to Hearthstone, but Magic is different enough that it's still fun.
