18 was the total originaly slated for launch. But Beach and others have suggested adjustments will be made on the game before the release date. Meaning not all is set in stone maybe. Perhaps they will make room for 4 additional Civs to bring it to 22.

Source?

They seemed to have confirmed that the game will ship with 18 civs one way or another. Possibly 19 depending on where the Aztecs fall.

I am still not sure whether these "first look" images are real or not, but since it is speculation anyways I will add some points to this discussion. The most known buildings from Istanbul are of course Hagia Sophia and the Blue mosque. But almost every Sultan has ordered to build a mosque in his name in Istanbul or other cities. Examples (Fatih) Mehmed II - Fatih Mosque, Bayezid II - Bayezid mosque, Selim I - Yavuz Selim, Suleyman - Suleymaniye, Selim II - Selimiye Mosque (Edirne) etc. Since the most known architect from Ottoman Empire is Mimar Sinan it could be one of his mosques. These are Suleymaniye in Istanbul and Selimiye in Edirne. Since they will not pick a mosque not in the capital, Selimiye would drop off. So it could be Suleyman again in front of Suleymaniye mosque. Here is a picture of Suleymaniye:

But because of the tweet of Mehmed II and Istanbul, here is a picture of Fatih mosque:

But most of these mosques look very similar, so it would not give much away.

Also Sashibo2 welcome to the Civfanatics forum. Since you registered today and there was a similar hoax with the first look images, I am still not enough convinced though.

Well this just feels sloppy. The series has always used Sumeria as the civ name.

Are we blaming Firaxis now for correcting their mistakes from previous iterations? Sumeria isn't even the correct spelling..

Okay, now I call fake. Given how these images are composed, this is the bottom left corner of the screen, where it starts fading out to that brownish red. Why is the centre of the Hagia Sofia hiding in a corner. Even if I were to have it in the distance it would be a focal point in the composition.

Besides which to me it looks like a photo run through a watercolor filter. Though that admittedly might be image quality.

It looks more like the Blue Mosque is sitting in the bottom-left corner, with presumably the Hagia Sophia taking the center of the leaderscreen.

They are both situated very close to each-other.

I asked my friend if there was a clearer picture of the screen and he told me this was all he was sent. :(

Oh, I'm not saying which one is right or not. But I'm sure not betting on them changing it up now. And definitely not because someone pulled the old "my special source has revealed to me super special information and he's willing to share it with me but only in the form of a few corners of a screen"
Is this friend's last name Patterson or Gimlin by any chance?

Those "First Look" images have zero value. Some people found the font used here (I could do it myself, just don't want to spend time on this) and could produce such pics in half an hour.

I said Rome again. I think when we learn about military engineers, we will get Rome. I am almost certain that one of their abilities will be early access to medieval roads and bridges (and maybe forts, too)... likely through their Legion UU.

I figured the Legion UU might start with a Military Engineer already linked to it.

With ability to unlink it? Otherwise it would be quite hard to not being able to attach ram or siege tower :)

Depending on how military engineers work, Legionnaires could get the ability directly, without additional unit attached.

Remember Civ 5's civs were all revealed way before launch, so they don't necessarily save all the civs for dropping them 1 per week, we might get two per week again.

p.s. I belive those images are real, at least they give nice buzz for fans. :)

I don't know if Firaxis signed NDA with their stuffs or not, but the guy who leak the picture must breach the the general confidentiality obligations of employees.

So, in other words, we still have no idea who would lead the Ottomans even if this leak is real, because that mosque in the picture could be any mosque!
