I'm just sort of idly curious, and I assume index and middle will be the only two to get serious votes, but I've been wondering about it on and off since I got up this morning and I'm not sure which of those two would win . . .

Middle

Index finger.

Why would you move your index finger to scroll the mouse wheel? That makes no sense! Your middle finger is already there, and your index finger is assigned to left-clicks.

My middle finger handles right-clicks. It'd take more effort to move that finger, which I barely use, than my more maneuverable index finger.

I use my index finger...

I got same finger placement as Dachs, although i also use a laptop with NO scroll...

I'm with Dachs actually, though I can see Defiant's perspective and that's why I made the poll.

My resting position has my middle finger almost all the way to the side of the mouse, like an anchor. It sits on the right edge of the right button while my index sits on the right edge of the left button.

So my index is actually closer to the wheel than my middle.

But lately I've been trying Chrome, which doesn't let me use that middle button virtual scroller thingie, so I've been moving my middle finger more since it has greater vertical range . . .

Oh, so you people have your two fingers sprawled out on the mouse? That makes more sense. Try switching to three, it's more efficient ;)

Hmm, I never realized that Chrome doesn't let you do that until now. That's funny. I don't usually use it anyway, though I loved the Grab and Drag Firefox addon.

My mouse ain't that big dude.

3 fingers on the mouse is less comfy though.

I'm an index finger man.

My trouble is that either my mouse is too sensitive or I lack fine motor control. I need some fingers on the mouse pad to act as a brake . . .

I'm using a small wireless mouse for my laptop, so use my middle finger on the wheel, its more efficient.

The middle finger. I keep my index on my left and the ring on the right.

It's weird though, I have two grips. Sometimes, I have my index on the left button and the middle finger on the right. The middle finger switches to the mousewheel when necessary. I know that it's more efficient to have three in an index-middle-ring setup, but for some reason I just don't do it all the time. In fact, even when I do have all three fingers on the mouse, I still click MOUSE2 with the index finger.

I know for sure though that it'd be more efficient to have MOUSE3 be the microphone button, but when I play games, it's always the two-finger setup.

Index. If I'm reading things then I really don't need to do much clicking anyway, and for gaming I never scroll through weapons or w/e with the wheel I just select them with the numpad.
