Which is the best US State to live ?

I live in Ohio and love it. It has a good mix of rural and urban without the metropolis problems of Chicago, NYC, or LA. However I voted for Colorado. I love the outdoors and Colorado has some of the best I've seen. You also have some population areas so that you can have your modern convienences. The mountains are great, and the air is nice and dry (I hate bugs!!!)
If you don't want to be around people, Wyoming is even better. with somewhere around 500,000 people for the entire state, there certainly is elbow room. You also get Yellowstone, the Tetons, and Devil's tower.
If you like people and want to live in a city, San Fran is really nice. Avoid LA like the plague though. Nowhere have I seen smog like that, though I haven't been to Mexico City yet. The people aren't the friendliest either.
The midwest can be great, if you aren't looking for too much in the way of multiculturalism. It's not that its frowned on or discouraged or anything like that, its just that it hasn't really gotten there yet.
The south is too damn hot and muggy.

Texas is a wonderful state. And I have been to 46 of them. Houston is polluted, but that is the consequence for burning so much damn oil in this country. For those of you who are living in the states: stop driving your cars, turning your lights on, and eating your cooked food OR stop complaining about Houston pollution. They refine the oil you burn. Plus, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin, and the like aren't polluted any more than any other American cities of comparable size, and you have never been to the hill country.

I would have to vote for Britain as it is a nice place to live with a lot of history. The country speaks brilliant English and so many Americans will feel at home here. Obviously there are slight cultural differences, like sport but I think with a lot of hard work by certain groups such as Hollywood will eventually overcome this. Obviously there is the problem of the famous British reserve but with more Americans coming over I am sure that their over the top behaviour will the British shall come out of their shells.

Anyone thats been to new england knows it's the place to be! 4 distinct seasons, lots of wide open spaces. A few quaint, but interesting cities and more history than most any other states can shake a stick at!

Much like what Allan said about Minnesota applies to Nebraska.
The people, the outdoors, and the sheer joy of being able to drive in any direction five minutes and be totally away from civilization makes Nebraska the BEST state.
Nothing in the world is better than looking up at that endless blue sky (And not freezing to death during the winter aka Minn.

Well, I'm a California native so I'd have to say.......somewhere else!
California does have it all. Where I live, in SoCal, I can go to some of the best beaches in the world and, two hours later, I can be skiing or snow boarding. We've got desert and forest. You name it, you can almost surely find it here.
Unfortunately, a LOT of people have realized this over the last 75 yrs or so, and we've gotten a little crowded.
I lived in Oregon for a year, and just loved it. Were it not for the fact that my son's mother lives here in SoCal, we'd move up there in a heartbeat.
I also spent September of '98 in Texas and it was the longest year of my life. I mean, crap man, you can HEAR the freaking bugs, there are so many of them. That was just too much for me. The traffic was worse than L.A. even, and the polution is like L.A.'s was 10 or 15 years ago.
Add the fact that the Cowboys play there and that place is just hell on earth.
Of states I haven't been to, I think Minnesota would be my first choice, though.

I have been to both Washington (state) and Colorado, and they seemed like nice places to live. In any case, I would say that Arizona is not a good place to live, as the extreme heat causes the deaths of many of those senior citizens who move there, and we are something like the 46th state in education (out of 50 with a higher number being worse). Also we have a serious issue with dust pollution, and near the Mexico border with smoke from wood fires (during the winter) or chemical fires (when a landfill on the other side of the border ignites).

Actually, I think last year far more people died in the midwest during that big heat wave. Plus, I actually remember only one case of an elderly man dying from heat stroke this past summer. Needless to say, if you can't stand the heat, then you probably shouldn't live here.

Unbelievable that a team could finish second in their conference and go to the title game, while the team that WON THE CONFERENCE doesn't.
I'm not a Colorado fan, but I just think this is such a joke. I hope they win, cuz then they'll be remembered for this.....just like 'W'

With some states bunched together like this, the results are hard to interpret: 4 votes for NEw England (5 states) = good or bad?
Someone should make 5 new polls of the best state with 10 choices each (each poll covers a different geographic region of U.S.)
Then take the highest vote-getters and put them into a final poll to determine the grand champion
