It should help your reading but they are actually remarkably different considering the shared history. I've always heard that Chinese = easier to comprehend, harder to say and Japanese = easier to say, harder to comprehend; at least for English/Dutch speakers from a syntactical standpoint. Regardless, Japanese is a remarkably easy language, in my opinion, and that coupled with 120 million native speakers makes it worth learning.

Yeah, I'm thinking that it would help me read Kanji. But, as you can see, I've got my hands quite full right now and Japanese is not a priority. I'll do it if I can.

I'm learning French and Spanish now.

I don't understand why you'd need to study French, just learn Italian and don't pronounce half the consonants, and speak through your nose ;)

I apologize. One of my Italian class's favorite activities was ripping on the nearby French class. Anyway, where did you find someone to teach you Bahasa? Did you just go to Indonesia?

Why is that Gort is so popular with Brazilian immigrants? Seems kind of random that they'd go to Gort in such disproportionate numbers.
A group were invited over to work in a slaughter house there, they settled and brought family, which attracted more and now there is definite Latin feel to that grey town in county Galway.

The last census says the population of Gort was 2646 of which 884 were born in Brazil. Link

Mandarin, Korean, and German. All I get in this school is French and Spanish though :(

Well, since I'm progressing somewhat well in French, I'd say Chinese.

I know it sounds a little Bushian, but I can learn French on my own without supernatural powers.

Because the French have always defeated the Italians in battle ;)

I lived there. Interestingly, I believe Bahasa actually has one of the higher number of speakers in the world by sheer size of population.

You forgot sign language; I would prefer to learn it.

It would be useful in loud places and so on...

a splendid choice if there were such a thing as a universal sign language. heck, even as it is sign language gets my vote.

note, it's Hindi not Hindu

I am already into Japanese. Another language that I would like to learn is German.

Lithuanian, so I can visit my home country.

Russian.

Already have a decent handle on the Germanic and Latin language groups. Need to diversify and break into that huge Slavic world somehow.

Besides, Russia is damn cool, except for the bits that are bloody frightening. Still, all the more reason to go figure it out.:scan::)

Or I could take up the Japanese I left off some 15 years ago. Mebbe Chinese... There are so many... :(

I chose German. I'm currently learning French as a foreign language, but I'd much rather have german, due to personal preferences. Hmm and I also read an article in the Economist that Germany is overtaking French as one of the EU's leading lingua franca's? Can anyone clarify this? Plus it dominates the EU do to its industrial strength, from what I read.

The emerging economies of Eastern Europe are a growing base for German education. In some places, students learn German before English.

I was going to give Russian a go but was told its ridiculously hard and I have no gift for language

I currently have Chinese, so... I would like to learn French so I can speak it with an arrogant tone and look down on others =P

Japanese would be good. It would be nice to understand anime without having to read the subtitles.

Russian grammar is very difficult (at least to an English speaker like me) as you have to remember cases for conjugation for plural and singular, as well as masculine and feminine. There are a few other aspects but the grammar is my biggest complaint. Vocabulary isnt too bad IMO, and pronunciation is surprisingly easy, at least compared to a native Russian trying to learn to pronounce English words.

I can Catalan, Spanish, English, German and Mandarin Chinese and I'm studying right now the basics of Basque. So I don't know. Maybe something celtic like Welsh or native american, like Nahuatl and stuff.
