Well I ended up getting Windows 7 RC (the free evaluation copy on microsoft.com) and its pretty nice. It looks cool and I havent had to reinstall any of my programs except for my virus protection, so it didn't take much time to install. It runs pretty quickly, but only after it starts up fully, which takes a good 5-10 minutes. Other than that, it runs all my games, internet, and what not. Plus none of my files, pictures, or programs were lost during the uprgrade. However, it is just a little buggy, so if you have no tolerance for bugs, I wouldn't get it until maybe SP1 is released, but if you can deal with that I would reccomend you downloading the RC: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/dd353205.aspx
One More thing, Internet Explorer 8 sucks, really really sucks. So if you know how to, and if you get Windows 7, downgrade your browser to Internet Explorer 7, or get Safari. Just not IE8, it sucks. REALLY SUCKS!!
If I put x32, meaning 32-bit I really mean (x86), I didn't realize I was making a mistake, and I don't feel like editing all my posts, but I'm sure you all knew what I meant.
Minimum System Requirements for Windows 7:

Internet access (to download Windows 7 RC and get updates)
A PC with these minimum recommended specifications:
- 1 GHz 32-bit or 64-bit processor or higher
- 1 GB of system memory or more
- 16 GB of available disk space
- Support for DirectX 9 graphics with 128 MB memory (to enable the Aero theme)
- DVD-R/W Drive
Please note these specifications could change. And, some product features of Windows 7, such as the ability to watch and record live TV or navigation through the use of "touch," may require advanced or additional hardware.
 
Although I don't like Windows, I have to uise them because of games, but anyway: XP is infinitely much better than Vista. Vista is a memoryhog deluxe and I hate it with a passion.
 
Short version: Windows 7 > Win XP >= Vista.

When running laptops, I prefer XP over Vista. Actually, I prefer XP over Vista in general, but that's probably the inertia talking.

edit: With > 4GB of RAM, you can throw WinXP out of the discussion. In that situation, I'm not aware of any compelling reason to pick Vista over the 7 RC.
 
So, to summarize that article, Windows Vista sucks. But with a few minor cosmetic changes it isn't so bad anymore?

Vists is far superior to XP, especially 64-bit Vista. The 32-bit OS memory limit of 4GB (including video card memory) just wasn't cutting it anymore.

You have 6 gigs of memory. I'm not sure why you're even including XP in the discussion.

edit: anyone who voted XP after seeing "6 gigs of RAM" doesn't know what they're talking about.

Don't run Vista on older computers.
 
XP sucks compared to any modern operating system.

Vista is fine.

It's generally not worth buying operating systems for a computer that already has one, just get an OEM copy of whatever the latest version of Windows is next time you get a new computer.

Windows 7 RC goes crazy and performs like poop with some dual-cpu Nehalem setups. With non-release version operating systems, you get what you pay for.
 
Just to be clear, you'll need a 64 Bit version of Vista to make use of your additional ram. If your computer came with the ram, you probably already are running 64 bit. If you upgraded the ram yourself, you're probably running 32 and are wasting ~2.something gigs.

Haven't tried Chrome, but yes, XP is inferior to all those others.

The RC is free to anyone, supplied by MS. It's supplied "as is" though, so if it crashes and you lose important data, or MS decides not to patch some security holes, and your bank account info turns up in Nigeria, you're SoL. In short, if you have to ask about it, you shouldn't be using it.

Which is why the test I did of it was on an older off-network computer I lent my mother-in-law to do word processing on.

I have to say, I dig 7 but not enough to actually pay to upgrade from Vista.

No it's not.

It's already been RTM'ed. People know its better because they either used the release candidate or work for a company that received the RTM version. Either way there weren't any major noticeable changes from RC to RTM. I'm running it on 2 machines and it's far better than 32 and 64 bit XP and Vista.

Also people should probably realize that they are discussing 64 bit XP, not 32 bit.
 
Vista and XP crash on me all the time for nothing, but Mac has no computer games, so... yeah.

7 isn't far better than Vista, it's a solid upgrade, like the upgrade from Windows 2000 to Windows XP.

Also, 64bit XP is brutal, even worse than 32bit XP.

You're doing something wrong. XP, Vista and 7 all run fine for me a month at a time without any crashes, I only reboot for patch Tuesday.
