I have to go on record as saying the following:
While I don't think that azale's and Luckymoose's actions in forming a new channel were appropriate, and were in many ways deeply immature, I can't deny any longer that there's often something wrong with the tone of #nes. I don't know if it has gotten worse recently, but it seems like flaming and personal attacks are at an all-time high. I probably bear my share of the blame in contributing to this along with many others.
It's possibly a failing that #neverending shares too, but I haven't spent any time in that channel so I have no way of knowing.
People are often too callous when it isn't deserved, and we haven't made enough of an effort to rein in certain things like profanity directed at other members who are in the chatroom, and attacking someone to their face rather than their ideas or positions. It has fostered a culture that hasn't made #nes an open and inviting place for everyone. I think that #nes can still support NESes that are seen as "better" without tearing down individuals. I'm not saying this to try and take sides, because I still think #neverending is a bad idea. But there's no longer any doubt in my mind that #nes needs to put some new user behavior guidelines in place if we want to remain a positive place for the whole forum community, and not just part of it.
In order to walk this situation back, and perhaps take the first steps towards resolving this silly and unnecessary IRC rift, I think the operators of #nes need to talk about putting in place some basic guidelines for personal behavior. I'm not saying we should ban swearing and adopt CFC forum rules, but things are going to have to change if #nes is going to remain the IRC community for the entire forum, and not just a privileged hangout for certain people.
If we can't take those kinds of basic steps I'm not sure I'm willing to continue supporting the channel in its current state. But I honestly believe that won't be necessary, as we're all reasonable people and we are still a community. The division of the two rooms isn't necessarily as poisonous as the personal attacks that have come with it, and the potential blowback on the NESes that we truly care about. Things like kraznaya quitting N3S should never have happened, and deeply troubled me when they did. We just can't afford to reduce a small community like ours any further with such factionalism.
