While We Wait: Writer's Block & Other Lame Excuses

Well, an accurate descriptor is 'Nation-Building Role-Playing-Games', but that abbreviates to something that I'd pronounce as 'Nubberpuggs', which isn't the greatest. Also, that name excludes other projects by the NES community, like GodNESes, or NESLifes. Maybe 'Collaborative World Building' is the best way to describe NESing.

But I really like nebberpugs.

Me too! We should just forget the origin of the word and run with it, then. IOTs and NESes are collectively called Nebberpugs from now on.

That's also a fair point, but the problem is not NESes like N3S that have already been established. I'm talking about new NESes that may not be frequently updated that might be created after the merger, which could easily be pushed down by active NESes & IOTs.

OK, but EQ made an excellent post that shows that the success of a NES is related more to how invested the mod is into the NES than anyone else. Most NESes don't make it past 5 or so updates, so the implication that we'd somehow have a crisis on our hands regarding semi-active NESes receiving less than their fair share of note does not seem very critical to me. Surely, a NES would have a dozen other reasons for failing before that.

In the IOT subforum, they actively plan successors to the IOT they are currently running. Sometimes several.

EDIT: Anywho. I fully support a merger. New players are new players, and some of us are pretty experienced old players. I feel there are lots of interesting ideas that can be shared, and that mingling will do us both good.

I support CWB or "Seewub"

That's usually the reason they die so fast or on arrival. The GM has had a better idea in an advanced stage.

I check both forums regularly and am on the lookout for a good IOT, but have joined one or two in the past couple of months. To me, that is telling as to their current quality (which, btw, has drastically declined).

I think, in general, a merger would do more harm than good, if only because people are so obstinate. In my honest opinion, the only reason a merger would be bad is because so many people think it would be, and would leave or take a break because of it.

In any case, as to those worrying about the front page, there are 6 IOTs run any time, maximum. While that number may increase with a merger, I don't see more active games as a problem. It is a superficial concern, at best.

Finally, the name. I say it should be NES/IOT, or maybe Role-Playing Games or something of the sort.

P.S.

The 'politicking,' as you call it (not 100% sure what that means), in IOT is severely inderestimated. The subforum being so small, people use others' personalities ruthlessly in a sort of Batman Gambit.

Iunno, just some ramblings.

I totally buy that IOTers are not evil people. But what is an actual pro for moving forward with this? The best I've heard so far is "they're essentially the same forum", which is unconvincing, and apparently isn't spurring the merger of the OTs. Both communities seem happy. Why fix what isn't broken?

"They're essentially the same forum" is very convincing, as it's why there isn't 20 different forums for every category of Thing. But more importantly, from a community health standpoint, I think the community has a lot to gain from a shot in the arm consisting of new, vibrant, active players. We have a lot to learn from IOT and vice versa.

IOTers are current discussing their future, not that many veteran players are leaving, and realized they've had almost no new players. They have panicked, and want a merger.

Y'know, you should stop comparing the OT split with this because there is a majority of OTers who want them reunited. At least the ones who spoke in the survey overwhelmingly supported a remerge. I mean, half did, but most of the rest didn't talk about the question because it was not a direct question.

The problem is they can't keep players so they want to leech on ours? Boo! Parasites go home!

Hyperbole is just that -- hyperbole. We're not talking about twenty forums, we're talking about two, which are exactly as different in form, function, and spirit as the two OT forums.

As an admitted lurker of IOT (not IOT chat mind you, just the IOT forum, as admittedly I was once an IOTer), the longer this goes on the more this entire affair seems like a (possibly unconscious) political maneuver. There's great concern that IOT is stagnated and/or declining, and the self-appointed leaders of their community are supporting this, from what I can tell, out of a desire for self-preservation.

Survival of the fittest.

Not so. The difference between the OTs is mandated - the spirit of the discussion in each of the OTs is required by guidelines.

In both NES and IOT, forum games primarily to do with geography, history, military strategy, economics, and the general body geopolitic are the order of the day and are different solely in terms of the player base. As I have pained to show before, IOTs can be thought of as just another kind of NES, and nevertheless there is good reason to believe that a merger would enrich the general player-base and make us all wealthier for it.

How exactly would it make my personal enjoyment of this hobby better? All I'm hearing here is a whole lot of "CHANGE YOU CAN BELIEVE IN" which, while good for politicians, is almost wholly lacking in substance. Why would we be wealthier for the incorporation of IOTers?

Moreover, why is "they're similar!" reason enough to erase the existing differences, which, as documented by many people, are pretty substantial? Should we start erasing the difference between cake and cupcakes next?
