Windows 8

Do yourself a favor and get Windows 7, just look at some of the horror stories about how people have had a hard time even doing the most basic things with Windows 8, like running the shutdown process.

Remember all the horror stories about XP when it was released?

The only reason Windows 7 didn't have many horror stories was because it was largely identical to Vista which had already been out for three years.

I'm at a dilemma right now: My school has signed in some kind of partnership with Microsoft or something like that, and apparently I get to have free Windows. I currently have Vista and I never really bothered to upgrade it, but now that I have the opportunity I'm wondering whether I should choose Windows 7 or 8. Feel free to prove me wrong but to me Metro just doesn't seem to add anything to a desktop computer. My question is, how usable is Windows 8 if I just ignore Metro? Also, are performance gains and other technical improvements in W8 significant compared to W7?

As with any upgrade or change, it will take a while to get used to. It's definitely worth it - especially in the long run.

Well plus 7 was basically a glorified service pack without many kernal changes so the driver issue didn't happen as badly and the manufacturers made proper computers for it.

Edit: Well I just repeated what Zelig said really.

It's not entirely about aesthetics, not for me, anyway... I mostly liked Vista, except the actual OS was terrible. So many absurd crashes and random problems, etc., none of which happened after upgrading to W7. I suppose the different hardware is an extraneous factor in that, but I don't think it should have had much to do with anything. I still have the Vista PC, but I freaking hate using it... everything about it is off-putting after using 7.

There's no good reason to not get 8, other then false scaremongering.

A relatively small minority of crashes in Vista were due to anything that MS put into the OS.

Sure, Win7 is better than Vista, but every MS OS has been better than its predecessor. Vista was more of an improvement over XP than the jump between any other MS operating systems save perhaps 3.1 to 95.

18% of crashes isn't all that small of a minority though. It's almost of fifth of all of them

I bought a Windows 8 upgrade recently, and my hard-drive unfortunately died less than two months later.

As I can't find recovery disks for the original operating system (Vista), does Microsoft offer any sort of deal for people looking to buy the Windows 8 full version who just pissed away money on a now worthless Windows 8 upgrade that I can't use anymore? Like a partial credit towards buying the full version?

You shouldn't need the disks for Vista, just the licence key. You can probably download Vista on a friend's computer and install from CD/USB. Just google for the recovery disk or the full image. Even better if a friend has original Vista CDs that are of the same version that you have a licence for (Home vs Premium etc). Then you can upgrade using your Win 8 licence key.

This post leaves me wondering why you mostly liked Vista... it sounds rather negative. It's basically the reasons that made me mostly dislike Vista.

I was talking aesthetically, really.

Ah. Yeah, Vista isn't bad aesthetically. I guess that's a pretty minor factor for me, as long as it isn't super-ugly like the Motif look on Unix. I was the person who had my Windows 7 in Classic Mode at work for months at a time, so I'm kind of old-fashioned in that regard (though I do usually stick with Luna on XP).

The Motif look is great in its own way. Strong visual cues, useful colour contrast while causing absolutely no eyestrain, very consistent across different UI elements. Functional rather than pretty, by design.

I remember there was a bug with the Vista upgrade disc that let you do a clean install without even having an old license. Actually, I did have an old license (the computer had come with Vista Basic and the sticker's still on the machine), but it was actually easier to reinstall Home Premium with the clean-install method.

I have some experience of using Windows 8 on my PC, it really does have some awesome features and improvement in lots of ares, but was not feeling that much compatible as i was using the Xp. But now I am switch to Windows 7 which much better than both and really reliable, compatible and improved in features.
