Yes, it's that time of year to apply for college and sixth form in England, and so the conundrum of that "Ethnic background" section ensues...
However, the section of my school's admission forms is weird- as you may know, my father is Italian, making me half Italian. Therefore, this would be a good option to tick if it was on the sheet- but it is not.
This is one of the bad things of these sorts of questions in British application forms, the only recognised white ethnicities are British and Irish.
My school, however, has provided a little more choice, still no Italian. English (yes, I am, but the whole point of this section is to display your ethnic background, which I consider to be a mix of Italian and English, only one box can be ticked), Scottish (nay), Welsh (nay), "Other White British" (not really sure what this means), Irish (nay), "Traveller of Irish Heritage" (gippo, most certainly not), "White Eastern European" (Polish, Kosovans, I suppose; do I include Italy in this?), "White Western European" (Is Italy in Western Europe?), Gypsy/Roma (no) and "Any other White Background" (if Italy is not in Western Europe, I suppose I would put this).
So this brings me to my question. I have asked this question to people, and their answers have ranged from, "Shut up, you're English", to "Italy is in Southern Europe" (not an option
). Neither helps me.
So, the question is: "Would you consider Italy to be in Western Europe?"
If the majority says "yes", I shall put myself as a "White Western European", if the majority of the poll is "no", I shall be a person of "Any other White background".
The obvious answer to the question would be that Italy is in Southern Europe, and Central Europe, but neither is applicable...
"Western Europe":
Note the interesting inclusion of Greece. Of course, does "Western Europe" refer to cultural Western Europe, or geographical Western Europe?
Answer!
