You are king of a small sized island, what weapon systems do you use to defend it?

I'd have an island population that was so poor, so ragged, so nasty and so well armed that any invading army would seriously have to think twice before doing anything let alone invading. I shall call it the Somalian Defense.

I'm with scherbchen and Dachs on this one. Although I'd make sure to have a cow-catapult for good measure, in case the enemy uses the trojan rabbit.

I'd place many nuclear bombs(or hydrogen bombs, just something that is awesome) under water and put a network of wires in the terrain surrounding my grand mansion. Once you stumble on a wire, a bell connected to the wire network rings, after hearing that I press a big red button, and it's Tsunami Time!

Put machine guns along the coast to kill anybody who tries to make a landing, use sea mines to protect against enemy ships, surface to air missiles and the 30 planes that I'm allowed would be used to protect against enemy aircraft. I would also have deep underground tunnels to protect things from enemy bombers. Maybe I would have some fast, stealthy ships designed to slip through an enemy blockade so that I could get stuff from outside the island if necessary.

My greatest concern would be enemy air power and my second greatest concern is that a small island is probably not self sufficient.

But why does it need to be defended? Is it being attacked? If not, I'd say become pacifists and put the money into something else.

What, no pirate haven? Amateur.

For a man with the title of KomissariatofKommonSense you've managed to miss the implied pirate base, the elephant in the Somalian Strategy :p

ASROC + SH-60F pwn j00.

Not really, no. Anti submarine warfare is good, but against modern subs, like the relatively inexpensive German export subs, the advantage rests with the subs unless the attacking navy is extremely good. And that really means that there's only a handful of navies that can attack a place that is defended by several good subs without taking devastating losses.

IMO if you make the costs of attacking far greater than the benefits, you are defended, even against superpowers.

If you live on a small enough island, you can't defend from a superpower. But no land force can survive on airborne logistics.

AK-47s and guerrilla warfare for anyone who does get onto the island.

Well if I have the island's command and control centers plus their resupply bases I can bring additional reinforcements by sea. I doubt the submarines would be able to organize and coordinate their attacks then.

Submarines generally don't coordinate in that manner. A simple fact of it being impossible to contact one while it's underwater (the US navy can, and does, but it's slow and an expensive system, and useful more on a global than a local scale.) On the local area, each operating independently will do a hell of a lot of harm. transports are easy to sink. And they are big, so each sunk is a sizable part of the attacker's resources. And other than the few world powers left, getting just a couple of warships is all that they can afford to lose.
